SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Applications are now being accepted for the CONNECT ALL @ the Jacobs Center Business Accelerator Program (CAJC).CAJC is the region's first low-to-moderate income and diversity-focused business accelerator program.The first CAJC group of 13 local startups included businesses in retail, technology, food, and health and beauty. The founders come from various ethnic backgrounds, including African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander.Entrepreneurs receive six months of free workspace, mentorship, and workshops - learning skills like how to access capital. Kelly Twichel is one of 13 entrepreneurs in CONNECT ALL's first cohort. Her woman-owned company Access Trax was born in a college classroom. "It's important because you want to level the playing field. Anybody has and can come up with a great idea."Twichel and the rest of the first CONNECT ALL cohort will finish their program in October. "Not having to give up equity in my company meant a lot to me because I wanted to grow this as organically as possible and really maintain control. We are a woman-owned small business, and I wanted to do everything I could to continue to foster that."She's now in the running for the Amber Grant for Women Entrepreneurs contest; if awarded, Twichel's company would receive ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County public health officials are urging locals who attended indoor services and events at a Kearny Mesa church to quarantine for two weeks after a COVID-19 outbreak linked to the location.The county says anyone who attended Awaken Church at 7620 Balboa Avenue between Nov. 15 and 22 should quarantine for 14 days after their last date of visiting the church and watch for coronavirus symptoms.Officials added that anyone who was at the church within that time frame should get tested for the virus.Generally, the county does not reveal the locations of community outbreaks and has long advocated against the practice. In this instance, public health officials say it's necessary to, "prevent the spread and occurrence of additional cases," and that, "in this case, public health has been unable to identify and notify all of those exposed."In a letter to the church, the county said while the community outbreak linked to the church doesn't mean that anyone contracted COVID-19 at the location, everyone who has attended events at the location should quarantine for 14 days.A community outbreak is three or more COVID-19 cases from different households within two weeks at one location."You should review your current plans to prevent COVID-19 at your location and determine if there are actions that you can take to reduce the likelihood that your staff, customers, or visitors could contract this infection," the letter said.The county added that anyone who has attended the church, as well as the public in general, should continue to wear face coverings, practice social distancing, and avoid large gatherings.With the exception of two days, San Diego County has seen new COVID-19 cases spike to more than 1,000 cases a day over the last week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Consumer spending in San Diego was down nearly .3 billion between February and April 2020, showing just how badly the COVID-19 pandemic crippled the local economy.Since stay-at-home orders began in March, SANDAG says taxable sales in the region dropped from an average of .3 billion to billion in April.The largest losses in the region were seen at apparel stores (an 83% decrease in sales) and restaurants (down 67%).On the other side, big-box retailers like Costco, Target, and Walmart have fared well, SANDAG says. Grocery stores and pharmacy, though, were actually down 10% in taxable sales. Home improvement sales were also up, likely due to stimulus checks, SANDAG adds."It is interesting to learn that grocery stores and pharmacy sales are actually down by 10%, while home improvement sales have spiked," said SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "We can assume that during the pandemic, people had more time to work on outdoor landscaping, gardens, and other home beautification projects. Plant seed companies also saw increases-- nearly four times their average sales."Consumer spending among online retailers like Amazon increased 35% as well.SANDAG's report estimates that consumer spending will continue to be down through August, though slightly less each month. 1306

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the world grieves the loss of Aretha Franklin, a local woman is recalling her final and historic San Diego concert on Shelter Island.Linda Moody is the widow of saxophone legend James Moody, who died in 2010. In 2005 during a newspaper interview, an excited Franklin, in town for a concert, learned Moody lived in San Diego.
