SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Like Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and many others, INOVIO Pharmaceuticals has also raced to develop a COVID-19 vaccine this year.“We’ve been working really hard to move our vaccine through the stages of clinical testing. Some things have taken a little bit longer than we hoped. I think that’s kind of always the case when you’re trying to go at great light speed,” said Dr. Kate Broderick, INOVIO Pharmaceuticals Senior VP of Research & Development based in San Diego.Broderick said with funding from the U.S. Department of Defense, the biotech company started its Phase 2 clinical trial evaluating its DNA vaccine candidate, INO-4800.The first U.S. participants received a dose of the experimental vaccine earlier this month. Approximately 400 adults in the U.S. are expected to be enrolled in the trial by the end of the month.“We hope that in the early part of 2021, we’ll be going into a really large Phase 3 trial where we’re asking the question does our vaccine protect against the disease itself,” she said.Broderick said the company hopes to enroll about 6,000 participants initially in its Phase 3 trial once they get the green light to begin.A press release from the company last week stated that “The Phase 3 segment of the INNOVATE remains on partial clinical hold until INOVIO satisfactorily resolves the FDA’s remaining questions related to the CELLECTRA 2000 device that will be used to deliver INO-4800 into the cells of the skin.”Earlier data released from Pfizer and Moderna’s studies showing high vaccine efficacy was positive news for INOVIO.“We feel that we’re in a really good place. There’s eight billion people on the planet, and we’re certainly going to need quite a few different types of vaccines to ensure everybody is protected,” she said. “The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are RNA vaccines; ours is DNA vaccine”Broderick said one significant benefit of INOVIO’S DNA vaccine candidate is it doesn’t have to be stored in low-temperature freezers, making it easier to ship out worldwide if approved.“In fact, we can keep it at room temperature, sitting on a desk somewhere for a year with no impact,” she said.INOVIO is projecting to have 100 million doses of its vaccine ready in 2021.“With these vaccines being approved, there is definitely an end in sight, but don’t let your guard down too fast,” she said. “Unfortunately, until everyone in the country gets vaccinated, we will still have to adhere to those kinds of annoying things, wearing masks, socially distancing. The annual event, known for its color team names and characters, started locally in the 1950s and has since become a highlight of summertime in San Diego.What more can you ask for during the sweltering heat? The batter's goal is to hit the ball into fair territory (over the line) without a fielder catching it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Jessica Reilly, a Navy Air Traffic Controller currently based out of San Diego, has a high-stress job, but turns to her artistic side as an outlet. She combines her passion for the Navy with creating comics, adding a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons (which she learned from her husband) to create Gobbo the Goblin, a Navy sailor.“I have managed to breed a comic series for the Navy that is also targeted toward Dungeons and Dragons players,” she said, laughing.She said she’s loved art since she was a child, and started drawing her first comics on whiteboards while aboard Navy ships. It’s grown from there. She has a cartoon version of herself that goes on adventures with Gobbo. She said her real-life experiences combined with stories from other sailors motivate the storylines, frequently making fun of the daily woes of Navy life.“There is an outlet and a want for people to see comics kind of tongue and cheek of their own culture,” she said.She said this comedic relief is a good mental break from a tense job.“My job, even though it’s stressful, especially as an Air Traffic Controller, I can take a break, and I can remind everybody else that it’s not so stressful,” she said.Her art has turned into a family business. Her husband, who is a Navy veteran and currently in the Army reserves, writes comic books and she illustrates them. She said the first time they teamed up, they brought the comic books to a show and they sold out on the spot. Their company, Five Realms, was supposed to have a table at Comic-Con, which was canceled this year. To win a spot at the show, they had to submit their comic book, which was reviewed by judges. “It’s a huge accomplishment for me and my husband and unfortunately it didn’t happen,” she said, adding that they hope to be there next year.Jessica’s work has been noticed by the Navy. She’s been selected to do an Instagram takeover of the Navy’s “At the Helm” page during the week of October 25. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer Saturday detailed plans to redevelop the Sports Arena site, officially announcing what developers will tackle the project.According to Faulconer, the plan incorporates a mix of entertainment, housing, and parks."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."Brookfield Housing and ASM Global were chosen to construct the new arena and thousands of housing units, beating out the other finalist, Toll Brothers Housing.The redevelopment area encompasses roughly 48 acres in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community area. At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. Faulconer said the city's goal is to include a new arena to replace Pechanga Arena."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said.
