February 13, 2017:Abby and Libby were dropped off at the trail near Delphi’s scenic Monon High Bridge, an abandoned railroad bridge over Deer Creek. Hours later, when they failed to meet their ride home at that same location it would kick off a series of events that would forever change the tiny town of Delphi, Indiana. Despite having a video, audio and two sketches from potential witnesses in the area, investigators have yet to find the man responsible for their murders. "(We) thought we were going to get the clues that we needed and be done with this in four or five days," Indiana State Police (ISP) Detective Jerry Holeman told WRTV in 2019. "We realized that this is a totally different type of investigation.”But a killer is still out there. ISP Sgt. Kim Riley says investigators have interviewed over 1,000 people, including possible witnesses, suspects and anyone who may have information about suspicious activity on the day the girls went missing. To this day, he says between six and eight people work on Abby and Libby's case each day throughout the week. But despite all of the evidence released to the public, investigators have always been open about the fact that they are holding some of it close to their vests with the goal of having information that only the killer would know when they finally arrest him. Zachary Cruz, the younger brother of Parkland, Florida, school shooter Nikolas Cruz, was sentenced Thursday to six months of probation for trespassing at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School earlier this month.The younger Cruz was released Thursday afternoon from the Broward County Jail.He was initially jailed on a 0,000 bond, leading his attorney to argue he was being punished because of his older brother, who killed 17 people last month at the school in one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history.Under the terms of his probation, Zachary Cruz will wear a GPS monitor and must remain one mile away from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas campus. He is also forbidden from having any contact with victims or family members of the February 14 mass shooting.Cruz, 18, was arrested March 19 on a misdemeanor trespassing charge at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. After his arrest, the younger Cruz told police he wanted to "reflect on the school shooting and soak it in," according to an arrest report.Probation was reached as part of a plea deal in the case. Cruz, shackled and wearing a brown jumpsuit Thursday morning, pleaded no contest to trespassing.His attorney Joseph Kimok had earlier argued that the excessive bond showed Cruz was being punished for his brother's actions."He is being held because of who he is related to, not because of anything that he did," Kimok told Judge Kim Theresa Mollica.Police said he visited the campus at least three times since the school massacre.His attorney filed a motion for his client's release, calling his treatment immoral, reprehensible, unlawful and unconstitutional. in Highlands County.The Highlands County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a body found in a wooded area in Lake Placid, Florida, a little before Thursday afternoon. Deputies identified the deceased man as 45-year-old Melvin Olds Jr.Following the investigation, deputies noticed Olds suffered injuries that would come from an animal attack, believed to be from a pack of dogs. The medical examiner also responded to the scene and could not find any injuries other than the ones caused by the dogs. Autopsy results found more than 100 dog bites on the victim's body, the sheriff's office said on Friday. A final determination of what killed Olds will be made after toxicology results. A pack of dogs was later spotted in the area shortly after Olds' body was discovered. Deputies say six dogs have been captured in the area and their bite size matches wounds on Old's body. However, authorities say that alone is not enough to say for sure that they were the animals involved. DNA from the captured dogs will be compared to DNA collected from the wounds, deputies say. Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services officers have set traps in the area and Animal Services units have been patrolling the area looking for loose dogs who may have been involved in the attack."While we may have the dogs that were responsible for this horrible tragedy, we won’t know for sure for a while,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said. “I want to encourage residents of Highway Park and the surrounding area to be on the lookout for any loose dogs, especially those that seem aggressive.
