SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A UC San Diego Health professor is one of 85 members in the health and medicine field elected to this year's class of the National Academy of Medicine, UCSD announced today.Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado is the chair and founder of UCSD's Department of Biomedical Informatics."Bioinformatics and big data are increasingly a foundation and driver of modern medicine. Lucila is an undisputed expert and pioneer in both," said Dr. David Brenner, UCSD's vice chancellor of health sciences. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As more people went back to work last month, the region's unemployment dropped to 13.9% in June, 1.3% lower than the previous month, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.The coronavirus and its related job loss still looms large over the economy even as some industries begin to resume business. The state's unemployment rate dropped to 15.1% in June, while nationally, the rate decreased to 11.2% in the same time period. The data does not reflect public health orders in July shutting down some industries again. The unemployment rate is likely higher now than the period the data monitored.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 54,000 jobs between May and June to reach about 1.35 million. It was the first increase in non-farm employment since February. Farm jobs remained steady.The leisure and hospitality sector led the monthly increase by adding 34,700 jobs, 29,900 of which were in the food service and accommodation industries. Arts, entertainment and recreation added 4,800 jobs.The trade, transportation and utilities sector logged 9,500 jobs gained month-over-month, the largest portion of which was in clothing and clothing accessories stores, with 3,900 added jobs.Construction gained 4,100, educational and health services 2,800, other services 2,200, manufacturing 1,900, professional and business services 1,600, financial activities 900 and information 200.Mining and logging employment did not show any gains or losses.The only industry to lose jobs was the government sector, which lost 3,900 jobs in June.Comparing year-over-year, the San Diego region lost 153,600 non-farm jobs and 800 agricultural jobs. Jerry Brown today appointed a former Del Mar councilman to the 22nd District Agricultural Association Board of Directors and reappointed two other San Diego County residents to the panel.Brown named Del Mar resident Donald Mosier, 74, to a four-year term on the board that governs the Del Mar Fairgrounds on behalf of the state via a nine-member board of directors. The governor appoints each member of the board to serve a four-year term.The District Agricultural Association is a subdivision of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, charged with holding fairs and exhibitions that highlight "various industries, enterprises, resources, and products of the state," according to the CDFA.The governor reappointed attorney Frederick Schenk, 65, and Lisa Barkett, 59, who have served since 2011.Mosier is the Climate Action Plan facilitator for the city of Del Mar and is a member of multiple governing boards, including the Del Mar Community Connections Board, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Climate Action Campaign Board of Directors. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who sexually trafficked a 15-year-old girl in the San Diego area was sentenced today to 15 years in federal custody. Joseph Price, 24, of San Diego, convinced the victim to post an online advertisement offering sex and drove her to meet with customers throughout San Diego County, according to court documents.The complaint filed last year states that the girl took part in the commercial sex acts on nearly a dozen occasions last summer and all of the money she earned went to Price. She also told investigators that on one occasion, when she did not want to engage in certain sex acts that the customer -- or ``john'' -- requested, Price struck her in the face.Price was arrested last August by San Diego police in connection with a parole violation stemming from a first-degree burglary conviction. He was later charged with sex trafficking of a minor by federal prosecutors and pleaded guilty last December.As part of his plea, Price also admitted to meeting two other underage girls over social media and encouraging them to take part in sex acts for money. The U.S. Attorney's Office said one of the girls did so and sent the money she made to Price, who encouraged both girls to leave their families in Texas and travel to San Diego to continue working for him.``Sex trafficking of teenagers targets some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community, and leaves in its wake trauma that can affect victims for the rest of their lives,'' said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. ``The U.S. Attorney's Office is deeply committed to ensuring that justice is done for the victims of these horrible crimes.'' 1641

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of opening fire inside a Poway synagogue, killing a woman and injuring three other people, pleaded not guilty today to more than 100 federal hate crime charges alleging he acted out of hatred toward the Jewish and Muslim communities.John T. Earnest, 19, is accused not only of the synagogue shooting but also of an earlier arson fire at an Escondido mosque. He is being charged by both federal and state prosecutors and faces a possible death sentence in both cases. Neither office has made a decision regarding whether they will pursue the death penalty.Earnest, of Rancho Penasquitos, is accused of carrying out the shooting at Chabad of Poway on April 27 -- the last day of Passover -- killing Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who was shot twice in the synagogue's foyer and died at a hospital.The congregation's rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein, 57, lost an index finger in the shooting. Two other people -- Almog Peretz, 34, and his 8-year-old niece, Noya Dahan -- were also injured.Earnest is also accused of setting a March 24 fire at an Escondido mosque -- a crime to which Earnest allegedly confessed in an online manifesto he posted prior to the synagogue shooting.Following his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon, he's slated to return to court May 28 for a preliminary hearing. He remains held without bail.He was charged last Thursday with 109 federal hate crimes: -- 54 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs using a dangerous weapon, resulting in death, bodily injury and attempts to kill; -- 54 counts of hate crimes stemming from the synagogue shooting in violation of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act; and -- one count of damage to religious property by use of fire.Each of the 54 hate crime and obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs counts apply to a person who was inside the synagogue during the shooting, Brewer said. Among those people, 12 of the congregants present were children, he said.Earnest is due back in federal court May 28.Earnest is also charged in state court with murder, attempted murder and arson. His next court hearing in the state's case is a readiness conference set for May 30.Kaye, a longtime member of Chabad of Poway, was at the temple with her physician husband and daughter the day of the shooting to honor her mother, who recently died. The rabbi, Goldstein, lost his right index finger in the shooting. Peretz was shot in a leg while shepherding children to safety. His niece was struck by shrapnel in her face and leg.An off-duty Border Patrol agent working as a security guard was inside the temple when the shooting began, and he opened fire as the suspect fled, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said. The agent did not strike Earnest, but did hit the suspect's car, authorities said.Police said Earnest called 911 at around 11:30 a.m. and said he had been involved in the shooting and was armed.According to the federal complaint, Earnest told a dispatcher, ``I just shot up a synagogue. I'm just trying to defend my nation from the Jewish people ... They're destroying our people ... I opened fire at a synagogue. I think I killed some people.'' He allegedly added that he shot up the synagogue ``because the Jewish people are destroying the white race.''A San Diego police officer who had been en route to the synagogue spotted the suspect's vehicle and pulled him over at 17051 W. Bernardo Drive, less than two miles west of the synagogue, Deputy District Attorney Leonard Trinh said.Earnest got out of his vehicle with his hands up and was taken into custody without further incident, according to police.In the ``open letter'' that authorities say Earnest posted online shortly before the shooting, the author espouses flagrant anti-Semitic sentiments and a need to protect the ``European race.'' He wrote that he spent four weeks planning the attack, citing his ``disgust'' for Jews and a desire to kill them, and expressed admiration for the Australian white nationalist who attacked two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March, killing 50 people.The writer also claims responsibility for the March 24 fire set at the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque, also known as Islamic Center of Escondido. The 3:15 a.m. fire was quickly extinguished by people inside the mosque.
