The mayor of Compton, California, has told the Los Angeles Times that she is launching a pilot program with a local non-profit that will give 800 residents a "guaranteed income" over the next two years.Compton Mayor Aja Brown told the Times that a non-profit called the Compton Pledge would select 800 low-income residents and distribute a "guaranteed income" to them for the next two years.According to the Times, the participants will be selected from a "pre-verified" list of low-income families in the area. Over the span of two years, the Compton Pledge plans to provide the families with "at least a few hundred dollars on a recurring basis" without any strings attached. The program will also provide families with financial guidance and track their spending and well-being throughout the process. While the Compton Pledge has not said where it is getting its funding or how much participants would receive, The Los Angeles Times reports that the program hopes to include a "representative sample" of the city's racial makeup in its participants.Once considered a fringe concept, the idea of a "universal basic income" has gained traction among left-wing politicians in recent years. Such a policy would provide all Americans with a monthly stipend which recipients would be free to spend as they see fit. Businessman Andrew Yang ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination based on the idea. The concept gained further traction amid the COVID-19 pandemic when lawmakers agreed to provide most Americans with a ,200 check as the government shut down businesses to prevent the spread of the virus. While critics of a universal basic income claim such a policy would lead to high unemployment numbers and lead to spending on non-essential goods, some studies have shown that's not always the case. A similar program being conducted in Stockton, California, shows that recipients of basic income funds were mostly spent on food, clothes, and utility bills. 1975

The Louisville Metro police department has fired one of the police officers involved in the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor. A termination letter for Officer Brett Hankison released by the city’s police department today said Hankinson violated procedures by showing “extreme indifference to the value of human life." The letter also said Hankinson violated the rule against using deadly force. Taylor, who was Black, was shot eight times by officers who burst into her Louisville home using a no-knock warrant during a March 13 narcotics investigation. Two other officers remain on administrative reassignment while the shooting is investigated.Taylor, who was employed as an EMT, was inside of her home when police conducted a “no-knock raid” on her home. The makers of the wildly popular video game Fortnite are facing a lawsuit from a rival company that claims the game violates intellectual property. The PUBG Corporation, the makers of PlayerUnkonwn's Battlegrounds, filed the lawsuit against Epic Games, claiming that Fortnite copied the "last-man standing" game concept.MORE:?Fortnite: What it is and why it is so popularAccording to the BBC, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was first released in March 2017. Fortnite was first released a few months later in July, but didn't release its popular "Battle Royale" mode until September. Both Battlegrounds' and Fortnite's Battle Royale mode both host up to 100 players online at a single time. The object of both games is to eliminate all other players and be the last person standing, and both games take place on an island. According to The Verge, both games were also developed on Unreal Engine 4, a system developed by Epic Games. However, the games do have notable differences: Fortnite allows players to gather materials and build fortresses and barriers. While PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has waned in popularity, Fortnite has exploded around the world. Up to 3 million will be playing the game at one time, and millions more will watch professional gamers and celebrities play the game on the streaming service Twitch.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. The last year has been a challenging one for New York City, which was among the hardest hit areas in the world for coronavirus cases.Months after a spring surge of cases, schools closed and hospitals filled with coronavirus patients this week, as life is struggling to return to normal. One sign life isn’t back to normal is that next week’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be held without spectators. In honor of the front-line workers keeping New York City safe and healthy, Macy’s has decorated its storefront at its flagship store in Midtown Manhattan with the theme "Give, Love and Believe."The tradition of decorating the storefront dates back 146 years. Macy’s installed social distancing markers in front of the mural to space onlookers. The storefront is part of a broader theme of philanthropy at all Macy’s locations throughout the United States. All Macy’s locations will have a red mailbox where children can address letters to Santa. For each letter received by Macy’s addressed to Santa, the retailer will donate , up to million, to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.“Believe is a special moment for the Macy’s family each year,” said Lauren Anania, Macy’s Director of Cause Execution. “As we celebrate the wonder of giving, we feel privileged to support Make-A-Wish in its quest to grant the wishes of children in need. We are proud of the passion that our colleagues bring and grateful to our customers for turning this program into a tradition of endless generosity and community through the collection of millions of letters over the last 11 years.” 1575
