ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County woman says she was scammed at a gas station by a performance 'worthy of an Oscar.'"We pull in and my husbands about to pump in the gas," said Alice. An ordinary trip to fill up turned eventful last month at the Shell gas station on Santa Fe Drive. "I see a man pull up in a black SUV, brand new and shiny," said Alice. Alice says a man in his 30s got out of the GMC Yukon and approached them."He was in head-to-toe designer clothes," said Alice. In the backseat was a well-dressed woman and a little girl."He says, 'Excuse me, Sir. I'm here vacationing from Dubai with my family and my wallet was stolen,'" said Alice. The man asked for some money for gas and then took out a ring."Here, take my ring. It's worth 0. I have money and plenty of jewelry at home. I just need money for gas and food," said Alice.Alice told the man to keep the ring and then had her husband put in on a pump with their credit card."I believed their story ... I put myself in their shoes. I would be devastated, and I would want someone to help me," said Alice.Days later, she learned from her cousin in Los Angeles those strangers were scammers. "I was the 4th person she knew of personally that this happened to. I was duped," said Alice."Then this past Wednesday, Alice was back at the gas station and filling up, when she saw something familiar," said Alice. It was another new GMC Yukon. Inside was a different family. She saw them talking with a young man, before pulling out a ring. "I ran over put my hand in front of the guy and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a scam!" said Alice. She learned the family had a similar story about vacationing from Dubai. The SUV sped off, leaving behind a woman hoping others don't fall victim."It makes me angry. It's the giving season and they take advantage of that. They're actors. They played their part perfectly. They're going to get an Oscars, and I handed them the award," said Alice.Alice believes both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. She says she contacted the sheriff's department but was told this incident would likely be defined as panhandling, which isn't a crime. 2184
Facebook is launching a widespread effort to boost U.S. voter turnout and provide authoritative information about voting — just as it doubles down on its policy allowing politicians like President Donald Trump to post false information on the same subject. The social media giant is launching a “Voting Information Center” on Facebook and Instagram that will include details on registering to vote, polling places and voting by mail. It will draw the information from state election officials and local election authorities. The information hub, which will be prominently displayed on Facebook news feeds and on Instagram later in the summer — is similar to the coronavirus information center the company launched earlier this year in an attempt to elevate facts and authoritative sources of information on COVID-19.Facebook and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, continue to face criticism for not removing or labeling posts by Trump that that spread misinformation about voting by mail and, many said, encouraged violence against protesters.“I know many people are upset that we’ve left the President’s posts up, but our position is that we should enable as much expression as possible unless it will cause imminent risk of specific harms or dangers spelled out in clear policies,” Zuckerberg wrote earlier this month. In a USA Today opinion piece Tuesday, Zuckerberg reaffirmed that position.“Ultimately, I believe the best way to hold politicians accountable is through voting, and I believe we should trust voters to make judgments for themselves,” he wrote. “That’s why I think we should maintain as open a platform as possible, accompanied by ambitious efforts to boost voter participation.”Facebook’s free speech stance may have more to do with not wanting to alienate Trump and his supporters while keeping its business options open, critics suggest.Dipayan Ghosh, co-director of the Platform Accountability Project at Harvard Kennedy School, said Facebook “doesn’t want to tick off a whole swath of people who really believe the president and appreciate” his words. In addition to the voting hub, Facebook will also now let people turn off political and social issue ads that display the “paid for by” designation, meaning a politician or political entity paid for it. The company announced this option in January but it is going into effect now.Sarah Schiff, product manager who works on ads, cautioned that Facebook’s systems “aren’t perfect” and said she encourages users to report “paid for by” ads they see if they have chosen not to see them. 2553

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - With studies showing San Diegans are spending more time than ever stuck in traffic, we're listening and looking for answers to your travel headaches.A new technology being hailed as a "game changer" by some experts takes aims at those achy, tiresome commutes. Cadillac's Super Cruise, the only hands-free semi-autonomous driving feature on the highways, is now on local roads. 10News reporter Michael Chen went to North County Cadillac and took a long for a test drive in the CT6 sedan on I-15.Once on the highway, the feature was activated with the push of a button on the steering wheel. The feature allows the driver to go feet- and hands-free as long as you stay in one lane. "If someone slows down in front of me, it will slow down our speed," said Drew Doran. While other driver-assistance systems use cameras to center a car, Doran says General Motors has extensive laser mapping of US highways that leads to better accuracy."It actually knows what is ahead of the vehicle," said Doran. On the hour-long drive, we tracked every curve and every time, it stayed in the center of the lane. The driver still expected to be on standby. A camera on the steering wheel watches for distractions. If the driver is doing something like reading and blocking that camera, it will warn the driver. When we blocked the camera, a green light flashed - the first of several alerts - before Super Cruise disengaged. Doran says he recently went on a trip to Los Angeles with his wife. He says he used Super Cruise for about 80% of a drive that left him feeling relaxed. "Not the usual back pain. I actually felt wonderful," said Doran. The Cadillac CT6 will cost you about ,000, but industry experts says GM could deploy the well-received Super Cruise in vehicles priced around ,000 starting next year.AUTONOMOUS VS. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — The victims of Friday's deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas were identified Saturday, as officials reopened the beach but cautioned that the area remained active. Speaking to the press, Encinitas Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles said the site around the collapse will remain taped off from the public as crews continue to assess the stability of the rock."From what we've learned this morning ... the area's still active. [Geotechnical consultant] is concerned about the areas to the side of the current failure failing," Giles said. "The failure is not affecting the structures up top. Geotech is assuring us that is not a factor."RELATED: Three dead, two injured in north San Diego County bluff collapseA 30-foot by 25-foot slab of rock came crashing down onto Grandview Beach at about 3 p.m. Friday, killing one person and injuring four others. Two of those injured in the collapse later died of their injuries. Two of the three victims were identified as 35-year-old Anne Clave and 65-year-old Julie Davis.Officials moved a nearby lifeguard tower next to the site of the collapse as a safety precaution, Giles said. The beach, though, would reopen to the public Saturday, Giles said.Lifeguards will be posted nearby throughout the weekend as well.SATURDAY PRESS CONFERENCE:Moments after the collapse, beachgoers and lifeguards began sifting through the rubble to save those caught in the rocks' path."The lifeguard was there, adjacent to the incident, felt it, heard it. It just happened to take place outside of his peripheral, as he was watching the water it happened behind him," Giles told reporters. "He immediately got out of the lifeguard tower, called it in, sized it up, started requesting resources and engaged in doing rescue work."Other lifeguards in the area filtered in quickly along with fire crews from around the area."INTERACTIVE MAP: Most recent San Diego County bluff collapsesLifeguards warn beachgoers about hazardous areas of the beach's bluffs, Giles added. Though, lifeguards can only warn visitors and not forcibly remove them from being too close. The city recommends beachgoers stay 25 to 40 feet away from bluffs and exercise caution due to the cliffs' natural instability."This is a naturally eroding coastline so it does happen from time to time. This is an isolated incident ... at this location," Giles said. "Our hearts go out to the families and friends that were involved."RELATED: Encinitas bluffs are a trouble spot known to geologists 2506
