This holiday season, you may be stocking up on canned drinks for parties and guests. Well, you'll want to clean off those cans before handing them out!Investigator reporter Jace Larson tested soda cans for bacteria, and what he found was pretty gross. The cans tested came from a variety of places, including grocery stores, convenience stores, vending machines and cans stored in a home. All but one of the cans tested had mold on it.The highest mold count was 600 colonies of mold. That can came from a grocery store. This type of exposure could make people with compromised immune systems or lung disease sick.To put that number of colonies into perspective-- a flooded home could have 2,000-plus colonies of mold, while a condemned home could have roughly levels around 36,000.However, microbiologist Helene Ver Eecke, with the Metropolitan State University of Denver, says the 600 colonies of mold isn’t really a cause for concern.“Regular microbial load that we are constantly dosing ourselves with everything that we touch with everything we breathe,” Ver Eecke says. “It's just part of being human.”One soda can did test for bacteria levels that would be slightly concerning. The can—purchased from a convenience store--had the highest levels, with 3,700 bacteria colonies on it.But compared to dry cereal mixes, which can have up to 100,000 bacteria colonies and deemed safe to consume by FDA standards, the colonies found on that can were significantly less."There was one sample that came from a convenience store that had a higher bacterial count than samples, which makes sense because they were probably stocked probably appropriate for people to wear gloves when stocking," explains Ver Eecke. If you’re worried about the amount of bacteria, Ver Eecke recommends seeking other options."There may be other options for you a bottle or other things to try to help keep you safe." 1901

This year has brought a lot of changes for everyone and there could be a chance that those changes could translate to savings on your insurance policies.Bankrate is encouraging people with home and car insurance to take a fresh look at their policies.“You could save anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, but it is going to depend on location, it is going to depend on your lifestyle, and how it has changed vs the past. So, it is worth comparing and really kicking the tires on various insurance policies from different companies,” said Stephen Kates, Insurance Analyst at Bankrate. There are several lifestyle changes that could have happened this year. Many people took on home improvement projects during this pandemic. Some of those may have included adding safety features to our home, which can help save money on home insurance.A lot of Americans are also driving a lot less now, which can help with car insurance.“If you're working from home, like a lot of us, you're probably driving significantly less than you used to and that's something you can bring up to your insurance carrier because that can significantly reduce the amount you pay for your premium,” said Kates.Insurance policies haven't necessarily changed, but the way insurance companies look at lifestyle changes may have changed, so it's worth checking in on your policies. Experts at Bankrate suggest doing so at least once a year. 1429

Through the heart of Little Rock runs Interstate 630. Built decades ago, it’s a main thoroughfare that connects the eastern and western parts of the Arkansas city.It also separates the northern parts of the city from the southern.“It’s a very self-consciously created segregated city,” said Dr. John Kirk, distinguished professor of history at the University of Arkansas Little Rock. "The white population is mainly concentrated to the north and the west, and the black population is very much concentrated to the east and the south.”Even though Jim Crow segregation ended in the 1960s, Little Rock still finds itself battling separation. The demographics are nearly equal parts black and white, yet the disparity can be seen in the affluent northern neighborhoods and dilapidated southern ones.“In some ways Little Rock is not just a southern story and a local story, but a national story, too, about how racial discrimination and racial disparities function,” said Kirk. But for all the unspoken division, there is a unifying vision manifesting itself under the city’s 7th Street corridor only a few blocks away from I-630. On any given day, you might be able to find 5-10 artists painting murals of prominent Black historical figures on the drab walls that line the frequently traveled road.“[We’re] trying to brighten up the city, man,” said Jermaine Gibson, one of the many artists. “It’s been all love and positivity. People honking. They love the idea of putting color in the city.”Jermaine was putting the finishing touches on a painting that says, “Make Art Not War.” It’s one of more than 30 paintings that have gone up on the walls since George Floy’s death in Minneapolis on May 25.“We decided to create something that we knew how to do,” said Jose Hernandez, who first came up with the idea. "Use our tools, our resources to show our feelings and manifest them in that way.”Some artists sip craft beer, others smoke cigarettes held between stained fingers, but there is a feeling of acceptance on the 200-yard stretch of 7th Street as rap music and laughs fill the air.“It’s been nothing but love and support,” said Lisa Bunch who is painting a 15-foot high mural of John W. Walker, a prominent Little Rock civil rights attorney. “This is our way of protesting for the change that we want to see.”A common sight, outside of the myriad colors that plaster the walls, are passersby who stop to snap a photo, or slow down their car to get a better look. The artists say it is exactly what they are aiming for – a conversation starter that conveys a message of inclusion to a city that still feels divided."It opened up a space where you can come out here and reflect on those ideas and meet other people and talk about it,” Hernandez said. 2755

