A 27-year-old man has confessed to killing US scientist Suzanne Eaton on the Greek island of Crete, a police spokesperson told CNN Monday. The local man had been detained by police for questioning, after the 59-year-old molecular biologist went missing July 2 while attending a conference.More details are expected to be announced Tuesday, Crete police said.Eaton was attending a conference at the Orthodox Academy when she disappeared, apparently during a run.Last Monday, her body was discovered by two locals deep inside a cave, according to Crete's Chief of Police Konstantinos Lagoudakis. She was found around 60 meters (nearly 200 feet) inside the cave, beneath an air shaft that had been covered by a large wooden pallet. The underground caverns had been turned into a bunker by Nazi soldiers during the Second World War.The police said that Eaton had been asphyxiated. Minor stab wounds were also found on her body, but police said they were not believed to be the cause of her death. The police believe the body was dumped inside the cave, because it was found face down.Lagoudakis told CNN on Thursday that he had never seen a case like this in his four years as police chief.'A truly wonderful person'Tributes from Eaton's relatives -- including her mother, son and siblings -- 1299
The Phoenix Police Department released video Wednesday of a frightening moment involving a red-light runner and a family crossing the street with a stroller.Police say the incident happened near 53rd Avenue and Indian School Road on October 14, around 10 p.m. Watch video of the incident in the player above. The family says Ulysses Betancourt, his wife Gabrielle and 1-year-old son Damian were on the way to the grocery store after riding the bus. Police say the driver who ran the red-light, 28-year-old Ernesto Otanez Oveso, was driving under the influence at the time. The driver with the right-of-way in the crash was injured, but the injuries were not life-threatening.After the crash, police say Oveso fled the scene along with a female passenger. Oveso allegedly told a witness that was following him to get away, and stabbed the car door of the witness. "He could've taken people's family members away, innocent people. Why would you do such a thing?" said Ulysses's sister, Abby Betancourt. "I'm so glad I'm going to see my brother. I love him and my sister-in-law." Oveso has been arrested and faces charges for DUI, aggravated assault and prohibited possession after a gun was found in his Jeep. The female passenger has not been located. 1263
A hotel cook apparently upset over human resources issues has been arrested for allegedly planning a mass shooting of his coworkers and guests at a Marriott property in Long Beach, California, city police said Wednesday.A tip from a colleague led police to arrest Rodolfo Montoya, 37, at his Huntington Beach home, Chief Robert Luna said at a news conference.Police seized firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and tactical gear, including high-capacity magazines and an assault rifle, which are illegal to possess in California, Long Beach Police said in a news release."Suspect Montoya had clear plans, intent, and the means to carry out an act of violence that may have resulted in a mass-casualty incident," Luna said.Montoya will appear in court as early as Thursday, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokesman Ricardo Santiago said. It was not immediately clear whether Montoya has an attorney. At least 28 people have been arrested over threats to commit mass attacks since massacres this month in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Just after the shootings, the FBI director issued a directive for agency offices nationwide to conduct a new threat assessment.Montoya doesn't appear to have a criminal history that would prevent him from legally owning the types of guns allowed in California, Luna said.He was booked on manufacturing and distributing assault weapons, possession of an assault weapon and making a criminal threat and is being held on 0,000 bail at the Long Beach City Jail, the news release states. The district attorney's office expects the police department to present its case Thursday, Santiago told CNN. 1662
