As parts of Australia continue to burn, many people are being forced to evacuate. In times like this, where many are seeking ways out, some first responders are looking for ways in and actually running toward the chaos.“It’s bad,” said Cody Peel, a fire director with the U.S. Forest Service. “We’re looking at over 26 million acres have burned.”Peel is part of a team of nine federal firefighters going to Australia to join in and help on the frontlines of the bushfires.“It’s what we do,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if the fire is on our soil or in our neighbors. The Australians have come over to the U.S. in recent years to help us when we had a time of need. So, we’re just repaying that debt.”Repaying by helping relieve exhausted crews working down under. This comes after crews from Australia and New Zealand helped with wildfires in Northern California in 2018.Peel and his team are flying into Melbourne where they’ll be met and briefed on fires that have been burning for months, leaving dozens dead, thousands of homes destroyed, millions of acres of burned and more than a billion animals dead. “I’m just one of many that’s willing to run towards the help and offer it any way we can,” Peel said.Over the past few months, more than a hundred federal firefighters from American agencies have gone to Australia to help with the firefighting efforts. And with the dry season starting up, the worsening weather conditions are creating even more challenges.“We’re looking at triple digits daily. They’re pushing 110-115 degrees. It’s incredibly dry,” Peel said. “They’re going through a drought so being able to find water to use to help suppress the fires is going to be a challenge.”Peel and his crew will be gone up to 35 days but say they’re in it for the long haul.“I’m no meteorologist, I’m no climate expert, but everything is pointing this is going to be a long, drawn-out fight,” he said.Responding to an international call for help and running toward the danger while others are looking to leave. 2026

ANGOLA, Ind. – China is the number one country for international adoption. But right now, more than 150 million people there are under a coronavirus lockdown, flights grounded, travel advisories in place. It has left thousands of orphan children and adoptive families in limbo. Last summer, Robin and Walt Huston decided they wanted to share their lake house home with a child in need.“We just decided to add to our family,” said Robin Huston. “We think we have enough to give to another child.”The Hustons are pre-approved to adopt and have been working with an international agency that specializes in placing children with hearing loss or deafness.Walt Huston’s parents and grandparents were deaf. “My first language was sign language,” said Walt. “And then I met Robin. She knew sign and then we both decided we wanted a deaf child.”The child they selected is 13-year-old Zhou Ji. Born hearing impaired, he’s waited his entire life for someone to choose him. “[They] showed us some pictures of him and our hearts just melted,” said Walt. “And we wanted him from that point on.”But the eruption of the coronavirus has brought dozens of adoptions like theirs to a crushing halt. Zhou Ji is living in an orphanage under lockdown in Hubei province, the epicenter of the Wuhan virus outbreak. “Yes. It’s very scary,” said the Hustons.Pamela Neail Thomas is the china program director for Hand-in-Hand International Adoptions and is handling the Hustons’ case. “The children in the orphanages are being kept inside the compounds and their caregivers are being asked to stay with them,” said Thomas. “So, no one is leaving.” Along with being paralyzed by the outbreak, the Hustons are also racing against time. “He is 13. He's going to be 14 in October,” said Robin. “So, he will be aging out.”If that happens, there is very little if any recourse.“If he gets to his 14th birthday he become ineligible for adoption under Chinese law,” explained Thomas. The Indiana couple says they remain hopeful the virus will be contained before it’s too late. “I just hope that this virus has subsided enough that we're able to travel and stay healthy and that he stays healthy.” 2174

