After massive immigration raid near Morton, Mississippi, the community seems split on the issue.“It’s creating division,” resident Sidney Overby says. “I believe that we do not need to divide the people that are here.”Outside a local Walmart, one woman says she’s happy about the raids. “It’s a good thing to get the illegals out of the country,” says one woman outside a local Walmart. “If you want to come here legally, than by all means do that, but don’t try to come here illegally.”During the immigration raids in Mississippi, 680 arrests were made, which was the largest in a decade on U.S. soil.“Some families don’t know about their families,” says resident Leslyn Cazares. “The kids are crying for their dad and mom.”Cazares says her uncle and aunt are two of the hundreds of people now facing deportation.“Why can people can do that?” she asks about the arrests. “The people don’t do anything. They come here for work for their family.”Many of those taken away by immigration officials worked at the Koch’s Foods Processing plant. “Kids come home and they don’t where they parents and they don’t how they’re going to survive,” says a man who says he’s worked at Koch’s for 13 years. He went on to say these raids have impacted productivity.“Wasn’t nobody at work; the plant was empty,” he says. “Most of the plant is Mexican, and without them being there they overworked a lot of the people, the blacks and the whites.”Black, white, and brown, some say the only color that really matters is green. “It’s like everybody disappeared; it’s like a ghost town,” says grocery store owner Juan Garcia. “You don’t see a lot of people outside.”Garcia says his business is suffering because the raids have taken away many of his customers, and that the ones left are too scared to come out and shop.“I feel pretty bad because the same thing happened about 10 years ago when we were in Laurel,” he says of another city in Mississippi. “It was bad for the business over there and it’s going to bad over here, too.” Garcia recorded cell phone video of the raid, which showed buses used to remove alleged undocumented immigrants from the Koch’s property. A new study found 9/11 first responders may face a heightened risk of developing leukemia, nearly two decades after the terror attacks.Moshe Shapiro is a biostatistician with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. His team studied 29,000 members of the World Trade Center Health Program, which consists of police officers and other recovery workers.“Leukemia, we found a 41% increase in incidence compared to the general population,” Shapiro told PIX11.Researchers have long known about the substances recovery workers were exposed to in the dust and debris. Shapiro said this latest study shows illnesses like leukemia may continue to develop long after exposure. 682

A United States Postal Service spokesperson said on Wednesday that there has been some misinformation on the status of mail going from the United States and China. A USPS spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that mail addressed to China, Hong Kong and Macao will continue to be accepted by the USPS. The World Health Organization also noted that the coronavirus does not survive for long on objects, which means it is safe to accept packages given the transit time between China and the United States, which can often take weeks. USPS said it has implemented measures to ensure the safety of mail processing and postal staff, including disinfection of postal offices, processing centers and transportation vehicles, and monitoring of postal staff’s physical health.While USPS continues to accept mail destined to areas affected by the coronavirus, the coronavirus has caused some significant disruption of service between the two nations.“Due to widespread airline cancellations, capacity constraints and restrictions into this area, the U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended the guarantee on Priority Mail Express International destined for China and Hong Kong, effective Monday, Feb. 10, 2020,” a USPS spokesperson said. “Additionally, we are not accepting transit mail from other countries sending their mail through U.S. Postal Service offices of exchange (International Service Centers) destined to China, Hong Kong and Macao.”For all mail coming into China, the China Post will contact the recipient via telephone and arrange for a non-face-to-face delivery method, which includes temporary storage at the postal outlet, availability for collection from the outlet, or delivery to a smart parcel locker.
