PYONGYANG, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- A delegation of senior Chinese military officers watched the "Arirang" performance here Saturday night as part of celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the entry of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) into the Korean War front.The delegation, led by Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, is on a four-day visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). They were joined at the show by Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK.Before the show, Guo met Kim and a number of other DPRK leaders, including Choe Yong Rim, premier of the cabinet, and Kim Yong Chun, vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission.Guo hailed the DPRK's attention to its relations with China. He said the visit of the delegation was to implement the important consensus reached between Chinese President Hu Jintao and the DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Il.China would work with the DPRK side to make an active contribution to the continuous promotion of the Sino-DPRK friendship, Guo said.Kim Yong Nam warmly welcomed the visit of the Chinese delegation.The DPRK cherished its friendship with China. To consolidate and develop the relations was the firm will of the DPRK, Kim said.The "Arirang", a mass gymnastic and artistic show with some 100,000 performers, showcased the achievements made by the DPRK people in socialist construction, and their love of the fatherland, aspiration for reunification and peace.The CPV entered the DPRK on Oct. 25, 1950, about four months after the Korean War broke out.In an article marking the anniversary, the DPRK's official KCNA news agency said Thursday that the CPV not only displayed a spirit of self-sacrifice and heroism but also promoted friendship.

ATHENS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday pledged to support a stable euro and strengthen cooperation with the European Union (EU)."China will not reduce its euro-bond holdings and China supports a stable euro," Wen said during a speech at the Greek parliament.China and the EU have signed a string of important trade investment contracts to help Europe overcome its financial difficulties, said Wen who arrived in Athens on Saturday on a three-day official visit.Since the outbreak of the global financial crisis, Chinese leaders have visited Europe several times and had frequent meetings with EU leaders, noted the Chinese premier.That, he said, shows Beijing attaches great importance to China-EU relations and "wants to join you in a concerted effort to tide over difficulties."After some European countries suffered sovereign debt crisis earlier this year, Wen said, his government announced many times that Beijing firmly supports the measures adopted by the EU and the International Monetary Fund."China is sincere in enhancing cooperation with Europe and we are confident about the prospects of our cooperation," Wen said.Thanks to joint efforts, China-EU trade has already exceeded the pre-crisis level, he said."China is committed to advancing China-EU relations. BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature on Saturday approved an amendment to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region regarding the method of selecting Hong Kong's Chief Executive.The amendment to Annexes I to the Basic Law was approved at the bimonthly meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, which ended Saturday.The NPC Standing Committee approved an examination report on an amendment to Annexes II of the Basic Law concerning the formation of the city's Legislative Council and agreed to file it on the record.The NPC Standing Committee's concluding meeting was presided over by Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.The two amendments would take effect after the legislature's approval, Wu said.Wu said the two amendments had embodied the common opinions among the Hong Kong communities, gone through due procedures in the laws and was in accordance with interpretations and decisions of the NPC Standing Committee.The two amendments would help to maintain and promote the long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong, Wu said.The NPC Standing Committee members had called for unswervingly following the principle of "one country, two systems" and the Basic Law, to push forward a gradual promotion of Hong Kong's political system, Wu said.Legislators at the session also adopted the People's Mediation Law and the amendment to the Law on Officers in Reserve Forces.Further, President Hu Jintao signed decrees to publish the new Law, which will come into effect in 2011, and the amendment to the Law on Officers in Reserve Forces, which will be implemented after its being published.The legislature also ratified the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.During his speech at the concluding meeting, Wu also said the situation of China's economy was in a crucial stage from recovery to a steady growth.However, he noted that the work to maintain satisfactory growth was still an arduous job.Wu also said he appreciated the reports on cleaner production inspection and grain safety work, which were presented during the session.The NPC Standing Committee also appointed Chen Jianguo and Shi Zongyuan as vice chairmen of two special committees under the NPC.

BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday handed out the first group of Internet map service licenses to 31 Chinese and joint-venture operators, after authorities tightened market access amid worries that booming Internet map services might undermine state security.The 31 operators, including a national-level map publisher, several map service providers affiliated with major Chinese portals such as Baidu.com and Sina.com, and nearly a dozen state-owned local research institute or mapping bureaus, obtained a class-A license from the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.Operators who obtain a class-A license will be allowed to conduct services including map searching and locations, marking geographic information, downloading and copying of maps, and map transmissions and quotations. Class-B licenses will restrict companies to offer services of map searching and locations, as well as geographic information marking.All Internet map services providers will have to apply for a license, while those operating without the license will be prosecuted in China in accordance with the law, said an official from the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, who required anonymity.The official did not elaborate on the deadline for license applications.Foreign-owned or foreign-invested Internet firms can apply for the license in the capacity of joint ventures or through cooperation with Chinese businesses, according to the official.Nokia Alliance Internet Services Company Limited, a joint venture between Nokia and New Alliance, which is part of the Shanghai Alliance Investment Limited, is among the businesses that have obtained a class-A license.
