She has two 55-gallon rain barrels that she uses to water the plants, and she also captures rainwater from her roof."We have it go down the gutter, into this little piping system. That goes under the ground, the sidewalk, under this bed and comes out to the tomatoes over here," said Thompson.Even the housing for her chickens has multiple uses. The coop catches rainwater which leads to a cherry tree. And, since the chickens are only 3-feet tall, she built a greenhouse on one side, allowing the chickens to roam underneath."With chickens, they give us eggs, but also they give us manure, and we can actually turn that manure into the soil and have more fertile soil," said Thompson.Thompson has been growing on her lot since she moved in nine years ago. She says especially now with COVID-19, more and more people are planting on their own land. She says seeds and plants are hard to come by."That’s a good sign to me. Sometimes we need a crisis to kind of wake us up to be active and to really see where some of our vulnerabilities are," said Thompson.She says while we’re not in a food emergency right now, she feels secure knowing she could live off her yield."If there was a food supply chain kink, for whatever reason, I know I can still go outside and get my food and know how to preserve it," said Thompson.But there’s also a sense of pride in her tiny farm by doing something our ancestors did many generations ago."When I go out here, and I see the plants growing and changing from winter to the end of summer, I feel so satisfied on a deeper level that I know how to do this," said Thompson.Through her tiny farm school, she teaches kids and adults how to start and build their own urban homestead."When I bring students here and they learn, it’s beautiful. They are like, 'I want to do something like this.' I’ve had several people say that they want to start schools too to share this information. It’s empowering," said Thompson. 2619

NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - People who live next to the 8th hole at the National City Golf Course are fed up with damage from errant tee shots."It's a huge problem," says Karen Hovik. She says golf balls have broken three windshields on her car and left countless dents and scratches."I watch people, and they try to swing like Happy Gilmore while they're filming it," she says, noting that golfers take aggressive swings and don't seem to care where their ball lands.A chain link fence lines the property between the golf course and the condo complex. Hovik and her neighbors want the city or the course management company to put up tall nets, similar to the ones near the driving range."It's not just property damage," says Hovik. "Somebody could get really hurt and injured by that." Hovik says she's been hit by golf balls several times while walking near her home.A representative from the golf course told 10News they take the issue very seriously, and they've posted signs along the course telling the golfers they are responsible for any damage done by bad shots. NASHVILLE, Ind. — A faculty advisor for the yearbook at a high school in Indiana has been suspended without pay for two weeks for a photo caption that referred to a Black student as "Black Guy" instead of the student's name.Brown County Schools Superintendent Dr. Laur Hammack and high school principal Matthew Stark made the announcement in a letter to the district on Friday.The mistaken caption printed in Brown County High School's 2020 yearbook."Our investigation did not identify any students (currently enrolled or graduated) who were involved in the creation of the offensive content," the district's statement read. "We believe the content was created by the faculty advisor for the yearbook; he will no longer serve in that role. Additionally, this same faculty member is being suspended without pay for two weeks."The district did not identify the staff member nor say whether the advisor is also a teacher."Both the family of the student and the former faculty advisor involved have committed to a restorative conference where the harm that was caused is acknowledged, the individual causing the harm is held accountable, and an honest discussion about the harm caused by this inexcusable act is conducted," the district's statement read.The district said that the discussion will and needs to continue."We are having meaningful conversations with students, families, and members of the larger Brown County community to help ensure an incident of this type will never happen again," the district said. "We will continue to keep you informed of our efforts."The caption was in a photo of one of the high school's basketball teams."We remain deeply grateful for the ongoing engagement of the student and family involved in being a collaborative partner in rejecting discrimination of all types and against anyone," the district said in its statement. Mourners lined up to pay their respects to Rayshard Brooks in a public viewing at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. A gold-colored coffin carrying the body of the man who was fatally shot by police arrived at the church just under an hour before the viewing was set to begin Monday. A handful of people were waiting outside well before the church opened. Officer Garrett Rolfe fatally shot Brooks in the back when Brooks fired a Taser in his direction while running away after a struggle on June 12. Rolfe is white. Brooks was Black. Rolfe was fired and is jailed without bond on a murder charge.Following Brooks' viewing, a memorial service will be held for him on Tuesday in Atlanta. 697
