A fashion designer had broken the record for largest afro for a female by three inches. Simone Williams’ hair measures 4 feet 10 inches in circumference, according to Guinness World Records.Williams has been growing her hair out for about 9 years, but she didn’t start wearing an afro with the record in mind. She told Guinness she got perms and straightened her hair in middle school to fit in, and wore her hair straight until college."I chose to transition [to natural hair] around the age of 23. It began because I wanted to save the money spent at the hair salon to help with the costs of moving into my first apartment,” Williams said in a release from Guinness. "The process was very difficult at first since I was accustomed to wearing my hair straight and I didn’t know how to manage my natural hair texture."Williams says it takes about 6 hours for her hair to dry, and she washes it about once a week. “I use a lot of conditioner because it helps detangle my hair. I section my hair into 4 twists while in shower,” she said."When my hair is fully styled and big and voluminous I get a lot of stares, a lot of comments, lots of compliments – I want to think that everything is positive, but there are some people who stare like they have no idea what’s going on or what they’re looking at,” Williams said.Williams said she was inspired by the previous record holder, Aevin Dugas, who held the women’s record for largest afro since 2012 with a circumference of 4 feet 7 inches.Dugas says as her hair has gotten longer, it’s gotten heavier and doesn’t stand out as much. She plans to get some layers cut and hopes to be in the running again for the largest afro."Rocking a natural ‘fro is something that really symbolizes your pride in being Black. And I feel like whenever I wear my hair very big and beautiful, I just feel that pride within me,” Williams said. Adding, “Styling my hair like this is a silent reflection of who I am as a Black woman, it’s dynamic, it’s larger than life, and it’s fun! A co-author of a criminal justice textbook that included convicted sexual assailant Brock Turner’s photo next to the section titled “Rape” is standing by their decision.Last week, a student at Washington State University posted a photo of the book page on Facebook, and it has since been shared over 100,000 times.Callie Rennison, a University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs professor and co-author of “Introduction to Criminal Justice: Systems, Diversity and Change,” said that the vast majority of reaction she’s received has been positive. However, critics have said that even though Turner’s crimes may fit the FBI definition of rape, he was not convicted of rape as defined by California law—instead he was convicted of sexual assault.Currently, the federal definition states that if there’s penetration “with any object, any body part, that’s not consensual, then that’s rape,” Rennison said. “Brock Turner was convicted of a penetration offense and under these definitions that’s rape.”Rennison also points out that critics may not have read the entire section of the book and missed some key context.“That particular section is about how definitions change over time,” Rennison said.In fact, California did alter their definition of rape, in part due to Turner's case.She says they will still add even more context in upcoming editions of the book, a fact the publisher confirmed, as well.She contends that the reason Turner’s image was used in the first place was to keep the curriculum current and thus relatable to students in 2017.“This is who students know and students talk about,” she said. “Contemporary references are a must. Looking at older books students aren’t engaged. They don’t think it applies to them in their world.”She also hopes it starts a larger conversation about punishment. A Land O' Lakes, Florida man who was just released from prison was arrested for attempted vehicle theft again before he even left the jail parking lot.Klaid Karpuzi, 41, was arrested when deputies say he tried to steal a truck with a teen in the backseat just three days earlier.As Karpuzi was walking through the jail parking lot following his release, he reportedly tried to get into a vehicle by walking around it, then pulling on the passenger door handle.Inside the vehicle was an off-duty deputy who happened to be at the jail to take a class.When Karpuzi pulled on the handle, Deputy Brunner stepped out of the vehicle, where she and another deputy detained him.Karpuzi told the deputies he saw a vehicle with the engine running and did not realize anyone was in it.He was arrested for attempted auto theft and returned to the jail. A federal judge is demanding answers after the U.S. Education Department rejected 94% of claims for student loan forgiveness it had agreed to process after being sued over delays. U.S. District Judge William Alsup in California scrapped the settlement this week and is considering barring the agency from denying claims until the case is decided. Judge Alsup said the department has been denying claims using template letters that are “alarmingly curt.”He said that although Education Secretary Betsy DeVos blamed the backlog on the hard work that goes into processing claims, she has now “charged out of the gate, issuing perfunctory denial notices utterly devoid of meaningful explanation at a blistering pace.”The dispute stems from a 2019 lawsuit brought by 160,000 borrowers who say the Education Department illegally stalled their claims for loan relief. The students claim they were defrauded by their schools. The Education Department says many claims were submitted for ineligible programs or failed to make a case for loan relief.In a proposed settlement in April, the Education Department agreed to process the backlog of claims within 18 months.
