KYONGJU, South Korea, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met South Korean Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Kim Kwanyong here Friday.     Xi said China and South Korea, with a long history of friendship, have witnessed strong growth in their relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, and the two countries had set up a strategic and cooperative partnership.     Xi said he met and reached broad consensus with South Korean leaders during the past two days, and made extensive communications with South Korean people from all walks of life. BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday pledged to increase cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).     Wen told visiting UNDP Administrator Helen Clark that the Chinese government applauded the UNDP's assistance and support.     Hailing the UNDP's efforts in global development and poverty reduction, Wen spoke highly of the UNDP's positive role in the progress toward achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).     Clark expressed her appreciation for China's achievements in its social and economic development, hoping to work with the country to expand cooperation to jointly cope with challenges.     Clark was here on a visit at the invitation of the Ministry of Commerce of China.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- China-U.S. relationship that by large was entering a period where our focus would be more and more on global issues, said U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman on Friday.     Huntsman made the remarks at the Forum for America/China Exchange at Stanford (FACES) in Peking University, a top university in China.     "Obama arrived and found what he had hoped for," he said relating to the U.S. President's just concluded China visit after reviewing the bilateral link chronicle.     U.S. and China could strengthen cooperation in areas including military, people to people exchanges, climate change, clean energy and economic crisis, Huntsman told the delegates attending the forum.     He said the U.S.-China relationship was so "large and complicated" that managers of the relations should "take the areas of commonality" and "realize and speak open" about the disagreements.     Huntsman, who once lived in Taiwan and could speak Chinese called Chinese the "21st century language", saying diplomacy is ineffective without "investing a generation of professionals willing to invest their careers in turn in language, culture, regional studies."     FACES, a forum held in Beijing from Nov.15-20, gathered more than forty students from China and the U.S to discuss political, social, economic and cultural issues.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States will more vigorously promote cultural exchanges between the two nations and their people, and send more students to each other's country to study, a joint statement said here on Tuesday.     "The two sides noted the importance of people-to-people and cultural exchanges in fostering closer China-U.S. bilateral relations and therefore agreed in principle to establish a new bilateral mechanism to facilitate these exchanges," the statement said.     In recent years, the number of students studying in each other's country keeps rising. Currently there are nearly 100,000 Chinese students studying in the United States.     "The U.S. will receive more Chinese students and facilitate visa issuance for them," the statement said.     In China, there are about 20,000 American students studying. The United States will launch a new initiative to encourage more American students to study in China. "Over the coming four years, the U.S. will send 100,000 students to China, and the Chinese side welcomed this decision," it said.     China and the U.S. agreed to expedite negotiations to renew in 2010 a cultural exchange accord, and jointly hold the Second China-U.S. Cultural Forum in the United States at an appropriate time, the statement added. 

ROME, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's experience in eradicating hunger can be learned by other developing countries, the president of the UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) said on Tuesday.     Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Summit on Food Security, Kanayo Nwanze said China has done a lot both in increasing national funds for agriculture and in supporting other developing countries through strategic rural investments.     "I have seen firsthand progress," he said. "China was able in 30 years, from 1978 to 2007, to reduce rural poverty from 30 percent to 1.6 percent through massive investments in rural development and rural areas, focusing on women, right policies andl and access."     For Nwanze China can be a role-model for other developing countries.     "Through her own experience China is able to collaborate with others in bringing its knowledge and technology to other parts of the world," he said.     However, "it is then the recipient country's responsibility to ensure that these experiences are properly used," he added.     "China's partnership with developing countries, in particular Africa, is able to assist these countries but it is imperative that the developing countries have themselves the right policies to ensure that the investments reach the rural population," Nwanze said.
