BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday pledged to increase cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).     Wen told visiting UNDP Administrator Helen Clark that the Chinese government applauded the UNDP's assistance and support.     Hailing the UNDP's efforts in global development and poverty reduction, Wen spoke highly of the UNDP's positive role in the progress toward achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).     Clark expressed her appreciation for China's achievements in its social and economic development, hoping to work with the country to expand cooperation to jointly cope with challenges.     Clark was here on a visit at the invitation of the Ministry of Commerce of China.

BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun congratulated Tuesday the publication of the latest edition of the most authoritative encyclopedic dictionary of the Chinese language "Cihai", or "sea of words."     Li, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, expressed his gratitude to experts for their constant improvement of the dictionary and their "contribution to the prosperity of the socialist culture," in a meeting with the experts engaged in this "significant cultural project." It had removed 7,000 outdated or rarely used terms and included 12,300 new ones.     The latest edition has been on sale in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai.     The first edition of Cihai came out in 1936. It has been revised every 10 years and this year was published ahead of the National Day on Oct. 1.

HUA HIN, Thailand, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday proposed strengthening cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China, Japan and South Korea to combat the global financial crisis. "Tackling the global financial crisis should remain the top priority for countries in the region at present," Wen said at the 12th summit between ASEAN and China, Japan and South Korea (ASEAN Plus Three) at the Thai beach resort of Hua Hin.     The countries within the ASEAN Plus Three system should further promote integration, peace and prosperity in the region by launching concrete cooperation efforts, he added. BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin said here Wednesday that China will strengthen political mutual trust, expand substantial cooperation and promote common development with Belarus.     Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, hailed bilateral ties during a meeting with Vladimir Andreichenko, chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.     He applauded the cooperation with Belarus on politics, economy, culture and international affairs, saying the two countries supported each other on some major issues of common concerns and brought about tangible benefits for the two peoples.     Jia pledged to promote exchanges and cooperation between the CPPCC and Belarussian parliament in a bid to further bilateral ties.     Andreichenko commended China's economic growth and increasingly important role on the international arena, saying that his country and the Belarussian parliament will further cooperation with China.

CHENGDU, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China will send two giant pandas to Australia Friday for a cooperative research program.     The four-year-old male panda "Wang Wang" and three-year-old female panda "Fu Ni" will stay in Australia for 10 years, said Zhang Hemin, chief of the Wolong Nature Reserve Administration in southwest China's Sichuan Province.     "Wang Wang", which means "net" in Chinese, is 119 kg and "Fu Ni", which means "lucky girl", is 90 kg. They were quarantined on Oct. 21 for their trip to Australia.     "Wang Wang" and "Fu Ni" were transferred to the Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding Center in Ya'an City after the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center where they were living were destroyed in the May 12 massive earthquake in 2008.     The Australian side had sent veterinaries and feeders of the two pandas to China for training. It had also set up a 10 hectares bamboo planting base, Zhang said.     The two pandas will receive a body check Tuesday before their departure.     China and Australia made an agreement in 2007 on the cooperative research.     Giant pandas, known for being sexually inactive, are among the world's most endangered animals due to shrinking habitat.     There are about 1,590 pandas living in China's wild, mostly in Sichuan and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu.
