LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Three men were named Wednesday in a Los Angeles federal grand jury indictment that alleges they distributed narcotics, including counterfeit pharmaceutical pills containing fentanyl, that resulted in the overdose death of hip-hop artist Mac Miller.Cameron James Pettit, 28, of West Hollywood; Stephen Andrew Walter, 46, of Westwood; and Ryan Michael Reavis, 36, a former West Los Angeles resident who relocated to Lake Havasu, Arizona, earlier this year, are charged with conspiring to distribute controlled substances resulting in death and distribution of fentanyl resulting in death. Each of those counts carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in federal prison and a potential sentence of life without parole, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Walter alone is additonally charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition, which, if he were to be convicted, would result in a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison.Court documents allege the three defendants distributed narcotics to 26-year-old Malcolm James McCormick -- who recorded and performed under the name Mac Miller -- two days before the entertainer suffered a fatal drug overdose in Studio City on Sept. 7, 2018.The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner later determined that Miller died of mixed drug toxicity involving fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.According to the indictment, late on the night of Sept. 4, Pettit agreed to supply the rapper with 10 ``blues'' -- a street term for oxycodone pills -- as well as cocaine and the sedative Xanax. But instead of providing Miller with genuine oxycodone when he made the delivery during the early morning hours of Sept. 5, Pettit provided counterfeit oxycodone pills that contained fentanyl -- a powerful synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin, according to the indictment. The indictment alleges that Pettit ordered the fentanyl-laced pills from Walter, and then Reavis delivered the narcotics to Pettit. Investigators believe that Miller died after snorting the counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl allegedly provided by Pettit. While another individual supplied Miller with other drugs prior to his death, those narcotics did not contain fentanyl, prosecutors said.Less than one month after Miller's death, Walter agreed to sell Pettit another 10 blues, according to the indictment, which also alleges other drug deals between the two men, with one as recent as Aug. 30. The indictment further alleges that Reavis was involved in drug trafficking activities in June and quotes a text message he sent after realizing he was negotiating a narcotics transaction with an unknown person that reads, in part: ``People have been dying from fake blues left and right, you better believe law enforcement is using informants and undercover to buy them on the street ... they can start putting (people) in prison for life for selling fake pills.''U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna said it has become ``increasingly common for us to see drug dealers peddling counterfeit pharmaceuticals made with fentanyl. As a consequence, fentanyl is now the number one cause of overdose deaths in the United States.''Hanna alleged that the three defendants continued to sell narcotics after Miller's death, ``with full knowledge of the risks their products posed to human life.''Special Agent in Charge William D. Bodner of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Los Angeles Field Division warned that counterfeit pharmaceutical pills are especially dangerous because users are unable to verify what they are ingesting.``The tragic death of Mac Miller is a high-profile example of the tragedy that is occurring on the streets of America every day,'' Bodner said, adding that the indictment ``highlights the efforts of DEA agents, local law enforcement officers, and prosecutors who work tirelessly to bring dangerous drug dealers to justice.''Pettit, who was previously ordered detained after being charged in a criminal complaint with distributing narcotics to McCormick, is scheduled to be arraigned in downtown Los Angeles on the indictment on Oct. 10.Walter was arrested on Sept. 23 on a criminal complaint alleging conspiracy to distribution narcotics, and he was also ordered held without bond. Walter also is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment Oct. 10.Reavis, who was taken into federal custody in Arizona on Sept. 26 on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, is currently in custody and is being transported to Los Angeles by the U.S. Marshals Service. 4553

