BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Property prices in 70 major cities rose 9.3 percent in August year on year but were unchanged on a month-on-month basis from July, China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Friday.The year-on-year growth rate was one percentage point lower than the year-on-year growth rate in July, a statement on the NBS website said Friday.The year-on-year growth rate was the slowest in the past eight months this year.On a year-on-year basis, China's home prices rose 7.8 percent in December 2009, 9.8 percent in January 2010, 10.7 percent in February, 11.7 percent in March, 12.8 in April, 12.4 percent in May, 11.4 percent in June and 10.3 percent in JulyNew home prices rose 11.7 percent year on year in August, down 1.2 percentage points from July. New home prices in August were unchanged from July, too.Prices of second-hand homes rose 6.2 percent year on year in August, down 0.5 percentage points from July. Prices of second-hand homes in August increased on a month-on-month basis, up 0.1 percent from July.The Chinese government took measures in April to cool soaring home prices, including curbing lending to developers, limiting loans for third-home purchases and requiring higher down-payments for second-home purchases.

BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The body of Peng Chong, a senior Chinese legislator and political advisor, was cremated at Beijing's Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery on Wednesday.President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and state and Party leaders Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and He Guoqiang bid a final farewell to Peng Chong.Peng, who had served as vice chairman of China's top legislature and the top political advisory body, died of illness in Beijing on Oct. 18 at an age of 96.Peng was also a member of the Political Bureau of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the fifth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and vice chairman of the standing committees of the fifth, sixth and seventh National People's Congresses.He was described in an official statement as a "loyal Communist fighter," "proletarian revolutionist" and "outstanding leader of the CPC's political work and the construction of China's socialist legal system."

BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature on Saturday approved an amendment to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region regarding the method of selecting Hong Kong's Chief Executive.The amendment to Annexes I to the Basic Law was approved at the bimonthly meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, which ended Saturday.The NPC Standing Committee approved an examination report on an amendment to Annexes II of the Basic Law concerning the formation of the city's Legislative Council and agreed to file it on the record.The NPC Standing Committee's concluding meeting was presided over by Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.The two amendments would take effect after the legislature's approval, Wu said.Wu said the two amendments had embodied the common opinions among the Hong Kong communities, gone through due procedures in the laws and was in accordance with interpretations and decisions of the NPC Standing Committee.The two amendments would help to maintain and promote the long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong, Wu said.The NPC Standing Committee members had called for unswervingly following the principle of "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law, to push forward a gradual promotion of Hong Kong's political system, Wu said.Legislators at the session also adopted the People's Mediation Law and the amendment to the Law on Officers in Reserve Forces.Further, President Hu Jintao signed decrees to publish the new Law, which will come into effect in 2011, and the amendment to the Law on Officers in Reserve Forces, which will be implemented after its being published.The legislature also ratified the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.During his speech at the concluding meeting, Wu also said the situation of China's economy was in a crucial stage from recovery to a steady growth.However, he noted that the work to maintain satisfactory growth was still an arduous job.Wu also said he appreciated the reports on cleaner production inspection and grain safety work, which were presented during the session.The NPC Standing Committee also appointed Chen Jianguo and Shi Zongyuan as vice chairmen of two special committees under the NPC.

HANOI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A trade fair was held in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi on Saturday with participation of companies from Vietnam and China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.At the fair, more than 100 companies from China's Guangxi brought here nearly 200 projects in various sectors including resources development, agriculture products processing, agricultural machinery production, sugar production and high technology.Ma Biao, chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region said at the fair that Guangxi and Vietnam have seen strengthened trade and economic links in recent years.Vietnam has been Guangxi's largest trade partner for eleven years, said Ma. URUMQI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for breakthroughs in the development of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during his five-day inspection tour there.Breakthroughs should be achieved in efforts to resettle herdsmen, promote bilingual and vocational education, utilize natural resources, and develop industrial parks, said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.Zhou told local officials to thoroughly carry out policies set by the central government to develop Xinjiang and strive for the improvement of well-being for the locals.Zhou traveled across the sprawling Xinjiang, about one sixth of China's territory, from Sept. 19 to 24. He visited rural households, schools, farms, a crude oil pipeline station at China-Kazakstan border, industrial zones, and army camps.
