If you get a letter in the mail from the IRS, you might want to open it.In an attempt to track down some Americans who did not receive an economic impact check earlier this year, the IRS said on Thursday it is sending 9 million letters to Americans who do not file a traditional tax return. The letter will encourage recipients of the letter to visit the IRS.gov before an Oct. 15 deadline to register for a stimulus check. For most Americans, the checks are worth ,200.“The IRS continues to work hard to reach people eligible for these payments,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These mailings are the latest step by the IRS to reach as many people as possible for these important payments. We are releasing this state-by-state information so that state and local leaders and organizations can better understand the size of this population in their communities and assist them in claiming these important payments. Time is running out to claim a payment before the deadline.”But the IRS says just because you receive a letter does not automatically make you eligible. To be eligible, the IRS requires that an individual is a US citizen or resident alien, have a work-eligible Social Security Number and can’t be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.Americans who earn less than ,200 a year, or married couples earning less than ,400 a year, are not required to submit a federal tax return. These Americans, if they did not apply for a stimulus check, would have been excluded from receiving a check unless they earn another form of government income, such as Social Security. Those who believe they are eligible for a check don’t have to wait for the letter. A tool is available on the IRS’ webpage by clicking here.As a reminder, here is who is eligible for a stimulus check:,400 – Couples earning less than 0,000 a year (couples earning 0,000 - 8,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Individuals earning less than ,000 a year (individuals earning ,000 - ,000 will receive a prorated check).,200 – Heads of households earning less than 2,500 (heads of households earning 2,500 - 6,000 will receive a prorated check).0 - Each dependent child age 16 or under as of Dec. 31, 2019 (for qualifying individuals and couples). 2291

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to donate money this year, plenty of causes need your attention. In a year like 2020, choosing where to direct your dollars is like picking your favorite child. Should your money go toward nonprofits providing basic needs, organizations fighting for social justice or a campaign to help local small businesses stay afloat? If you prefer donating your time, how do you give back when volunteer events are limited by the pandemic? Here’s a guide to prioritizing your donations, taking advantage of special tax deductions for 2020 giving and using your holiday spending to make a difference.Tax benefits of giving during the pandemicThis year, in addition to helping those in need, you may be eligible to receive added tax benefits for your donations. As part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, taxpayers who take the standard deduction are allowed an additional deduction of up to 0 for charitable donations made in cash. Previously, charitable contributions could only be deducted if taxpayers itemized.Taxpayers who itemize can deduct up to 100% of their adjusted gross income for cash donations (up from 60%) made in 2020.These incentives don’t apply to all contributions — only those made to qualifying public organizations, which the IRS defines as “those that are religious, charitable, educational, scientific or literary in purpose.” Contributions to donor-advised funds, nonoperating private foundations and support organizations don’t qualify for the deduction. The IRS website has a tool to look up tax-exempt organizations.Use your values to inform your givingChoosing which cause to support is deeply personal. If you haven’t already, make a list of your values and what you’re grateful for. This list is the basis for your giving plan that can help you determine which causes to prioritize and which ones you can say no to, says Jeannie Sager, director of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University.Sager says you can also use a giving plan to frame your actions outside of hitting the “donate” button.“What kind of volunteerism are you doing? What messages are you sending as you retweet or share things on social media? How does that tie into your philanthropy and your values?” she suggests asking yourself.Early in the pandemic, you may have committed small acts of generosity such as buying gift cards to support your local coffee shop or paying your hairstylist when the salon was shut down.Keep the community spirit going, says Eileen Heisman, president and CEO of National Philanthropic Trust, a public charity that manages donor-advised funds and is based in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. “I’m a big fan of small grassroots charities,” she says. “A lot of everyday neighborhood arts organizations, small ones, are disappearing.”Research by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute during the early months of the pandemic showed that organizations dedicated to basic needs and health fared better than those focused on religion, and especially better than those serving all other purposes, such as education, the arts and the environment.Resources such as Charity Navigator and GuideStar help you research a charity’s financial health, tax-exempt status and practices. Your local community foundation website can also give you an idea of nonprofits to support.“We encourage people to give deeply to a few causes rather than spreading money out to many causes,” says Grace Chiang Nicolette, vice president of programming and external relations at the Center for Effective Philanthropy in Cambridge, Massachusetts.Unrestricted gifts are typically the most useful to charities, Nicolette says, referring to donations that don’t come with requirements on how the money can be used.Give back while shoppingThis holiday season, 65% of Americans say the pandemic will have an impact on the way they plan to give gifts. At least, 3 in 10 Americans (30%) say they’ll send money or gift cards, and 28% say they’ll ship gifts to loved ones they typically give gifts to in person, according to NerdWallet’s 2020 Holiday Shopping Report.Around 1 in 8 Americans plan to spend more on charitable donations, and almost 1 in 5 plan on spending less on donations in 2020 than they did in 2019, the report says.If you cannot set aside money for donations, use your online holiday purchases to give back. Many online retailers make it easy to donate as you’re checking out or buying gift cards, such as through the Paypal Giving Fund or Amazon Smile program.Heisman suggests using apps that round up your purchases and donate the difference to charity. Boomerang Giving, ChangeUp For Charity and GiveTide are some examples. You can also donate your unused airline miles or credit card rewards to charity, but be aware of the downsides. The charity may not always receive the full amount of your donation and you cannot apply this contribution toward the CARES Act tax deduction. This column was provided to The Associated Press by the personal finance website NerdWallet.More From NerdWalletHow to Maximize Your Online Donation to CharityTax Deductible Donations: Rules for Giving to Charity, How to Get a Deduction & 3 Tips to SaveSmart Money Podcast: The Holiday Shopping EpisodeAmrita Jayakumar is a writer at NerdWallet. If you're planning on receiving or sending mail on Wednesday, you may have to wait an extra day as mail service will be suspended due to Wednesday being declared a national holiday for President George H.W. Bush's state funeral.According to USPS, all post offices will close on Wednesday, and regular mail service will be suspended. USPS says package delivery will also be limited on Wednesday. Wednesday's suspension of mail service is part of a federal government closure ordered by President Donald Trump. Trump issued an executive order on Saturday to close the federal government "as a mark of respect for George Herbert Walker Bush, the forty-first President of the United States."Many other government offices will be closed on Wednesday, including the Social Security Administration. Also, the major domestic stock markets will not open on Wednesday.  892

