ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A 19-year-old’s call for help on social media after experiencing homelessness ended with an overwhelming amount of support from the community.Caleb Dershem recently moved to Escondido from Ohio in March.“I wanted to get more experience, try new things,” he said.He had a job driving for DoorDash and a roof over his head, but after some struggles, he ended up without a home in June, sleeping in his car.The car that became his shelter was stolen last week. In need of a place to rest his head, Dershem took to Facebook to post in the Escondido Friends group.“My car I have been sleeping in has been stolen, and I need a place to stay for the night while I wait till morning for the shelter resources to open. If anyone knows any safe places, let me know, please. I’m 19 and from Ohio,” he wrote.Moments later, dozens of North County residents reached out to Dershem offering advice."It's overwhelming to find out how many good people are actually out there," he said. "All I asked for was a place to stay for the night."There was one stranger, a man named Mike Shaw, who would answer Dershem’s call for help.“Our goal is to get some information from him, find out where he is, find out briefly what’s going on,” said Shaw. “And we put him in a hotel.”But the help didn’t end there. Shaw is the Executive Director of Southern California Youth Emergency Services, or SoCalYes.The nonprofit provides help for youth in situations like Dershem’s.“We focus on street outreach and education, focusing on youth that are 12 to 24 years old on the streets homeless,” he explained.Less than a week later, Shaw helped Dershem secure a one-bedroom apartment, next they’re working on full-time employment and replacing his stolen car.“Get him stable, get him some counseling, get him a vehicle and get him employed,” said Shaw speaking of the next steps. “Make him a productive member of our society and our community.”Dershem said he's ready to get back on track.“Mike’s been great to me, helping me with a plan to get myself together, and I appreciate him a lot,” said Dershem.It was an act of kindness that possibly changed Dershem’s life. FALLBROOK (CNS) - One person was killed on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook early Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash that may have involved alcohol, authorities said.California Highway Patrol officers were first alerted to the crash shortly after 5 a.m. when a truck driver reported seeing a damaged car with an injured person inside stop momentarily at the truck scales in Rainbow before continuing on northbound I-15, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe said.Officers called hospitals in Temecula and Murrieta to check if there were any walk-in patients who could have been involved in the crash, and eventually were alerted that apparent victims had turned up at Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta, according to a CHP incident log.One passenger involved in the crash, identified as a 20-year-old man from Winchester, was pronounced dead at the hospital, Latulippe said. Another passenger, a 21-year-old Torrance man, sustained moderate injuries and the driver, a 23-year-old man also from Torrance, was not injured.The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Latulippe said.Officers were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and determined it occurred on northbound I-15 past state Route 76.Evidence suggested that the car struck a call box, lost control toward the center divider and may have returned to the right shoulder before continuing on the freeway, Latulippe said.Officers asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the CHP Border Communications Center at (858) 637-3800. 1538

ENCINITAS (KGTV) -- The Encinitas Environmental Commission is considering a proposal to ban natural gas hookups in all new construction projects as a way to combat climate change.The plan, which will be heard by the commission again next month, was authored by environmental commissioner Jim Wang. Wang spearheaded the city’s bans on plastic bags and polystyrene containers, commonly known as styrofoam.“The problem is that methane is a much more potent global warming gas than CO2, it’s approximately 85 times as potent,” he said. “Even a small amount of natural gas causes a big problem with global warming.”RELATED: Encinitas proposes ban on gas-powered leaf blowersWang’s proposal would impact both residential and commercial construction, but would not affect existing buildings. In July, Berkley passed a ban on natural gas infrastructure in new construction that will take effect next year. Twenty other California cities are considering similar bans, Wang said.“I’ve never seen a restaurant run on electric stove-tops. I’ve tried to cook on an electric stove at home and you don’t get the same consistency,” he said.Michael McSweeney of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County said the cost of electricity is typically about three times more than natural gas, so the cost of home ownership in Encinitas would rise.“It seems that they want to reduce their carbon footprint, which is great, but the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Encinitas is automobile transportation,” he said. “Cutting down on car transportation, they’d get more bang for their buck.”Transportation accounts for 54 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in Encinitas. Electricity accounts for 23 percent. Natural gas ranks third on the list, at 13 percent, according to the city’s 2018 Climate Action Plan.“Yes, it may be a little more expensive but it’s for the greater good,” Wang said.In addition to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, restrictions on natural gas could provide safety and health benefits, Wang argued, citing the 2010 San Bruno pipeline explosion that killed 8 people.Homes that cook with natural gas at least once per week have air quality that would be illegal outdoors, he said, with levels of nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde that exceed outdoor federal air quality standards.The Environmental Commission will consider the proposal at its Dec. 12 meeting at 5:30 pm. She closed the restaurant Sunday afternoon as soon as she found out her employee tested positive."Ironically, one of my best employees with the mask, like she never took that mask down," Kris Buchanan.Buchanan arranged for her staff of roughly 40 people to get tested for the virus antibodies Monday afternoon. If they test positive for antibodies, she'll pay for them to get the coronavirus test.The organic restaurant will reopen July 3, but only for pick up and delivery.
