SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is on the FBI’s list as one of the top 13 highest sex trafficking areas in the United States - with between three and eight thousand victims a year in San Diego. Most victims find if they make it out the other side - they have few options for picking up the pieces of their lives. As 10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt found, there is one local university giving them light at the end of the tunnel.Kimberly introduces us to a woman who is starting a new chapter in her life and her family’s legacy.Ebony Jones’ story begins with abuse and bondage but emerges into hope and wholeness. She will soon enter the only university program of its kind in the Country at Point Loma Nazarene University. The Beauty For Ashes Scholarship Fund gives former victims of sex trafficking a free college education. In the description of the fund, the university writes: "When we talk to survivors - we keep hearing the same message: 'Survivors dream of a college education!'We asked ourselves, 'What if we could offer scholarships?' What if we could stand with survivors and support their journey, from victim to survivor, to thriver.?This launched the Beauty for Ashes Scholarship Fund, founded with the belief that an education at a Christian university is a critical long-term investment in the empowerment of survivors of human trafficking." 1391
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego businesses are still waiting for any information on the resumption of indoor services, such as indoor dining, and the long wait has some frustrated and at a breaking point.“The first five years were hard, but I never thought it would be a pandemic that brought me to my knees,” said Yuda Phia, who has owned Time Out Sports Tavern in downtown San Diego for 10 years.Piha and wife Sarah got married days before the pandemic forced the shutdown, and the restaurant's first closure.Sarah Phia explained the extra measures they've taken to meet or exceed the guidelines laid out the first time they reopened, including Plexiglas dividers and staff retraining.Sarah, a graphic designer, made the signage throughout the establishment that enforced mask wearing and social distancing.Setting up tables on the sidewalk isn't really an option for Time Out, which is located downtown on Broadway near 7th Avenue along a busy two-way street that gets constant bus and truck traffic and has narrow room for patrons.County officials have said they expect new state-directed timelines in the coming days for reopening businesses, but Supervisor Jim Desmond said Tuesday that he doesn't know what they will be.Desmond has advocated for the safe reopening of businesses, but he said the county’s hands are tied as control lies in the governor's hands. The decision is also entirely independent from the state’s watch list, which San Diego County was removed from on Tuesday. The orders were issued concurrently, but not together, so there is no automatic trigger point when businesses would reopen.Desmond wishes the state would reauthorize local control so that the county could make some reopening decisions independently going forward. 1758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom's office on Monday, asking that comedy clubs in San Diego be allowed to reopen safely. The letter requests that performances be allowed to reopen in outdoor settings, with shows lasting no longer than an hour."We're not talking about concerts here where thousands of people are sitting next to each other," Cate said. "These are performances that are done while folks and individuals are having dinner in a restaurant setting, properly distanced, why should they be treated any differently?"Earlier this month, some comedy clubs, like The Comedy Palace in Kearney Mesa, moved their comedy shows outdoors, only to find out they were in violation of public health orders and made to stop.George Salek, co-owner of The Comedy Place, said they have a lot of outdoor space, and people were able to observe social distancing."Eighty people is what we're trying to put in 5,000 square feet," he said. "It's really safe."Cate said San Diego's entertainment industry is an important part of the economy."I think anyone who can fit the confines of what we want to have done," Cate said. "If you're all able to comply with all, you should be allowed to reopen absolutely." 1259