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Monday is Kobe Bryant Day in Los Angeles and Orange County, honoring the late Los Angeles Lakers star, and it'll be highlighted by a move to rename a downtown stretch of Figueroa Street outside Staples Center in recognition of his legacy."This is a gift to the city of Los Angeles and to all the Kobe Bryant fans around the world," City Councilman Curren Price said in a statement announcing a proposal to rename the street. "L.A. streets will rise in honor of the 'King of L.A.'"Price and Councilman Herb Wesson plan to introduce a motion Tuesday calling for the stretch of Figueroa between Olympic and Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards to be named "Kobe Bryant Boulevard." That stretch covers the portion of the street from roughly Staples Center to Exposition Park.A 2016 Los Angeles City Council resolution declared Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day in perpetuity, on the date of the jersey numbers he wore with the team. Bryant wore the No. 8 his first 10 seasons and 24 for the final 10.City Councilman Jose Huizar, who introduced the resolution, said Bryant should be admired not just because he is "unbelievably talented," but because he "has taught all of us in Los Angeles that this city has a fighting spirit.""It doesn't matter how down you are," Huizar said. "It doesn't matter what hardships you face. You keep showing up, you keeping practicing, you keep going and yes you keep winning and here in L.A."The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted Aug. 11 to declare Aug. 24 as Kobe Bryant Day. Bryant was a resident of Newport Beach.Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Michelle Steel, who introduced the motion, called Bryant a "treasured member of our community," who "inspired so many men and women to pursue their dreams and never give up."On Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers honored the memories of Kobe and Gianna Bryant on what would have been his 42nd birthday.During ceremonies before the 11-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies, Dodger players donned Kobe Bryant's Nos. 8 and 24 jerseys and the team played a tribute video narrated by retired broadcaster Vin Scully."Kobe demonstrated that he was a man of many talents," Scully said. "He was a champion, a mentor, a creative force, an advocate."Kobe was also a husband and a father to four wonderful girls. The warrior that we knew as `The Black Mamba' was a sweetheart to his wife Vanessa and a proud `Girl Dad' to Natalia, Bianka, Capri and his daughter known as 'the Mambacita,' Gianna."Gigi was worthy of her dad's nickname. She shared his passion for basketball and so much more. He in turn wanted her to have every opportunity to succeed, and he believed that the women's game deserved as much respect and support as the men received."Kobe Bryant's No. 24 and Gianna's youth basketball No. 2 were painted on the pitcher's mound.Bryant played his entire 20-season career with the Lakers, helping them win five NBA championships, and was chosen as the NBA Finals MVP for both of the two most recent championships. The 6-foot-6-inch Bryant, a guard for most of his career but listed as a forward-guard in his final season, scored 33,643 points, the fourth-most in league history, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928) and LeBron James (34,241).James passed Bryant on the all-time list Jan. 25, one day before Kobe and Gianna Bryant and seven others were killed in a Jan. 26 helicopter crash in Calabasas. 3416

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Two Iranian men are facing federal charges for allegedly masterminding an international computer hacking scheme that used ransomware to extort about ,000 in Bitcoin from Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and also targeted dozens of other victims, including the Port of San Diego, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.Faramarz Shahi Savandi, 34, and Mohammad Mehdi Shah Mansouri, 27, were indicted by a federal grand jury in Newark, New Jersey, for the scheme that caused more than million in losses and allowed the alleged hackers to collect over million in ransom payments, according to the DOJ. The six-count indictment, unsealed Wednesday, alleges that Savandi and Mansouri, acting from inside Iran, authored malware capable of forcibly encrypting data on the computers of more than 200 victims, including Hollywood Presbyterian and the Port of San Diego. RELATED: Demand for Bitcoin included in Port of San Diego cyberattack ransom noteThe Port of San Diego revealed in September that it was working with federal law enforcement to find the culprit behind a cybersecurity attack that took place weeks earlier. The attack had temporary impacts on business services, park permits and public records requests, a port spokeswoman said. Ransomware was used in the attack and included a note requesting payment in Bitcoin. While some of the port's information technology systems were compromised, staff proactively shut down other systems to avoid further problems, the spokeswoman said. In February 2016, Hollywood Presbyterian announced it had paid a ransom of about ,000 in Bitcoin to restore its electronic medical record system after a cyber-attack that crippled its computer system but did not compromise patient care or patient and employee personal information. The attack prevented hospital staff from accessing selected computer systems and blocking electronic communications, medical center officials said. According to prosecutors, starting in December 2015, Savandi and Mansouri allegedly accessed victim computers through security vulnerabilities and installed the SamSam Ransomware. They then allegedly demanded ransom paid in the virtual currency Bitcoin in exchange for decryption keys for the encrypted data, collected payments and exchanged the Bitcoin into Iranian currancy using Iran-based Bitcoin exchangers. Assistant U.S. Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski described the scheme as ``21st-century digital blackmail'' in which the defendants allegedly used ransomware to ``infect the computer networks of municipalities, hospitals, and other key public institutions, locking out the computer owners, and then demanded millions of dollars in payments from them.'' Savandi and Mansouri are charged with one count each of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity in connection with computers, and two substantive counts each of intentional damage to a protected computer and transmitting a demand in relation to damaging a protected computer. The DOJ alleged that the men disguised the hacks to appear like legitimate network activity, launching attacks outside regular business hours, when victims would find it more difficult to fix the problem, and by encrypting backups of the victim computers. 3320

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Automobile Club of Southern California says it's expecting this year's Thanksgiving holiday to be the busiest in Southern California since 2005, with 4.2 million residents expected to get away for the long weekend. That's a 5.1 percent increase over last year, the AAA said in a statement. The vast majority of Southern California travelers -- 3.6 million or 86 percent of all travelers -- will drive to their destinations, a 5.1 percent increase over last year. Another 476,000 Southern Californians are expected to fly, which is an increase of 5.9 percent from the 2017 holiday, while 123,000 will go by other means, such as train, bus or cruise, which will represent a 1.2 percent increase over last year. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as five days from Wednesday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 25, and a holiday trip is defined as one of at least 50 miles from home. The all-time record number of Thanksgiving travelers was set in 2005, when 58.6 million nationwide, 6.9 million statewide and nearly 4.3 million in Southern California took holiday trips.RELATED: Check?traffic conditions for your holiday trip``Even with an average 5 percent increase in Thanksgiving holiday airfares over last year, consumer confidence has continued to increase demand for air-travel destinations,'' said Filomena Andre, the Auto Club's vice president for travel products and services.Anaheim is expected to be the third most popular destination for Thanksgiving travelers nationwide, according to AAA's online and travel agency bookings.  A survey of the Auto Club's travel agents reveals the top five destinations for Southern Californians this holiday are: 1) Las Vegas  2) San Diego  3) San Francisco  4) Grand Canyon  5) Anaheim. The transportation analytics firm INRIX, in collaboration with AAA,predicts drivers will experience the greatest amount of congestion Thanksgiving week during the early evening commute period, with travel times starting to increase on Monday. In general, the Auto Club recommends travelers plan an early morning start. If travelers' schedules are flexible, the best days to travel during Thanksgiving week will likely be early today, Friday and Saturday.``No matter when drivers leave for their holiday trips, we remind them, `Don't Drive Intoxicated,'' said Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring.``An increase in traffic requires extra focus on the road ahead and we want drivers to remember texting while driving could lead to the same deadly consequences as alcohol-impaired driving.''According to INRIX, the heaviest congestion period in Southern California will be between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, on southbound Interstate 5 between Pacific Coast Highway in south Orange County (Exit 79) and Coast Highway in Oceanside (Exit 54B). The worst time to leave from downtown Los Angeles for LAX via I-110 South over this holiday period, according toINRIX, will be Tuesday, Nov. 20 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.Southern California gas prices are dropping at a fairly steady pacefrom their highest levels since 2014 but are expected to still be 50 to 60 cents higher per gallon than during last year' holiday. The Auto Club recommends that travelers use a free app like AAA Mobile to shop virtually for the cheapest gas prices along their route.AAA expects to help 101,000 stranded drivers in California and nearly 360,000 at the roadside across the country during this Thanksgiving holiday.Dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts will be the main reasons for members to call AAA for a roadside rescue. AAA recommends motorists take their vehicle to a trusted repair facility to perform any needed maintenance before heading out. 3750
