SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Researchers are deploying a specially-trained canine to help search for koalas in Australia affected by the country's wildfires. The San Diego Zoo-backed team is using "Smudge," a dog trained to follow the scent of koalas, to locate the animals who have survived Australia's devastating fires in the Blue Mountains.“We don’t know how much wildlife is left in the wake of these fires,” said Kellie Leigh, a San Diego Zoo Global-supported researcher. “In many places, the fire burned so hot that it even melted metal road signs, we don’t expect to find survivors there. However, we are getting reports of koalas turning up in new locations; they are on the move due to the fires. There are likely to be unburnt patches of native habitat that would provide refuges for koalas and a range of other threatened species."Smudge is just one of the many dogs being used to sniff out koalas in the wake of the country's fires that have decimated the wildlife population. According to CNN, the dogs are able to smell koalas and their droppings, and identify where live koalas may be located among the burnt ruins of bush land.RELATED:Here's how you can help the victims of the Australian wildfiresSan Diego Zoo Global supports koala recovery amid devastating Australia wildfiresNorth County woman crochets pouches for injured Australian animalsAs Smudge and his handler, Kim, make their way through the region, they'll assess how many koalas have survived and what aid is needed to help the population recover. The area is of the utmost importance for koalas since it contains the most genetically diverse population of the animals in the world. About 2.5 million acres of the region have been affected by the fires.“We need to find out where koalas might have survived, and work out how many we have left—to guide search and rescue efforts, and also to plan for helping koala populations to recover,” Leigh added. “We know that wildlife detection dogs out perform humans when it comes to finding wildlife that can be hard to see, like koalas up in the tree canopy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County announced Wednesday if the county continues to hit state triggers with the spread of the coronavirus, museums, zoos and aquariums could be on the long list of closures Monday. The measures apply to any indoor activities.Balboa Park just reopened the Air and Space Museum two weeks ago, after everything closed down in March due to the pandemic."We want to make sure people come back to the park, it is the cultural heart of San Diego," Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Peter Comiskey said.Comiskey said this weekend more of our favorite museums are set to open. Friday the Science Center, the Veterans Museum, the Natural History Museum and the International Gift Shop are set to reopen, with three more museums opening Saturday July 4.The possibility those openings could be short-lived is something Comiskey says they're ready for."We're certainly hoping all the people of San Diego County are really able to pull together and make sure the infection rate and the case load and all these lovely metrics, these important metrics can be contained and can be controlled," he said hopefully.Comiskey said if they have to close Monday after putting so many precautions and time in to ensure the park is safe, they will.Looking to the future, he said they're brainstorming how to bring in money to help these cherished icons survive."I think as time goes on we need to look at what fund-raising is possible, I think we need to look with those organizations that rely on revenue through the gate." He said they will have conversations in the near future on supplementing the organizations' lost income. 1666

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a door-to-door solicitor who has prompted a string of complaints about threatening outbursts and who was seen on video taking swings at a woman in Pacific Beach.Corey Lamont Terry, 45, is wanted on felony charges of making criminal threats and attempted burglary, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. A warrant for his arrest was issued earlier this month, according to the Sheriff’s Department website.Police have been investigating Terry since at least early November, after “several” people complained about Terry’s aggressive language while soliciting money door-to-door, according to SDPD Lt. Shawn Takeuchi.Takeuchi urged the public to call their local police agency if they spot Terry, who is about 6 feet tall and weighs roughly 220 pounds. He said residents should not approach him based on his past behavior.Terry has canvassed neighborhoods in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach in recent weeks, claiming he is raising money for charity. But several people told 10News he becomes aggressive when his requests for funds are denied. In one case, Sarah Jarzabek said Terry threatened to kill her after she declined his requests for money.VIDEO: Woman records confrontation with man claiming to be charity worker"He chases me across the street, screaming that he's going to kill me," Jarzabek told 10News last month. She recorded video of a man police identified as Terry lunging and swinging at her Nov. 2."Scared to death, honestly," she said.10News obtained video of San Diego police detaining Terry Nov. 3. He was questioned and let go at the time. The warrant for his arrest was issued Dec. 6.RELATED: Police question solicitor seen swinging at Pacific Beach woman“It’s a little bit concerning he’s still out there,” said John Christenson, an Ocean Beach resident who said he encountered the then-unidentified solicitor at his home Oct. 16.“Basically said that he did want to knock me out, was getting in my face, calling me all kinds of names,” Christenson recounted. “Finally he did leave but not before spitting in my face.”Mark Brown, who lives about a half mile away, said he also encountered the confrontational solicitor.“He took a couple steps towards me, but he didn’t swing on me. Just cussing me out,” Brown said. Brown said the man told him something chilling. “‘Hope you die tonight.’ That was his quote.” 2441
