Classified as a private school, the pre-kindergarten-to-12th grade school combines homeschooling with several days of in-person instruction every week.The plans come despite the governor’s orders banning in-school classes for counties still on the watch list. Right now, San Diego County remains on that list.Principal Lynda Hansen told ABC 10news, it's "important" for kids to be back in class, adding her school is "following all CDC guidelines."The state is allowing elementary schools to apply for waivers to the COVID-19 orders. Hansen says she'll apply for the waiver, but it likely won't affect her decision to open.The school’s COVID-19 section does list its precautions, including stepped-up disinfecting, encouraging social distancing, and masks for staff when close to students. Masks will not be mandatory for students.The mask issue is a point of concern for students at another private school with similar plans. Last week, ABC 10News reported on Foothills Christian Middle School in El Cajon.A letter sent to parents spelled out reopening plans in September, including masks being optional. That led to frustration for parents who emailed ABC 10News. (KGTV) — One person is dead after a fire tore through an East County home early Saturday.The fire broke out just before 3 a.m. at a residence located on Demona Place in Spring Valley. Fire fighters responded and were told by a neighbor that a 50-year-old man may still be inside the home. San Diego Sheriff's deputies tried to make contact with anyone inside, but nobody answered.Crews were able to force their way into the residence and begin extinguishing the fire, which had fully engulfed the home.One man was found inside the home and pulled from the living room area.SDSO says the man's injuries were unknown, but he likely suffered from smoke inhalation. He was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.Bomb Arson investigated were requested to the scene, but the origin and cause of the blaze were not known Saturday. 873

Southwest Airlines will look less like a zoo.Passengers will be allowed to bring only cats and dogs on board as emotional support animals beginning in September, and only one per customer. The animals must be on a leash or in a carrier at all times.Southwest says passengers will need to present a letter from a doctor or licensed mental health professional on the day of departure.The airline will also limit the types of trained service animals in the cabin. Only dogs, cats and miniature horses will be allowed. Service animals are specially trained to help people with disabilities.Fliers have become increasingly bold in bringing animals on planes.In January, a woman reportedly tried to board a United Airlines flight with an emotional support peacock. SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — A construction worker was killed in an accident at Monte Vista High School hours after the topping out of the school's new multi-use facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the accident happened just before 2 p.m.Deputies say the 30-year-old man fell from a beam attached to a 30-foot platform. Deputies and emergency responders performed first aid on the construction worker, but he later died after being taken to the hospital. A second worker was also injured and taken to the hospital, but their condition is unknown at this time, according to the school district. CA-OSHA is investigating the incident and crisis counselors will be made available at the school Thursday.
