SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Strong Santa Ana winds moved through San Diego County Tuesday, toppling a big rig as it traveled on Interstate 8 near Alpine. The crash happened at 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes at Willows Road, blocking the left lane for about an hour and a half, CHP officer Jim Bettencourt reported. Another semi overturned on Interstate 15 in Fontana. San Diegan Bashar Shebo was driving through the area on his way to Las Vegas. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather “So crazy man, the car was going left and right, left and right like this, barely could control it,” said Bashar Shebo. “We just saw a trailer was flipped over on the side.” The High Wind Warning was in effect through 10 p.m. for the mountain areas, with a Wind Advisory for the inland communities. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather “The coast will see easterly gusts up to 35 miles per hour while the deserts will have southeasterly winds up to 25 miles per hour,” said 10News Meteorologist Megan Parry. San Diego County’s mountain towns saw the strongest gusts of 91 miles per hour in Hellhole Canyon, 88 miles per hour in Fremont Canyon, and 77 miles per hour in Sill Hill. The Santa Ana conditions could end by next Monday with a chance of showers in the forecast, Parry said. Not sure video does it justice but it sure is windy up here east of Alpine. She was selected to lead the city's police force by then-Mayor-elect Kevin Faulconer in February 2014.Zimmerman took over the position from William Landsdowne, who stepped down from chief after more than 10 years following a growing scandal of sexual misconduct against SDPD officers.RELATED: New San Diego police Chief David Nisleit sworn inZimmerman departs SDPD after a 35-year career in the police force after moving to San Diego from Ohio in 1981. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some seniors say they’re hitting a frustrating roadblock of red tape at the DMV. They say health concerns aside, the state has made getting into a field office to complete requirements impossible.Although many DMV tasks can be completed online, the agency requires an in-person visit for several types of service. Once drivers hit the age of 70, the DMV requires them to renew their licenses in-person to take vision and knowledge tests. The DMV has granted drivers aged 70 and up a four-month extension to renew licenses, but only for licenses that expire through July 31. For drivers like Charrie Pettersen, whose license expires 12 days later in August, there is no extension.RELATED: More California DMV offices reopen, six in San Diego, for appointmentsTo renew her license, Pettersen needs an appointment. But the DMV isn’t offering new appointments, as it works through the backlog of visits that were canceled during the months-long closure. The DMV is only accepting walk-ups for a handful for services, and not for seniors seeking license renewal.“It's ridiculous and I think the governor should do something,” she said. The agency has been opaque about when it will begin accepting new appointments. An employee at the DMV office in University Heights said the office would begin accepting new appointments for all types of service July 1, but a media spokesperson would not confirm that date.RELATED: DMV reopening all remaining field offices across California this week “DMV offices will be processing all transactions in the near future once the COVID related backlog is addressed, however there is no set date yet,” the spokesperson said in an email Friday.Pettersen, who has an underlying health condition and whose husband has COPD, isn’t comforted by the idea that she’ll be allowed to make an appointment “in the near future.”“Are you gonna put our lives in danger? You’ve been saying to stay home. We’ve been following the rules. Can’t you do something for us?” she said. 2016

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University is going to lose its one and only Christian sorority house. Builders plan to tear it down and put up more housing for students.Alpha Delta Chi sorority sister Madison Zeber walked us through the halls of the sorority house near campus, where 15 women live. The walls are covered with old, handwritten messages of faith. On the outside of the house, there’s a new message. A notice was recently posted by the City of San Diego, of plans to close the only Christian sorority. A private party plans to replace it with 42 units of new housing, intended for students. A neighboring single-family home and fraternity house will also be lost. “It would definitely be heart-breaking,” says sorority sister Carissa Thompson. She was a transfer student and has been living in the house for a year. “Coming here, I definitely wanted to make sure that I had a good, Christian community and I definitely found that here.”The SDSU Research Foundation owns and leases the houses, and tells 10News that the development plans were announced last fall. The sisters won't have to vacate the sorority house until 2020, when their lease is up. “We're trying to fight for this and take it one step at a time,” says the sorority president Alexis Kojo. It’s just one of a series of housing concerns for SDSU students. By this fall, all current, non-local sophomore students must live on-campus. It's called the Sophomore Success Program. Some students say it’s a costly requirement for those of little means, but the school's website reads, “Data show that students who live on campus are better prepared academically, enjoy an increased sense of community and campus connectedness, and graduate at faster rates than those who do not.”Alpha Delta Chi’s lot will not be used for Sophomore Success Program, but that doesn't change much for these sisters. No matter what, they'll have to start packing. “Our way of connecting to the school would be gone. Our sense of identity as Christians on this campus [and] SDSU students would be kind of taken away,” adds Kojo. The sorority says there are public meetings to discuss the redevelopment plans. The sisters say the meetings will take place April 3 and April 10 at the nearby Faith Presbyterian Church. 2278

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since a movie theater was first added to Horton Plaza in 1985, San Diegans downtown have had cinema options at their fingertips. That is, until the plaza fell on tough times, as business slowed and patrons gained more options for retail and entertainment downtown. The trend has now reached the plaza's Regal movie theater, which closed its doors this year. A sign posted on the entrance of the theater says the location was to close on Jan. 27.Since then, Regal Theaters says theater-goers should visit the next closest location — Rancho Del Rey — to redeem discounted tickets or gift cards.RELATED: Plans for Horton Plaza mall reveal tech campus, retail revitalizationThe departure of the theater heralds the next phase planned for the once iconic shopping center, as only a few businesses remain.Plans revealed last year show real estate firm Stockdale Capital Partners, which has purchased the property in 2018, has other ideas. A hub for mixed-use offices, retail, restaurants and a new name: The Campus at Horton. The firm plans to use the center to cater to the tech industry, moving past the center's prime days as a shopping center and into a vision that includes green space, technology employers, and "captivating entertainment."RELATED: Grocery chain suing Horton Plaza over millions in sales lossesConstruction on Stockdale's project is expected to start this year, while the renovation is slated to be completed in fall 2020. 1463
