The only thing that scares salon owner Shelly Albro more than the empty chairs inside her Portsmouth, New Hampshire barbershop is the silence that has consumed this place recently.Having lost 30 percent of her business because of COVID-19, Albro found herself in the same position as thousands of other small business owners across the country, desperate for new streams of revenue, while at the same time, having to keep her customers and staff safe.“I just knew that if I didn’t get creative we weren’t going to make any money,” she said. “Business was down.”Albro owns Gents Barbershop, which she recently opened. On a particularly depressing day during the shutdown, she had been searching through old photos when she stumbled upon an old black and white picture from the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. A few barbers stood wearing masks as they cut clients' hair, but instead of cutting hair inside a building, the barbers were standing out on the sidewalk in front of their store. She had found her solution.“When I saw this picture I was like, ‘I gotta do this outside!’ For those who are like me who are nervous to go inside,” she said.Unsure of how the idea would go over with customers, Albro first started cutting hair outside on her days off. Her schedule quickly booked up, as this upbeat stylist with a slight New England accent realized she’d struck a chord with her customers who were still too nervous to get their haircut inside a barbershop during COVID-19.And for Albro, who suffers from an autoimmune disease herself, the whole thing is personal.“There are a lot of people who have anxiety about coming inside a building. It doesn’t matter how much we clean or sanitize; they’re feeling anxious about coming inside,” she said. “Because I’m high risk, I get why people are reluctant.”Gents Barbershop isn't alone in moving hair cutting services outside. Back in July, California moved all salons outdoors to deal with a sudden spike in cases.Beth Milito with the National Federation of Independent Businesses is telling small business owners to follow Albro’s lead.“It’s been much more challenging than people anticipated back in March,” Milito explained. As small business owners continue to navigate an economic recession, Milito says that creativity and ingenuity are keys to a successful rebound, especially when more than 100,000 small businesses have already closed since March.“Looking at this as a long-term investment, something you can see into the future,” she added. As for Albro, she knows that like a good haircut this trend may fade away, but for now, she’s just trying to make a much deeper impression.“I just want to help,” she said. 2669

The mayor of a California town says police are investigating after video widely shared on social media shows a woman making racist remarks about a Filipino American woman who was exercising in a local park.Patrick Furey, the mayor of Torrence, California, says the city is aware of the viral video."All visitors to our open spaces should always feel safe and free to exercise while practicing social distancing without conflict," he said, according to The Los Angeles Times. "Conduct like that displayed on the video cannot be tolerated."KABC-TV in Los Angeles adds that Furey said an investigation has been opened by police. The video was originally posted by Rachel Tennell on Twitter (@rmtennell). Tennell says the video shows her friend, who she later identified as "Sherry," being accosted by a white woman as she exercised in Torrence's Wilson Park."The next time you talk to me like that, you're going to get your a** kicked by my family. They're going to f*** you up," the woman yells as Sherry stretches."Go back to whatever f***ing Asian country you belong in," the woman later said.Tennell said that Sherry no longer feels safe working out in the park because of the incident.Later on, in her Twitter thread, Tennell shared a statement by Sherry."I never imagined my story would reach so many people, and I am happy to shed some light on the work that needs to be done in this country. As a Filipino American, I believe all people of color should be treated with humanity, dignity and respect," she wrote. "I stand in solidarity with all oppressed people who face discrimination and violence just because of their ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender-nonconformity and sexual orientation."Watch the viral video below.Warning: The video includes explicit and racist language. 1794

The mayor of Austin, Texas, has apologized after reports revealed that he delivered an address urging his constituents to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while he was vacationing in Mexico."I regret this travel," Austin Mayor Steve Adler, a Democrat, said in a statement, according to The Austin American-Statesman. "My fear is that this travel, even having happened during a safer period, could be used by some as justification for risky behavior. In hindsight, and even though it violated no order, it set a bad example for which I apologize."According to the American-Statesman and KVUE-TV in Austin, Adler took the trip after he hosted a small outdoor wedding ceremony for his daughter in early November. Both outlets report that there were about 20 guests at the wedding — more than the recommended guidelines of a limit of 10 per gathering that was in effect at the time.Following the ceremony, KVUE reports that Adler and eight family members boarded a private jet and traveled to Cabo San Lucas for a resort vacation. One day into that trip, on Nov. 9, Adler urged Austinites to stay at home."We need to stay home if you can," Adler said in that video, according to the American-Stateman. "This is not the time to relax. We are going to be looking really closely. ... We may have to close things down if we are not careful."Adler told the American-Statesman that he consulted with public health officials before hosting the wedding and that all 20 guests were required to undergo rapid COVID-19 tests before attending. He also said that masks were distributed during the reception guests "probably" did not wear them for the duration of the reception.KVUE adds that some of the guests traveled by plane to attend the wedding, including the Seattle-based wedding photographer.Adler isn't the only politician who has failed to heed his own warnings against travel. Last week, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, a Democrat, traveled by plane to Mississippi to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family, despite repeated requests to his constituents not to travel for the holiday. 2096

The nation’s air traffic control system is losing controllers faster than it can hire people, according to the Air Traffic Controllers union.“If we don't have enough controllers to open all the positions and we have to combine up positions we have to reduce the capacity,” said Paul Rinaldi, the union’s president. He says the effects of not enough controllers have affected flights in the past."We have seen some situations last summer where we didn't have enough controllers at the facility where airlines did cancel flights," he said. "Right now we're at a 30-year low of certified controllers in a system."In 2017, 1,848 controllers left the job due to retirements, promotions or other reasons, according to the FAA’s Controller staffing report released this year. The FAA hired 1,880 people to be new controllers last year. That’s a gain of 32 controllers. But of the number hired, the FAA lost 735 people who did not pass the required training academy.Only 1,145 passed, far fewer than the number of controllers who left the job last year."We'll keep trying to keep up with attrition and we haven't been able to do that," Rinaldi said.He says if the problem isn’t addressed differently than it currently is, we can expect to be inconvenienced in the future when we fly."You will have some delays on the ground maybe even holding in the air depending on what the staffing looks at looks like at that facility," Rinaldi said. 1435
