SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Midwife is living her dream of opening her own birth center, helping minority women.We met Nikki Helms in July when her GoFundMe was off the charts, raising more than 1,000.She had been a licensed midwife for about a year and wanted to open a birth center. Fast forward to December and her dream is coming true."We've got signage and I stood at the foot of my stairs and cried about that," Helms said filled with gratitude. The community has continued to wrap their arms around her mission."It's really just been amazing and overwhelming, and I feel so blessed," she said wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "And so grateful and I get teared up every time I start talking about it because it gives me the opportunity to go care for families and you know it just blows my mind."Since July she's raised another ,000 and packages keep arriving on her doorstep with items for the birth center.Her mission is to support women through childbirth and beyond. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After eight weeks of rehabilitation, SeaWorld San Diego rescue teams release seven rescued sea lions back into the ocean. Six of the sea lions were malnourished pups when they were first rescued. It took rescue crews about two months to help them regain their strength and nutrients needed. The seventh sea lion was discovered on La Jolla Shores with a shark bite wound to his shoulder. Rescue crews tell 10News they watched him for three days and then took him to their veterinarians because they noticed he wasn't using his left fin at all. After x-rays, SeaWorld San Diego vets discovered several broken bones in his front left fin and his left shoulder was snapped in half. Intense rehabilitation over the past eight weeks has him in good condition to return to the wild Tuesday. During the rescue return trip, General Hospital actress and dedicated animal advocate Carolyn Hennesy joined. Hennesy works closely with the SeaWorld San Diego rescue center and often joins them on return trips. As part of tradition, before animals are released, Hennesy said a few words to the sea lions, "Considering myself part of the SeaWorld family, I will say it was wonderful having you." All seven were released into the ocean about an hour from shore. SeaWorld San Diego tells 10News they've rescued over 600 animals in 2019 already including, 137 sea lions. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego woman has been reunited with her four-legged soulmate after he was stolen and sold on Craigslist.Kameroun Mares bought her dog Semper Fidelis after her battle with leukemia.“Yes, it’s the Marine Corps motto, but in Latin, it translates to 'Always Faithful,'" said Mares. “He is always faithful to me.”After a few years together the two moved to Florida for what Mares thought would be a fresh start.RELATED: Slow-moving search for owner of El Cajon tortoiseHowever, it turned out to be the start of a nightmare. While on a trip back to California for a medical appointment her roommate said Semper had run away.“I had so many nightmares of what, where is he? Why did I not get a phone call? He has a microchip, why did I not get a call?"Her desperate search turned no leads, and eventually, she moved back to California, continuing the search digitally.A year later, someone in a forum suggested checking Semper’s microchip on the American Animal Hospital Association microchip database.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Affording the cost of pet ownershipIt showed the microchip as being registered to both Mares and a second owner.Mares' ex-roommate sold Semper on Craigslist for 0.The people who bought him were able to register the microchip with a different company, Pet Key.“What’s the point of having a microchip if another company can add its details without checking with you?" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shark advisory is being issued Tuesday after witnesses reported seeing a five-foot-long shark near Black's Beach. According to Mónica Mu?oz with San Diego Fire-Rescue, the advisory is in place from the Mushroom House north to Bathtub Rock, also known as Flat Rock. “Some witnesses reported seeing a shark of about five feet in length which does not reach the threshold of a significant threat. However, the number of witnesses and the feeding behavior observed influenced the lifeguards’ decision to issue the advisory,” Mu?oz said. Just after 12:30 p.m., a group of 25 surfers got out of the water at Black's Beach after reportedly seeing a shark eating a sea lion. Another group of people reported similar information to a lifeguard. In the same area, Mu?oz says lifeguards witnessed a large sea lion eating a fish. The department says there were either two separate sightings in the area, or witnesses all saw a sea lion feeding on a fish, but mistook it for a shark. “We are acting out of an abundance of caution,” Mu?oz added. Lifeguards are conducting active patrols in the area to let people know what witnesses saw. Mu?oz says lifeguards are advising against water activity; however, the water is not closed to people who choose to enter. Signs will also be posted in the area. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Strike Team called to battle the Kincade Fire returned home Halloween night, and told 10News of the harrowing fight.The team was comprised of five engines and 21 firefighters from Imperial Beach, Coronado, San Diego, and Chula Vista, according to Battalion Chief Rob Hartman. The group spent four days on the front lines."The resources were very limited just because of everything going on in the state," Hartman said, adding there was no air support in the area where they were fighting the fire.Another challenge they faced was, "just finding a water source. Sometimes out in the country, it's not like there's a fire hydrant every 300 feet. We had to drive a ways to get water to fill up and get back into the fight again."Hartman said they got hardly any sleep and worked in constant dark smoke and strong winds."This is your area, you want to save everything but there are just times where it's just not going to happen."Hartman said it was a struggle to save some homes. One firefighter spotted a home down a narrow driveway that was starting to catch fire."It was just so dangerous, the road was so narrow, there was no place to turn around. The house was already, it was going to be over the amount of water we had and we had to just turn to the guy and say this is going to be a loser. We're not going to be able to do this safely," Hartman said.He described the struggle of losing any businesses or homes during the battle, "you try to put yourself in the position of the owner, so you want to safe the house, you want to save every house... Sometimes it's a little heart-wrenching."Ultimately the strike team stopped the fire line, protecting the City of Windsor.Hartman said they remain ready to deploy if needed. 1764
