SALEM, Mass. (AP) — A lawsuit filed by the Satanic Temple alleges an advertising company unfairly refused to display billboards promoting a ritual offered by the group to help people bypass abortion rules in some states. The group, based in Salem, Massachusetts, announced Wednesday that it sued Lamar Advertising in Arkansas state court for alleged religious discrimination. The Louisiana-based company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Satanic Temple says Lamar refused to display eight billboards in Arkansas and Indiana promoting what the group calls its “religious abortion ritual.” The Satanic Temple describes the ritual as a “sacramental act that confirms the right of bodily autonomy.”By performing the ritual, the group says, people can claim a religious exemption from mandatory waiting periods, counseling, ultrasounds and other measures that some states require before an abortion can be performed. The group says it submitted five designs to Lamar to be displayed near crisis pregnancy centers. In one of the images, a bowl of cake batter is shown with the text, “not a cake,” next to an image of a sperm and egg with the text “not a baby.” It’s accompanied by text saying, “Our religious abortion ritual averts many state restrictions.”Lamar rejected the billboards and said their content was “misleading and offensive,” according to the suit. The Satanic Temple alleges that the rejection was based on religious discrimination. 1474

SAN DIEGO — Tony Ganaway took full advantage of the space in front of him. He had three tents set up in the parking lot of the College Area strip mall where he and his colleagues could deliver haircuts outside."It's on us as owners and entrepreneurs to sit here and find a way everyday," said Ganaway, who owns the Cutt'n Edge barber shop. 'Hearing the word 'no' is something you've got to get used to when you're trying to make it in life."Ganaway says the afternoon was busy as people lined up for his signature service. It was the first day operating under new state rules for haircuts to help stop the spread of the Coronavirus. The rules allowed hair stylists to operate outdoors, or under shaded coverings that allow normal airflow. The rules also restrict the kinds of services that can be conducted outdoors, including eliminating big money makers like coloring services. For some salons, that's a deal breaker and they'd rather just stay closed."It's business suicide for our industry," said Corinne Lam, who decided not to reopen Salotto Salon in Rancho Bernardo. "It's unsanitary, the elements are uncontrollable, people will be sweating under cutting capes, and it is just unfathomable."In a statement, the California Department of Consumer affairs stood by the new rules."The situation is fluid and the environment is constantly changing, but for now, personal care facilities that are on the statewide monitoring list must follow the Governor's directive not to operate services indoors," spokeswoman Cheri Gyuro said. Lam said regular haircuts make up just 15 percent of her business, and she spent ,000 making the inside of her salon safer. Meanwhile, she's exhausted all of the Paycheck Protection Program funds that helped her through the first shutdown, 1782

SAN DIEGO (AP and CNS) — A white Christmas was in store for parts of California with wet weather elsewhere in the state that could mean dangerous driving conditions and possible power outages."A storm system is coming and after about 10 p.m. tonight, we'll begin having scattered showers that will continue through the day on Christmas," NWS forecaster Samantha Connolly said of the San Diego impact. "The storm system will bring cooler temperatures through tomorrow, and snow above 5,000 feet."Connolly said temperatures will drop into the high 50s to 60s in most of San Diego on Christmas day. She said temperatures in the mountains are expected to dip into the 30s and 40s during the storm.RELATED: Check Your 10News Pinpoint Weather Forecast"We will have gusty winds as well through the day and night," Connolly said. "Wind gusts will be up to 30 mph along the coasts and in the inland valleys, and as much as 50 to 60 mph in the mountains and deserts."One-tenth to one-quarter of an inch of rain is expected along the coast and in the inland valleys and the deserts on Christmas. Half an inch to an inch of rain is expected in the mountains. The NWS forecaster said the storm will leave San Diego later in the day on Christmas. Wednesday, the day after the storm, is expected to be dry. But more light rain could be on the way."We have another potential storm system that could come in on Thursday and Friday," Connolly said. "We're expecting a little rain from that, but not much."The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory Monday for higher elevations in San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Ventura and Kern counties. The weather service said the fast-moving storm system was expected to move into Southern California late Monday, bringing up to 4 inches of snow to elevations above 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) including Big Bear, Wrightwood and the Grapevine area of Interstate 5.The system also was expected to bring gusty winds between 40 and 60 mph (64 to 97 kph) and a chance of rain at lower elevations. The conditions could create snowy and ice-covered roads with low visibility and strong cross winds. The California Department of Transportation said chains will be required in mountain areas. In Northern California, the weather service issued a flash flood watch for an area of Mendocino County that was charred by wildfires earlier this year. The warning was in effect from noon until 6 p.m. Monday. Motorists traveling along Highway 20 should be on alert for possible road flooding, rockslides and debris flows, it said. The fire in July blackened 717 square miles (1,857 square kilometers), much of it in Mendocino National Forest. The weather service also issued a coastal flood advisory in parts of the San Francisco Bay Area until 2 p.m. Monday because of higher than normal tides.Holiday travelers in parts of the Sierra Nevada could see up to 2 feet of snow in some mountain passes at elevations of about 6,000 feet. Forecasters say that by Tuesday, snow could fall at lower mountain elevations. 3042

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former San Diego firefighter pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.Justin Curtis Price, 36, formerly a fire engineer-paramedic who had been with the city public-safety agency for 10 years, was arrested last April for the Nov. 1, 2018, sexual encounter with a 17-year-old girl.Prosecutors said Price had known the teen since she was about 9 or 10 years old.RELATED:San Diego firefighter to stand trial for alleged rape of underage girlSan Diego Fire engineer charged with sexually assaulting teenPrice is slated to be sentenced April 24 to five years felony probation and could also face up to one year in jail, according to Deputy District Attorney Jessica Coto. The sentencing judge will decide how much jail time Price could serve and whether he will have to register as a sex offender.Preliminary hearing testimony from last fall indicated Price admitted to having sex with the teen about two weeks after her 17th birthday in text messages with the girl's mother.San Diego police Detective Jeremy Margolis testified that he interviewed the victim, who said Price told her not to tell anyone about what happened, and that it would be "our little secret." 1231

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Slide on your headset, sit back and be instantly transported to college basketball's biggest stage. That's the sensation you get with the NCAA March Madness Live VR, which is described as an "immersive virtual experience.""The idea is to really explain what it's like to be here in the arena and at the game,” said Intel Product Implementation Manager Nadia Banks. It's gives new meaning to the phrase "court-side."So far this season, 21 college basketball games have been broadcast on the device during the NCAA tournament.Fans can even select which camera angle they would like to watch from by choosing from one of the more than 20 different cameras throughout the arena. Banks said sometimes it takes a little push to get reluctant fans to try out the virtual reality, but once they do, it's easy to see why it's hard to put down the virtual goggles."People are a little skeptical at first when they put it on then they go ‘Whoa! That's cool,’” Banks said. 1004
