With the talk of a possible COVID-19 vaccine on the way, some wonder if people who’ve recovered from COVID-19 should still get the vaccine.Months after his COVID-19 diagnosis, Robert Marrero’s road to recovery isn’t over. WFTS shared his story when he was released from the hospital in May.“Much better in the sense where I don’t have to struggle talking, but I’m still having difficulty with the brain fog. I’m still having problems with my walking, and the pain from my waist down to my toes,” said Marrero. “It’s very, very slow progress. It’s almost, I guess, [been] nine months already.”USF Health professor Dr. Marissa Levine explained that if you’ve already had COVID-19, the general recommendation they expect will be that you should get a COVID-19 vaccine when it’s approved and available.“Remember that what we’re looking at is an experimental authorization, that there’s a lot more to learn about this vaccine, so we don’t really know a lot about immunity yet, even for people who’ve had COVID, how long does that immunity last, let alone the immunity from the vaccine,” said Dr. Levine.Levine points to precedent, reminding people that vaccines are recommended for those who’ve had certain diseases before, like shingles. While it's believed to be rare, Levine says there is a potential risk of COVID-19 reinfection.“We know that you have immunity for some period of time,” said Levine. “It could be months, it could be longer, and like many other diseases, immunity duration really varies a lot by individuals.”Earlier this week, a CDC advisory committee voted to recommend both health care workers and long-term care facility residents be the first to get a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. Levine says it’s important to keep an eye out for official recommendations for COVID-19 survivors, too.For long-haulers, the people who have lingering COVID-19 symptoms, Dr. Levine suggests people check in with their doctor first. But Marrero says if his doctor gives him the green light, he’ll sign right up.“Just try to be safe. (CNS) - A wind-driven brush fire that broke out on the west end of Corona in Riverside County and quickly spread into Orange County -- threatening homes in Yorba Linda and blackening 15,200 acres -- was 0% contained Tuesday.Initially called the Green Fire and later renamed the Blue Ridge Fire, the blaze was reported at 12:55 p.m. Monday adjacent to the Green River Golf Club, just off of Green River Road and the Riverside (91) Freeway, according to the Corona Fire Department.Ten homes were damaged in the blaze, but the location and extent of damage were not immediately available, according to the Orange County Fire Authority, which added that more than 1,000 firefighters were battling the blaze.Evacuations have been ordered in 5,958 homes in Chino Hills and 2,500 homes in Yorba Linda. In Brea, 276 homes were ordered evacuated, 680 homes voluntarily evacuated and no homes were damaged there, officials said.Unlike most of the day Monday, firefighters on the ground were expected to get help from helicopter water drops on Tuesday as the intense winds have lessened, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Diane Bailey said a misunderstanding led to her grandson having his lunch taken away in front of his classmates.Jefferson Sharpnack turned 9 years old on Tuesday and said what happened in the lunchroom made it his worst birthday ever.“I got my cheesy breadsticks and put in my number,” Jefferson said, “And when I was going to check out, the lunch lady didn’t say anything, took away my cheesy breadsticks and sauce, put them over there, and took out bread on cheese from the fridge and put it on my tray.”Jefferson came home from school on Friday, Aug. 30 with a note stating he owed for his lunch account.His grandmother said she called the school first thing the following week to straighten things out. She thought her grandson was now in good standing with the school.Jefferson and his two brothers moved to Ohio last month to live with their grandmother. The children are supposed to be enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program.Bailey said she was told by administration there that she could write a check for her grandson’s lunch balance until the free and reduced lunch registration paperwork was processed.However, on Tuesday, Jefferson came home from school and declared it was the worst birthday ever and told his grandmother what happened at lunch.“In my mind, he didn’t owe anything. I owed the money, the parents, the school district,” Bailey said. “And my other question is, if they take the food off of your tray, they have to throw it away. You would take the food off a tray and you can’t reserve it? You’re going to throw it away and not feed the child?
