SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The United State Marine Corps is ordering the removal of the Confederate battle flag from public display and in work spaces aboard its installations, such as Camp Pendleton.The announcement was made late Friday night amid fiery protests across the country against racism and police killings."Today, the Marine Corps released guidance on the removal of public displays of the Confederate battle flag," read a post on USMC's official Twitter account.The order bans all depictions of the Confederate battle flag, including clothing, posters, mugs, bumper stickers, and the flag itself."Our history as a nation, and events like the violence in Charlottesville in 2017, highlight the divisiveness the use of the Confederate battle flag has had on our society," said USMC. "This presents a threat to our core values, unit cohesion, security, and good order and discipline."In 2017, white nationalists groups rallied against the proposed removal of a statue of Confederate soldier Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville. It was one of several controversial monuments targeted for removal following a massacre two years earlier in which a white supremacist gunned down nine black church members in Charleston. The rally saw violent clashes, including the death of a 32-year-old woman who was killed when a car rammed into a group of counter-protesters.USMC allows for the flag to be displayed in works of art, educational or historical displays depicting a Civil War battle where the flag is present but not the main focus of the work. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, thousands of letters, pictures, and cards from local groups were sent to veterans who were not able to visit memorials in their honor this year due to the pandemic.Honor Flight San Diego usually takes veterans to visit memorials in Washington D.C. built in their honor. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that flight won't take to the sky again until May 2021.Organizers had collected 3,000 letters and cards from local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, and the national organization, Solider Angels, for previously scheduled flights.In San Diego, 120 San Diego County WWII and Korean War veterans were sent care packages on Friday. Two of those packages were hand-delivered to local veterans by Honor Flight San Diego Founder Dave Smith and Chairman Julie Brightwell.Honor Flight is a trip at no cost to veterans and has taken more than 1,400 WWII and Korean War veterans in San Diego across the country to visit war memorials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The officer who saved two twin toddlers and their dad after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs was recognized for his heroic efforts this week.San Diego Police K9 officer Jonathan Wiese was awarded the Medal of Valor and Heroic Act award from the California Surf Lifesaving Association and United States Lifesaving Association for his efforts to save the three people on June 13.SDPD received a call about a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge. Police tracked the man's phone to Sunset Cliffs where an SDPD lieutenant watched him drive off the cliff at a high rate of speed just after 5 a.m.RELATED: Officer rescues toddlers after father drives off Sunset CliffsPolice: Man drives off Sunset Cliffs with twin daughters in truckWiese used a 100-foot long dog tether to rappel down the cliff to the truck, which had landed upside down in the water on top of a rock. Wiese was able to get the man and the two girls from the car to the shore."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he told ABC 10News in June. "And by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."The officer also performed rescue breathing on one of the girls who was limp after being pulled from the wreck.Wiese is the same officer who helped apprehend the suspected Poway synagogue shooter in April 2019. He was on his way to meet his family for lunch on Apr. 27 when he heard a call of shots fired and immediately responded to the area."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting the toddlers. 2058
