SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego nonprofit is hoping to tackle the homeless crisis with a creative solution.The nonprofit, Amikas, envisions a San Diego where every woman and child has a safe place to live in.They hope to build emergency sleeping cabins, which could temporarily house homeless women and children as they look for a permanent place to live. "They're small, they're immediate, they go up in a matter of days, and so we can house a lot of people very quickly with this solution," said Shanna Welsh-Levin, President of Amikas.Designed by San Diego-based Treecycling, the homes are inexpensive and can be built within 24 hours. The cabins are mobile, able to be dismantled within a few hours. "We built these things like houses so they feel like homes," said Gabriel Stafford, with Treecyling. The house built this week is on display at the Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon. The ultimate goal would be to run a two-year pilot program, creating an emergency cabin village to test the idea. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An appeals court Friday granted a stay against a San Diego judge's recent ruling allowing strip clubs and restaurants to reopen despite the state's coronavirus restrictions.The decision by the Fourth District Court of Appeals, District One, freezes an earlier ruling, forcing restaurants to again only offer takeout and delivery service, per California's recent health order. Any opposition to the state's filing must be submitted by noon Wednesday.Lawyers for the state argued against the Superior Court ruling, saying it was overreach since no restaurants were parties in the suit filed by two strip club operators.RELATED: San Diego County to appeal ruling on strip clubs, restaurants amid health ordersCounty Supervisor Jim Desmond said in a statement the decision one day after some restaurants reopened was "tragic." "Today's decision to close restaurants one day after they were allowed to open is tragic for San Diego's workforce. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An hours-long SWAT standoff involving a domestic violence suspect in Point Loma came to an end Thursday night. Police were called to the 2200 block of Caminito Pescado around 4:45 p.m. after receiving a call from a neighbor. Police say a woman who lives in the home ran to the neighbor’s house reporting that she and her 71-year-old husband got into a fight. Police and SWAT responded and found the man on the second floor balcony of the condo. After trying to get the 71-year-old down from the balcony, police say he ran inside before a gunshot could be heard coming from the home. Neighbor Jenny Taylor spoke with 10News on FaceTime, saying she could see officers lined up with their weapons drawn from her patio. She said she was ready for the worst, "let me move it so we can at least duck down really quick and hit the floor and run inside the house, so we left the screen door open and moved all the chairs out of the way."It was hours before police and SWAT packed up.Authorities later found the man dead inside. According to police, records show authorities had never been previously called to the home. An investigation into the incident is currently underway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Ocean Beach man says he was home when two burglars in a white Mercedes-Benz were raiding his garage and stealing his vehicle.      Along Lotus Street last week around 1:30 in the afternoon, Evan Montoya was in his upstairs bedroom and never heard a thing.  But when he later went down to the garage, he noticed some things were out of place and his car keys were gone.  Outside, the car belonging to Montoya - an Uber and Lyft driver - was nowhere to be found."My heart sank into the pit of my stomach.  That's my livelihood.  They took my entire world when they took my car," said Montoya.But that was hardly the entire loss.  Montoya believes the intruders slipped under the garage door - left open because the garage gets hot - before grabbing anything electric."Basically they went on a shopping spree through our garage and took whatever they wanted," said Montoya.  After the break-in, a neighbor handed him surveillance video showing a white Mercedes sedan stopping in the alley in front of the garage.  In the video, a man and a woman are seen going back and forth to their garage, before they finally drive off."Makes you feel unsafe in your home, which is the one place you're supposed to feel safe," said Montoya.Montoya's car was found abandoned a few days later.  Meanwhile, the video has been shared by neighbors across social media.  Some seven other neighbors have reported similar, recent break-ins. "People going through alleys stealing from houses," said Montoya.If you have any information on the cases, call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1659
