BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Senior Party leader Zhou Yongkang Wednesday asked all law enforcement organs to maintain social stability through careful work at the grassroots level. It will be an important task for all law enforcement organs to create a peaceful social environment next year to welcome the 60thanniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, said Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, at a conference of law enforcement officials nationwide. Law enforcement organs should try their best to find out and properly solve the problems at the grassroots level so as to prevent mass incidents from happening, he said. He also asked them to prevent and crack down upon serious crimes that threatened people's life and property. Law enforcement organs should also contribute to the country's economic work through effective implementation of laws, he said. They were asked to effectively handle cases of violation of economic laws and work to maintain the market order. Next year the country will push forwards the reform on its judicial system, such as to improve supervision on law enforcement organs, Zhou said. He vowed to fight corruption in law enforcement organs.

DOHA, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- China on Saturday called for efforts to create global development partnerships and urged the international community to take practical steps to help developing nations in confronting the ongoing global financial crisis. Vice Chinese Foreign Minister He Yafei, as the special envoy of Chinese President Hu Jintao, made the remarks at the plenary session of the U.N.-sponsored Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development. The spreading international financial crisis, coupled with the complicated and grave international economic situation, is posing a challenge to efforts to implement the Millennium Development Goals, He said. The international community should approach the issue of financing for development from an overall and long-term perspective, establish partnerships for global development and take practical steps to help the developing countries. On the issue of financing for development, a balance needs to be struck in the following points, He said. Special attention should be given to efforts to minimize the impact of the financial crisis on developing countries, so as to maintain a good balance between stabilizing the financial market and helping vulnerable countries and communities. Moreover, relevant parties should do more to promote global economic growth and stability, and stand firm against protectionism in efforts to conclude the Doha round of negotiations at an early date, he said. He also urged the developed nations to fulfill their commitments on aid, and offer debt forgiveness and technology transfers to the developing nations. While seeking solutions to the longstanding problem of development deficits, countries around the world should also mobilize new and extra funds to effectively cope with such emerging challenges as energy security, food security and climate change, He said. On crisis response and prevention, He called on countries worldwide to continue their efforts in stabilizing the financial market as well as in building a just, equitable, inclusive and orderly international financial system. Efforts should be made to carry out necessary reforms of the existing international financial system and its governance structures in a timely, gradual, comprehensive and balanced manner, He added. The United Nations, the most authoritative international organization in the world, should continue to play its leading role in financing so as to encourage the international community to make bigger investments in development, he noted.
DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday stressed confidence, cooperation and responsibility as key to overcoming the current global financial crisis. The global financial crisis is a challenge for the whole world, and the pressing task for the international community is "to take further measures to restore market confidence as soon as possible," Wen told participants attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting in the Swiss skiing resort of Davos. In tackling the crisis, confidence is the source of strength, practical cooperation the effective way and accepting responsibilities the prerequisite, he said in his special message at the forum. "We should not only take more forceful and effective steps to tide over the current difficulties, but also push for the establishment of a new world economic order that is just, equitable, sound and stable," Wen said. To this end, international economic cooperation and a sound multilateral trading regime should be promoted, and the reform of the international financial system should be advanced, he said. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) answers questions after speaking at the World Economic Forum annual meeting, in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 28, 2009.It is also necessary to strengthen international cooperation in financial supervision and regulation to guard against the build-up and spread of financial risks, the Chinese premier said. Wen said the interests of developing countries should be effectively protected and economic development of the whole world should be promoted. He also called for jointly tackling global challenges, such as climate change, environmental degradation, natural disasters and food security. "No country can be insulated from these challenges or meet them on its own. The international community should intensify cooperation and respond to these challenges together," Wen said. Wen, who is on a visit to Switzerland, traveled on Wednesday to Davos to attend the forum after meeting with President of the Swiss Confederation Hans-Rudolf Merz for talks on bilateral ties on Tuesday. Switzerland is the first leg of Wen's European tour, which will later take him to Germany, the European Union headquarters, Spain and Britain.
