BUCHAREST, May 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said here Monday that China and Romania share the same task of opening up a new era in their all-round partnership of friendship and cooperation.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political consultative body, delivered a speech at a session of the Romanian Senate on Monday evening.     In his speech, Jia explained China's policy and concept of peaceful development and mutually beneficial, win-win cooperation with other countries. He emphasized the willingness to further deepen friendship between China and Romania and advance China's relations with Central and Eastern Europe in an all-round way. Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, delivers a speech at the Romanian Senate in Bucharest, Romania, May 5, 2008.     Jia was warmly welcomed by Romanian Senators as he entered the meeting hall at the Parliament Palace under the escort of President Nicolae Vacaroiu.     China and Romania enjoy a long-standing friendship. Romania is one of the first countries that recognized new China shortly after its founding. Since the two countries established diplomatic relations nearly 60 years ago, bilateral relations have been growing smoothly despite major changes in international situation and conditions in both countries. The two countries have been always supporting each other on international affairs and domestic development.     Over the past few years, China and Romania have maintained frequent exchange of visits by high-ranking officials. Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Romania in 2004, when the two countries lift their relations to an all-round partnership of friendship and cooperation.     "The true friendship and deep passion that the Romanian people cherish toward the Chinese people will always remain on the historical record of bilateral relations," Jia said in the speech.     In the speech entitled "continuing the past, opening up the future and jointly creating a better tomorrow of friendship and cooperation", Jia said the two peoples have become friends of all weathers and that China-Romania relations have become an example of international relations.     Jia put forward four proposals on further advancing bilateral links.     First, the two countries should enhance political trust. They should continue to respect and treat each other as equals, never interfere in each other's internal affairs and pay attention to each other's concern. They should maintain high-level contact and carry out even closer exchanges and cooperation between their governments, legislatures and political parties so as to lay a solid political foundation for sustained development of bilateral links.     Secondly, the two countries should expand trade and economic cooperation. They should expand trade and investment according to the principle of mutual complementarity, equality and mutual benefits. They should continue to give a full play to the role of their joint economic commission, encourage and support their companies to increase contact and explore new ways and methods of cooperation.     Thirdly, the two countries should deepen cultural and humanitarian exchanges. They should continue exchanges and cooperation in such fields as culture, science, technology, education, sports, public health and tourism so as to add new content to bilateral links. They should further expand people-to-people exchanges, exchanges among local authorities and young people so as to consolidate the foundation of China-Romania friendship and add vigor to the development of bilateral links.     Fourthly, the two countries should step up coordination and cooperation on international issues. They should join effort to build a fair, unbiased and rule-based multi-lateral system with the United Nations assuming the core role.     Jia said China-Romania friendship is deep-rooted and fruitful and will enjoy an even better future. He called for the people of the two countries to join hands in strengthening their traditional friendship and all-round cooperation.     Jia arrived in Bucharest Sunday for a four-day official goodwill visit to Romania. Romania is the first leg of his four-nation Europe tour, which will also take him to Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia.

BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China senior political advisors gathered here Wednesday, to learn about the country's economic situation and developments in the earthquake relief and reconstruction campaign.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, presided over the inaugural session of the second meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee.     Jia praised CPPCC members for their participation in the earthquake relief campaign.     The relief situation remained serious and the tasks were still very heavy, Jia said. The CPPCC was responsible and duty-bound to contribute to the relief and reconstruction work. Jia Qinglin (C), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), presides over the second session of the Standing Committe of the 11th CPPCC national committee in Beijing July 2, 2008.    He encouraged the senior advisors to speak their views at the meeting, to provide the Party Central Committee and the State Council with more valuable comments and proposals. Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang (C) speaks in the second session of the Standing Committe of the 11th national committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing July 2, 2008.Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, in a report on the economic situation, said China had experienced the most austere economic and social challenges.     China had maintained stable and relatively fast economic development, thanks to the timely decisions and arrangements by the Party Central Committee and the State Council, as well as the work by local Party committees and governments, said Zhang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.     The country would continue earthquake relief and reconstruction while firmly adhering to promoting economic and social development, so as to achieve social harmony and stability.     Zhang hailed the reform of state-owned enterprises in the past 30 years, and pledged to speed up the reform.     He said China had entered into a crucial stage in developing its social security system, which required increased investment to "allow everyone enjoy fundamental living security, while trying hard to reach the goal of enabling everyone to enjoy schooling, find paid jobs, get medical services, retire on a pension, and live in decent housing".     The meeting is scheduled to last for four days.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese have used this year's mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on Sunday, to get together with family and loved ones.     This year the Chinese government made the festival a three-day national holiday for the first time.     Railways and buses from Chengdu, capital in southwest China's Sichuan Province, carried 180,000 people to quake-battered cities in the province on the first day of the holiday on Saturday, according to the transport authority.     "The holiday gave us a break from work to go back home to see my parents in Shifang City, after it was hit by the earthquake in May," said a man surnamed Li, while waiting in a crowded bus terminal in Chengdu.     Radio broadcast at the terminal reported travel was difficult, because of repairs on the road or damage from the earthquake. Home-going passengers, many holding packages of mooncakes, stood waiting.     Li said the passengers shared a common understanding that the festival's tradition of family values made the trip home more meaningful, and people with painful memories of the disasters cherished such chance.     Elsewhere in the country, people preferred to share the holiday feeling at home or on short family trips to tourist spots, instead of going far for travel, according to travel agencies.     Leading Chinese travel services like China Travel Service and CCT Travel reported slack booking for Mid-Autumn travels.     A staffer at the CCT Travel's office in scenic Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China said that travel for the week-long National Day holiday in Oct. was booked up. However, the business in the Mid-Autumn holiday was sluggish. Spectators hold placards that read "Welcome" and "Happy Mid-Autumn Day" during a match at the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Court Sept. 14, 2008. People from around the world are gathering in Beijing and enjoying the Mid-Autumn Festival, a Chinese traditional festival for family reunions which falls on Sept. 14 this year. Liao Wei, manager of the Chongqing Office of China Travel Service, said that the company had planned in vain to open some new routes featuring the Mid-Autumn activities.     "We thought of something like a full-moon observing tour of scenic spots, but the market reaction to such ideas was bad," he said.     He said that after devastating disasters this year, Chinese people preferred a peaceful and consoling break such as family reunions over long-distance travels.     Folk experts held that the Mid-Autumn Festival is second only to the Spring Festival, or China's Lunar New Year, in conveying the core value of the Chinese nation -- family values. A woman takes pictures as her child looks at chrysanthemum at the Shangzhi Park in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, Sept. 14, 2008This was why some law makers like Fan Yi, rector of the Foreign Languages College of Ningbo University in east China's Zhejiang Province, proposed to turn the festival into a national holiday last year.     "The Mid-Autumn holiday has the power to ease the home-bound travel spree in the Spring Festival, and help revive traditional values in the modern time," he said.     The festival tradition reminds people living far away from their native lands for better education conditions or better-paid jobs to go back to their family roots, he said.     The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, falls on the 15th day of August on the lunar calendar. It is celebrated in many Asian countries.
