The Humane Society of the United States went undercover, investigating animal testing at one of the largest contract research organizations in the world. Officials found dozens of beagles and hounds that were force-fed fungicides to test a new pesticide product at a lab in Michigan.The undercover video is hard to watch. "In some cases, the animals are forced to ingest substances either by putting a gel capsule down their throats or with a tube,” Kathleen Conlee, vice president of Animal Research Issues at the Humane Society of the United States, can be heard saying in the undercover video. For some, it’s hard to fathom. However, Conlee says this kind of animal testing happens more often than we think. "There are about 60,000 dogs at about 350 facilities in the United States right now, and I think the public is very shocked to learn that it's at that scale,” Conlee says. And that's just dogs. Conlee explains when you factor in all animals, the number being used for testing is closer to 25 million per year. "That's warm-blooded animals that doesn't include fish, reptiles, amphibians," she explains. In this case out of Michigan, 36 beagles were being used to test pesticides for a company called Dow Chemical Company. It’s a practice that is not against the law. "The company is doing legal activities,” Conlee says. “Nothing illegal was happening." Often times, Conlee says federal agencies like the FDA and EPA request animal tests to approve products or provide funding for experiments. Most recently, the U.S.D.A. was under fire by a separate animal watchdog group for alleged "kitten cannibalism,” where they report experiments involving feeding kittens to dogs. The average pay for America’s private university presidents grew by 10.5% in 2017, with dozens receiving more than million and three topping the million mark, according to an annual survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.The survey, released Tuesday, finds that private university presidents at more than 500 schools averaged 8,000 in total annual compensation, including salary, bonuses, benefits and other perks. Their average pay increased by 4% in 2016 and by 9% in the previous year.The two top earners in 2017 both came from schools in Rhode Island. Ronald K. Machtley, of Bryant University, received .28 million, while John J. Bowen, of Johnson & Wales University, received .3 million. Bowen retired at the end of 2018, and Machtley has announced he will retire later this year.Although both presidents earn base salaries under million, their total pay was inflated by deferred compensation deals that came to fruition in 2017, The Chronicle found. The CEO of Wawa is apologizing after the convenience store chain became a center of a massive data breach.According to an open letter from Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens, the company discovered malware on Wawa's payment processing servers between December 10 and 12 of 2019. Gheysens said in the letter that the same malware affected customer payment card information used "at potentially all Wawa locations beginning March 4, 2019 and until it was contained."The malware accessed customers' payment card information, including credit and debit card numbers, expiration dates and cardholder names at potentially inside the store and at the self-serve pumps, according to Wawa."At this time, we believe this malware no longer poses a risk to Wawa customers using payment cards at Wawa, and this malware never posed a risk to our ATM cash machines," Gheysens said in the letter.Wawa said although the dates may vary and some Wawa locations may not have been affected at all, the malware was present on most store systems by mid April of 2019.
