KANSAS CITY, Kan. — John Schooley arrived in Wyandotte County Court wearing a black and white jail jump suit.It was a sharp contrast to his Schlitterbahn co-defendant Jeff Henry, who appeared in the same courtroom last week wearing a suit and tie.Schooley and Henry are the designers of the Verrückt water slide.The men are accused of being reckless in their design, and of knowing the slide was dangerous.Ten-year-old Caleb Schwab died on the water slide in 2016.Kansas City, Missouri, Attorney Justin Johnston argued Schooley's bond should be reduced from 0,000 to 0,000.He argued Schooley willingly turned himself in after arriving in Dallas from a business trip in China and isn't a flight risk.Johnston also said Schooley's wife and adult children live in the U.S., he has property in Texas and Alabama and retired from the Verrückt project in April 2015 with HSC Construction.Johnston also said he had letters of support for Schooley from people in the amusement park construction industryBut Wyandotte County Judge Robert Burns ruled against reducing the bond.Judge Burns said the bond was appropriate for the serious charges against Schooley and noted Schooley doesn't have any ties to the Kansas City metro area.Judge Burns also ordered Schooley to give up his passport, which he volunteered to do.As part of the bond, Schooley can't violate any laws.After the hearing, Johnston and Assistant Attorney General Adam Zentner declined comment on the bond ruling. 1517

(KGTV) - A flurry of reports about a foul odor in the La Jolla and Clairemont neighborhoods had San Diego Fire-Rescue crews busy Wednesday afternoon.Crews had at least six calls about possible gas leaks starting about 3:30 p.m. Three calls came from La Jolla, a fourth was just east of U.C. San Diego, a fifth call in University City, and a sixth came from Clairemont. Firefighters found no evidence of a gas leak. Initially, a spokesperson for the Fire Department said she believed the smell could be coming from a kelp bloom off La Jolla. Jenna Ellis, a senior legal advisor for the Trump campaign, has reportedly contracted the coronavirus, according to multiple sources.Ellis has been traveling with President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani as the campaign challenges election results, unsuccessfully, in various states.Giuliani is currently in the hospital being treated for COVID-19.Ellis attended a White House Christmas party on Friday with senior staff, according to Axios. Her COVID-19 diagnosis has some worried whether she was contagious at the time of the party.Ellis came as a guest of Trump’s trade adviser Peter Navarro, and was not seen wearing a mask at the indoor event, according to sources who spoke to Axios.Ellis appeared to question the existence of the pandemic this summer, sending a tweet on August 30 that claimed "There is no pandemic." LA JOLLA, Calif (KGTV) - A La Jolla man is turning recycled plastic into stuffed animals to help teach kids the importance of protecting the ocean.Malte Niebelschuetz created the "Shore Buddies" in 2014. He started with four animals: Steven Seagull, Sammy the Seal, Emma the Whale and Fin the Dolphin. Now, he's running a Kickstarter campaign to help create a new doll, Shelly the Sea Turtle. He's also hoping to publish a children's book that he wrote starring the animals."The kids, they are our future," he says. "They will shape this planet into a plastic-free society."The stuffed animals are made out of recycled plastic. Each animal uses six plastic bottles. Niebelschuetz says the plastic is broken down into a fiber, which is then turned into yarn."In just four years, we've kept more than 100,000 plastic bottles out of the ocean and turned them into fluffy, cute Shore Buddies," he says.Neibelschuetz is taking the dolls and book to schools across San Diego. He reads to the classes and teaches the kids how to keep plastic out of the ocean.Recently, he read at La Jolla's Gillispie School. The school has a "Big Project" going on that gets kids from Kindergarten to 6th grade engaged in issues that affect the community. One of them is human effects on the coastline."I truly believe in being the change you want to see in the world," says Niebelschuetz.