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana police officer who crashed a speeding sports car while off duty will face no criminal charges in the death of a child.Prosecutors cleared Christopher Manuel of negligent homicide, even though investigators say he was driving an orange Corvette at 94 mph (151 kph) before crashing into an SUV, killing a child and injuring others in 2017.The East Baton Rouge District Attorney said Tuesday that his office didn't bring charges because the child's mother also contributed to the death, by putting the infant in a child seat that wasn't properly belted in.The Advocate reports that investigators determined Manuel was going twice the speed limit, and that while both Manuel and SUV driver had green lights, Manuel's speed made it impossible for the SUV to yield.Prosecutors also considered a negligent homicide charge against Brittany Stephens, whose child was killed, because they said she had placed the child in an unrestrained car seat atop the SUV's center console.District Attorney Hillar Moore III said his office decided not to charge either driver because prosecutors "couldn't really determine" who was responsible "based on the facts of the case and what the law requires."Manuel still works as a Baton Rouge Police officer, assigned to desk duty. He's awaiting a resolution in the department's internal affairs process.Police initially filed citations against occupants of the SUV, saying it was overcrowded, nobody was wearing seatbelts and the driver didn't have a license. Those citations were allowed to expire. A misdemeanor speeding count against Manuel also expired without action. Moore said prosecuting Manuel for speeding would have meant forfeiting the negligent homicide charge because of double jeopardy laws at the time. However, prosecutors could have cited Manuel for speeding after dropping the more serious charge, and declined to do so.Stephens' attorney said the least Moore's office could have done is issue a speeding ticket. He said failing to file the charge "almost" makes it appear as if Manuel is "above the law."Manuel and Stephens have both filed civil suits accusing the other of causing the crash, the newspaper reported.Stephens' lawsuit says her mother suffered serious injuries, and three other children in the car, ages 7, 9 and 15, were hospitalized for months. It says the 15-year-old remains in a wheelchair.Manuel's attorney said Wednesday that the prosecutors' decision was appropriate. He said the case is more suited to civil court. 2531

An intense and sprawling winter storm is expected to develop starting Tuesday across the Great Plains, delivering hurricane-force wind gusts, severe rain, heavy snow and floods for days across a wide swath of the central United States. The storm is forecast to rapidly intensify overnight east of the Colorado Rockies. It will then trek slowly northeast through Thursday, delivering a variety of extreme weather from New Mexico to the Midwest.Centered in Kansas as it hits its midweek peak, gusts as strong as 100 mph are possible as the storm toys with a state record low for sea level pressure, which is one indicator of storm strength.A white-out is expected in parts of the northern PlainsBlizzard and winter storm warnings are in place for portions of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota.Heavy snow is expected in portions of the Rockies and northern Plains, with a foot or more falling in many areas.Strong winds will bring white-out conditions through Wednesday evening to places including western Nebraska and northeast Colorado. Blowing snow will make travel treacherous or impossible during these times.Snow should taper off by midday Thursday, but strong winds will persist through the evening.Hurricane-like gusts may whip the southern PlainsThunderstorms overnight Tuesday across portions of the southern Plains will make way on Wednesday for sustained winds of 35 to 45 mph, akin to the strength of a low-end tropical storm. The National Weather Service has issued high wind watches for more than 8 million people.Even stronger wind gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning across Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma, CNN meteorologist Monica Garrett said. Some areas could see gusts as strong as 100 mph, which is equivalent to the wind speed of a Category 2 hurricane.Widespread power outages will be a significant concern.Soaking rains and snowmelt could flood the MidwestParts of the Midwest on Wednesday are expected to see heavy rains, a big worry after recent record-setting snowfall.Flood watches have been issued across the Midwest and Great Plains amid concerns that heavy rains will melt snowpack and trigger significant flooding. Flash flooding is possible if ice jams clog rivers and streams, the weather service notes.Rain is predicted to begin turning to snow in these areas by Wednesday evening.More severe storms are due to hit the SouthFarther south, strong winds, large hail and a few tornadoes are possible overnight Tuesday from southeastern New Mexico to western Texas. As the system pushes east, another round of early spring storms is due to take shape. The primary concern is damaging winds, and brief tornado activity is possible.Portions of Louisiana and Arkansas face a slight risk for severe weather Wednesday, the Storm Prediction Center said. The risk shifts Thursday into Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama. 2917
