ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A beloved custodian at an elementary school in Encinitas is recovering after a spider bite led to an amputation."He's happy. He's smiling. Thankful he's alive," said Megan Luce, PTA President at Park Dale Lane Elementary School.Guil Aguilar has been a custodian at the school for more than five years."His spirits are so high when I visited," said Luce.Luce says his ordeal began at work, just before Thanksgiving break. Aguilar says as he was moving trash cans near a dumpster, he saw spiders but didn't think anything of it. After he left the area, he felt a twinge in his foot. He went with family to visit relatives in Arizona during Thanksgiving and his bite began to swell. He was admitted into a hospital, then transferred to an Encinitas hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a venomous spider bite. The type of spider is unknown. The treatment was not enough."There was an infection that they tried to clean out. The infection resulted in amputation of his foot and partial leg," said Luce.Luce says Aguilar handled the difficult news by focusing on the bright side."He was okay with it. He'd rather his foot be gone than his life," said Luce.As news of his ordeal spread, parents at the school rallied."I was heartbroken. He's such as an amazing, amazing person ... Always happy. He's always there to help. Goes over and beyond what he's supposed to do at the school," said Luce.The parents organized a meal train and a Gofundme campaign to help his family, including his five children, with expenses."He's not just a janitor. He's part of the community and part of the Park Dale Lane family," said Luce.The Encinitas Union School District issued the following statement: "The situation that you are inquiring about involves one of our employees and is currently under investigation by the District. Due to privacy rights and confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide an update on the employee ... In an abundance of caution, the District has taken the necessary precautions to ensure that all areas of campus have been inspected and are safe. (KGTV) - An Encinitas woman was caught off guard when an intruder squeezed through a doggy door at her home.Just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, Lexie Linberg was in her upstairs bedroom, located just off Coast Highway 101, when she got an alert from her Ring doorbell camera. A man was knocking at her door. Thinking it was a delivery, Linberg didn't answer. Moments later, she got another alert: someone was in her back yard."I heard the doggy door flap. My dog was next to me, so I knew I had a problem. I ran over to the balcony, dropped down, and saw feet going through my doggie door and I started screaming," said Linberg.Surveillance video shows same man at her door walk into her back yard. He took off his jacket before squeezing through her 10-inch-wide, 20-inch-tall doggy door. "Complete panic actually," said Linberg. Linberg's panic was quickly pushed aside by adrenaline. "I yelled a lot of profanities, told him to get out of my house," said Linberg.Linberg, who has taken self defense classes, then armed herself. She declined to tell us what that weapon was."Anger. I was mad. I wanted to get the person that was coming to hurt me," said Linberg.Next to her was Stella, her 6-year-old Poodle, trained as a guard dog."Racing down the stairs with my dog, absolutely going for him at this point," said Linberg.Linberg raced into a downstairs room, just in time to see the man's feet in the dog door. This time, he was on his way out. She gave chase down the street. He got away, but not before cameras caught a good look."He needs to be caught. It was obvious he knew what he was doing. (KGTV) - Westfield Mall will be terminating its leases with two pet stores operating on their properties in San Diego County.It comes after two animal rights groups filed a lawsuit against Westfield and Bark Avenue, the pet store in the North County Fair mall.“We want to shut them down,” said Bryan Pease, attorney for the Animal Protection and Rescue League and Not One Animal Harmed.The complaint accuses Bark Avenue of unfair business practices. Despite a new state law that prohibits the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits, except for rescues, Bark Avenue has continued to sell purebred and designer puppies. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — For Brian Masters, the prospect of owning two vintage John Deere tractors was an easy sell."I’ve always had an interest," Masters said of the tractors. And when his friend recently approached him to buy her two 1932 and 1946 model tractors, he jumped at the chance.After purchasing the tractors in July, he displayed them in his front yard with plans to have them running by this summer.But it wasn't until this month that he was slapped with a code enforcement violation by the City of Escondido."I parked them out there in late July and all of a sudden someone complained about me," Master said. "When I tried to talk to the enforcement officer, he just said they have to be out of public view."The code violation referenced "Sec. 33-96: Prohibited primary uses and structures" of the city code. The ordinance says, "All industrial, commercial and residential uses and structures not listed in this article are prohibited."Masters said he tried to speak with an enforcement officer about taking two weeks to move the machines, but was told he needed to move the tractors immediately — a tight timeline made all the more difficult when Masters believed his antiques were welcomed."At Halloween, we had a line of people posing and taking pictures with them," Masters said. "I don’t know who is complaining ... They were the centerpieces of our yard, it’s a little front yard."Masters said he is in the process of moving the classic tractors to his backyard. Facebook is launching a widespread effort to boost U.S. voter turnout and provide authoritative information about voting — just as it doubles down on its policy allowing politicians like President Donald Trump to post false information on the same subject.The social media giant is launching a “Voting Information Center” on Facebook and Instagram that will include details on registering to vote, polling places and voting by mail.