Hurricane Lane may have passed by the island chain over the weekend, but Hawaii is still feeling the storm's aftereffects as residents recover from days of heavy rain and remain on the lookout for even more showers.Lane dropped 52.02 inches of rain on Hawaii from August 22-26, the second highest rainfall total from a tropical cyclone in the US since 1950, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service (NWS).That's behind only the 60.58 inches dumped on Nederland, Texas by Hurricane Harvey last year.Hawaii's Big Island -- the easternmost island in the chain -- was hammered hardest by rain. Some residents there had to be evacuated, with water rescues occurring in Hilo and Keaau, the NWS said. A number of roads were closed by flooding and landslides. 782

If you're waiting on a furniture delivery, you're not alone. Some customers are reporting delays of four months or more assuming you can find the item you want in stock.Like everything else, the coronavirus pandemic has complicated distribution for the furniture business, and no one is immune to the problem of supply, demand and disruption."This has been a fundamental shock to the system,” says Michael Miller, chief operating officer at Convey, a technology company that helps retailers do better deliveries.“Our network has over 5 billion shipping events so we track every single data point from when a package leaves a fulfillment center, goes on a truck, goes to all of the different handoffs, and then reaches your door,” Miller added.Convey supports big, small and specialty retailers. Miller says the disruption in online business is complicated. And while things are getting better amid attempts to rebound and adjust to a new normal, there's a lot that can't be fixed overnight.“People are getting creative but the common denominator is they need more drivers, they need more trucks, they need more warehouses to keep up with this demand,” Miller said.Modloft, a Miami-based company that sells elite, contemporary and modern furniture, has 60% of its items on backorder, which company chief marketing officer Sean O’Brien said is “historic.”The “factory could have a delay, the transit company could have a delay bringing it into port, the port could have a delay, the warehouse could have a delay, there’s all sorts of places along the line where things can get backed up and we have to be good about communicating to the customer what’s happening and when,” O’Brien said.Modloft saw a good April and a historic summer for sales, breaking company records But, like all other businesses who are trying to get customers their goods as fast as possible, stock is a problem.“Customers are frustrated they can’t get a particular sofa or color they want for 90 days and this is happening at all brands,” O’Brien said. Customers “may have been to four other stores and come to us as the fifth and still frustrated with the same experience.”A-list celebrities are Modloft customers, like professional athletes and Grammy-nominated recording artists, but no matter your name, your wait time will be the same.“If you see something you like, grab it,” Miller said. “There are definitely supply shortages out there. I would pounce, not wait if you see something available. Secondly, pay close attention to what the retailer is telling you about the estimated delivery date. This is very, very important.”Convey says customers should sign up for alerts, make sure an estimated delivery date is clearly displayed before you buy, and be patient. Especially through the holiday shopping season. 2799
