BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan Wednesday held phone talks with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Faye Locke and Trade Representative Ron Kirk to discuss expansion of China-U.S trade cooperation.Wang and Locke, who is also co-chair of the China-U.S Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT), agreed to enhance the exchange of opinions between two countries and expansion of bilateral cooperation, to ensure the upcoming 21st JCCT would be able to make positive achievements, and contribute to promoting sound and stable development of the China-U.S relationship.The JCCT was established in 1983 as a platform for the two countries to promote trade relations and address issues of mutual concern. The 20th JCCT was held in east China's Hangzhou City on Oct. 28-29, 2009.
BEIJING, Sep. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday called upon Chinese industrial firms to improve the quality of their products as part of the efforts to transform China's economic growth pattern.Chinese enterprises should boost the quality of industrial products by upgrading their technologies and establishing a quality-based credit system of enterprises, said Zhang at a forum held in Beijing which focused on how to improve the quality and reputation of Chinese industrial products.He also called for accelerating the establishment of industrial standardization system, actively taking part in drafting and revising of related international standards and establishing a reward and punishment system that favors firms that manufacture high-quality products.Zhang also urged China's domestic firms to step up efforts to nurture indigenous brands to make "made in China" a byword for high-quality products.
BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's safety record has improved in the first nine months of 2010 with fewer accidents and deaths compared with one year ago, Luo Lin, director of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS), said Wednesday.From January to September this year, China reported 16,091 fewer accidents, or a decline of 5.8 percent over the previous year, while deaths caused by accidents were down by 5,869 in the same period, Luo said during a a national video conference regarding the country's work safety record.While Luo did not provide the actual figures of accidents or deaths caused during this period, he said: "Though we have made new progress in work safety, the total number of accidents is still too high and the accidents with heavy casualties and caused by illegal production activities were rising dramatically."According to SAWS, China's work safety death ratio per 100 million yuan (14.9 million U.S. dollars) of gross domestic product (GDP) was down 18.6 percent year on year to 0.21 during the January-September period. In other words, every 10 billion yuan of China's GDP will cause 21 deaths in the process of production.In addition, the death ratio per million tonne of coal output dropped 13.3 percent to 0.78 in the same period.According to the last figures released by SAWS in July, workplace accidents had killed 33,876 people in the first half of this year.
BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday called on Papua New Guinea to facilitate Chinese investment in the island country in southwest Pacific Ocean."We hope Papua New Guinea will provide conveniences to Chinese business investment in your country and seek common growth," Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang told the visiting Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare.Li highlighted Papua New Guinea's role as China's important trade partner and investment destination among Pacific island countries.Bilateral trade totaled about 860 million U.S. dollars in 2008, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (R) meets with Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Michael Somare in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 14, 2010.Somare said his country would like to improve the investment environment, promote mutually beneficial cooperation with China and make positive efforts to advance bilateral cooperation and enhance friendship.Somare is leading a delegation to Beijing after his stop in China's port city Tianjin, where he met with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the New Champions 2010, also known as the Summer Davos.This was the second meeting between Li and Somare as Li visited Port Moresby, capital and the largest city of Papua New Guinea, last November.In their meeting in Diaoyutai Guesthouse in western Beijing later Tuesday, Li stressed the good momentum of bilateral relations in recent years, saying the two countries maintained frequent high-level exchanges and sought pragmatic cooperation in a wide range of fields.China and Papua New Guinea shared many political stances, complemented each other economically and enjoyed a huge potential for enhanced relationship, Li said.Looking to the future, Li said China would like to increase exchange of visits, expand trade and investment, explore cooperation in agriculture, forestry, fishery, energy, resources, transportation, culture, education with the island country.Li reaffirmed China's commitment to seeking stronger coordination and cooperation with Papua New Guinea on international and regional issues.Somare will conclude his China visit on Wednesday.
