SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jim Jennings has spent the last nearly 20 years living on a street corner just a short walk from San Diego State University. "It's very vibrant, it keeps me young," he says. It's a community Jennings has seen grow, along with the university. Now, many of the homes around his are rented out to groups of students. The number of residents increased even more because the city has streamlined permitting for companion units, such as backyard granny flats or converted garages. The goal is to add to the housing supply amid a steep supply shortage. Jennings, a member of the area's planning board, says the concern that it will make a severe parking crunch even tighter once school starts next month is now the talk of the neighborhood."I don't want to move," he says. "I just want to be able to park in my neighborhood."The system in place aims to guarantee he is able to, but now it may be part of the problem. For decades, the only daytime street parking in the neighborhood south of the campus has been allowed by permit. Each residence is eligible for up to four, which can be used for visitors. The permit system, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., prevents SDSU students from parking in the neighborhood for free and going to class. Now, a memo from City Attorney Mara Elliott says people who live in companion units can't be treated any differently than those in a traditional home. Their dwelling may be in someone's backyard, but it comes with its own address, and therefore is eligible for four additional parking permits. In other words, a parcel with a granny flat or companion unit can qualify for up to eight street parking permits. "Denying all permits to residents of companion units while maintaining the current level of four permits for primary dwelling units would be legally problematic," the memo says, citing Equal Protection Clauses. In 2018, the city authorized more than 260 accessory dwelling units. Through May of this year, it has authorized an additional 119. Jennings says the increase is making it almost impossible for people to find street parking. "We have guests over, where are you going to park? You have to go, circle and circle around the block looking for parking," he said. Elliott's memo says the City Council can act on this issue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Mission Valley is in store to get an additional nearly 30,000 homes by 2050, according to a new plan the City Council unanimously passed Tuesday.The council voted 9-0 to pass the Mission Valley Community Plan, which would increase the number of allowed housing units in Mission Valley to 39,200. Currently, the area has about 11,200 units. The idea is to change Mission Valley's underutilized strip malls into mixed-use developments, where housing and commercial are under the same roof. "That dream, that American dream, that middle class security that is created by home ownership is now vanishing for a large segment of the population, and we can do better," said Jonathan Frankel, who heads the Mission Valley Community Planning Group. But Mission Valley is currently one of the cities most congested areas. Currently, the city says 600 people live and work in Mission Valley, but 40,000 commute in daily. As part of the plan, the city would add bridges and roads, plus an additional trolley stop and bike and walking paths. It would allow the people who do live and work in Mission Valley to get where they need to go, without a car. "The Mission Valley Community Plan Update is a no-brainer that will increase desperately needed housing stock, improve amenities for residents and will help the city meet its climate action goals,” Councilman Scott Sherman said in a statement. “I appreciate my council colleagues for approving this important community plan update.”The city aims to turn Mission Valley into a transit environment to help with the region's housing crisis and its climate action goals, a staff report says. 1654

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In anticipation of its members returning, 24 Hour Fitness locations around San Diego County have made several changes that will allow them to follow county health guidelines and keep their doors open.Under the state’s tiered system for businesses, 24 Hour Fitness is among those able to resume indoor operations, but with specific modifications in place.The fitness centers are now requiring reservations for 90-minute workout sessions, and each location can only operate at 10 percent capacity, so they have to keep a close eye on how many people are inside of the building.While reservations will not be required for clubs in San Diego County, each club in the county will be capped at a 10 percent capacity.Jeremy Franke, Regional Vice President of 24 Hour Fitness, said, “We have a check-in system where we can check at any time and know how many people are in the club. And when we reach capacity, our system flags and says we’re at capacity. And we’ll have the next person wait. Like retail stores, we let one in and one out if we get full.”Once inside the gym, social distancing is a must. There are signs and markers that remind members about staying six feet apart.24 Hour Fitness has also stepped up with cleaning and disinfecting, shutting everything down for 30-minute periods throughout the day to do so.Some things will remain closed, such as spas, saunas, pools, and basketball courts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you're single in San Diego, chances are you're not impressed by the dating field locally.At least according to Apartment List, which ranked 130 cities on their ability to provide singles with the best atmosphere. San Diego is, well, lukewarm according to the study.The city ranked 73 overall, right in the middle of the park and posting an overall score of 48 out of 100 possible points.RELATED: Love hurts: Price of a date in San Diego could cost you, study saysThe study ranked cities on their dating satisfaction, social satisfaction, dating affordability, and percentage of reported singles, using data from Apartment List’s Annual Renter Satisfaction Survey and Census Bureau American Community Survey 2017.When it broke down that way, only about 22% of respondents were satisfied with the dating in San Diego. How women and men feel about dating locally may give us an idea about why the city ranked where it did. About 17% of women and 35% of men were satisfied with dating here.Far more San Diegans, about 58%, were satisfied with their social lives in town.
