SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- As restrictions on businesses ease up, five local DMV offices will reopen on Thursday.Seventy-one California DMV offices across the state will be open Thursday. In San Diego County, there will be seven reopened offices.Opened May 8, 2020:San MarcosSan Diego - NormalOpening May 28, 2020:San Diego - ClairemontChula VistaPowayEl CajonSan YsidroSince it's temporary closures on March 27, 2020, the DMV has encouraged the use of its expanded Virtual office, DMV kiosks inside supermarkets, and using partners like AAA.Starting Thursday, the DMV's newly reopened offices are only serving customers wearing masks, with appointments for things like vehicle inspections and new drivers licenses and ID's. Same-day appointments will only be made for people with critical transactions such as knowledge and vision tests and disabled parking placards. To honor social distancing guidelines, all behind the wheel tests have been canceled. No new drive test appointments will be available. But one 10News viewer told us that right after the announcement of the reopenings this week, parents rushed to the DMV website. Some were able to book a behind-the-wheel test as early as June 1 for their teens. But minutes later, when she tried to log on for her daughter, who's appointment this month was canceled, it was too late. The site had crashed."I think being able to drive is a life skill and one that these kids that have already lost so much deserve to be able to acquire! How old will they be when they can drive without mom?" the viewer said.In response to our inquiry, DMV Media Relations told 10News: 1626

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory through Thursday for the coastal areas and Friday for the inland valleys in San Diego County. The hot weather and dry fuels create dangerous fire weather conditions, keeping fire crews across the county on high alert.“At nine, it already felt significantly warmer than the last couple of days,” said Elizabeth Conniff as she ended her hike at Iron Mountain Trailhead. “It was pretty hot, hotter than I expected, and very dry.”Poway reached nearly 100 degrees before noon Tuesday, nearing record-breaking temperatures for this time of year.Conniff, an experienced hiker, said that she would not recommend hiking during this time.Hotter temperatures are forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday.“If it’s going to be 100 or over, stay home, and that is from somebody who hikes three or four days a week,” she said. The NWS warns the hot weather could cause heat-related illnesses and recommends that people stay hydrated and out of the sun.Firefighting agencies ask everyone to remain vigilant and be extra cautious about doing anything that could spark a wildfire. 1141

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeless people in San Diego woke up Tuesday morning to find San Diego Police officers going street by street, offering resources.  Police officers lined the streets of the East Village. They were going street by street approaching the homeless in their tents. At one point there were at least eight patrol cars on one block.  SDPD says their efforts are a part of their ongoing outreach to let the homeless know about the resources available to them in hopes of ending the cycle of homelessness.  Most of the homeless received warnings about their property blocking the street or other violations. A few were detained for previous violations. One person was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant. Two people were transported to county mental health. Officers were also letting people know about the new bathrooms installed by the city in hopes of stopping the spread of Hepatitis A.  965

San Diego Unified School Board president and math teacher Kevin Beiser will introduce a resolution at Tuesday night's meeting demanding action from state and federal lawmakers pass stricter gun control laws."It's an opportunity for us parents students and teachers to speak in unison and call on our elected officials to do what we know is right and implement reasonable gun reform now, said Beiser ahead of the meeting. The board did something similar after the Sandy Hook school shooting back in 2012 but Beiser thinks it's worth stating again. And although it's not included in the resolution, Beiser expects the issue of arming teachers to come up at the meeting.Last week President Trump said he favored arming teachers to protect students. 763