Three people have been killed in southern France after a gunman stole a car and took hostages in a town's supermarket, in what authorities are treating as a terror attack.Police shot dead the gunman, French media reported, after a four-hour standoff Friday at the Super U supermarket in the town of Trebes.Interior Minister Gerard Collomb identified the gunman as 26-year-old Redouane Lakdim. He was known to authorities for minor crimes, including drug offenses, Collomb said. The gunman had opened fire and killed two people there, he told reporters. One other was killed earlier in the carjacking in the city of Carcassonne."People were absolutely calm before and never though that there could be an attack in a town like this," Collomb told reporters, adding that the risk of terrorism in France was still "very high."A local prosecutor said the attack appeared to be "ISIS-inspired," CNN affiliate BFM TV reported. 926

These days, you can sit on your couch and get a pretty accurate answer to the age-old question: “What’s my trade-in worth?”As online used car retailers streamline the buying process, they’re creating more convenient ways to handle car-buying’s Achilles’ heel, the trade-in. And, with the current used car shortage caused by the pandemic, you might get a surprisingly high price selling your car to them rather than trading it in.You don’t have to sell, of course; you’re just finding out what your trade-in is worth in the most accurate way possible — the price someone will actually pay. Here’s what the process looks like, and how you can use the results.Places to get a quote onlineAlthough there may be other places in your area to trade in or sell your car, there are currently three companies dominating online used car sales: Carvana, Shift and Vroom. These companies allow you to self-appraise your car and get a quote to either sell your car or trade it in for one of theirs. The transaction and paperwork are touchless. Not all these companies are nationwide, and your vehicle will be inspected by a company representative — and the offer possibly adjusted — before you get your money.Another way to sell or trade your car is through CarMax, a used car superstore with outlets in 40 states and an in-person appraisal process that takes about 45 minutes. It may be easier to look up your car’s value on Edmunds.com, where you can get a CarMax quote without even having to go to one of its car lots.A real-world comparison testBefore starting the appraisal process, I checked pricing guide Kelley Blue Book, known as KBB, to get an idea of my cars’ trade-in values at a dealer, then collected online offers from CarMax, Carvana, Vroom and Shift. On these sites, you can fill in information manually or supply your car’s license plate number or 17-digit vehicle identification number to fetch precise year, make, model and trim. They’ll ask you about options on the car, color, if the car has been smoked in, and any warning lights or body damage. You’ll typically get an offer in minutes. Here are the results for my 2014 Volkswagen SportWagen TDI with 41,000 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,213.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,067.I ran the same numbers for my son’s 2016 Mazda3 Sport with 72,732 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,085.Lowest purchase offer (Vroom): ,750.Best purchase offer (Shift): ,100.And a friend let me run his 2019 Honda Civic Si with 4,200 miles:KBB trade-in estimate: ,225.Lowest purchase offer (CarMax): ,700.Best purchase offer (Carvana): ,077.As you can see, pricing is highly variable. The more sources you contact, the better.Do you really get that much? These companies promise a no-haggle, fair price for your trade-in. But does the price change when the company’s representative shows up and goes over your car with a fine-toothed comb?Sometimes, sellers omit important aspects of their car’s condition such as frame damage from an accident or rust, says Toby Russell, co-CEO of Shift. In these cases, after a physical inspection, the price is reduced. However, there are times when a customer gets more for a car because market conditions have changed. If a customer is transparent when describing a vehicle’s condition, “we don’t anticipate having to make adjustments to our offers,” says Carvana spokesperson Amy O’Hara. “But we are prepared should the situation arise.”Online comments on sites such as Reddit support these statements. Most consumers found the trade-in or sales process at these companies to be fast, transparent and convenient.Don’t forget the sales taxWith these figures in hand, you are in a position of strength when you visit an actual dealer. In most states, if you trade in your car, you pay sales tax only on the difference between the cost of the new car and your old one. If your new car is ,000 and you are getting ,000 for your trade-in, you pay sales tax on the difference: ,000. In a state with a 10% sales tax, you saved ,000 by trading in.That should be a consideration if a dealer’s offer doesn’t quite measure up to the offers you get online or through CarMax.Let the dealer make you its best offer. Tell the used car manager, the internet sales office or the salesperson that you’ve already appraised your car on pricing guides and gotten quotes from online retailers. You don’t need to share the offers you have — just ask for their best price.Factor in the sales tax before you reject anything, but with backup offers it’s easy to walk away, sell the car independently and return with cash to strike a better deal.More From NerdWalletWill You Get a Refund If COVID-19 Closes Your Campus?College Going Online?
