BEIJING, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Friday called on China and the United States to strengthen economic cooperation and avoid politicizing economic issues. Wang made the remarks while meeting with Wendell P. Weeks, chairman and chief executive officer of Corning Incorporated, a large manufacturer of specialty glass and ceramics.Wang welcomed Corning's continued investment expansion in China, saying the economies of China and the U.S. were interdependent and highly complementary. Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan (R) meets with Wendell P. MUSCAT, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin arrived here Saturday for an official goodwill visit intended to promote the development of relations between China and Oman.Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, delivered a written speech at the airport of the Omani capital.In the speech, Jia hailed the traditional friendship and fruitful cooperation between China and Oman, which was once connected by the "Silk Road", pledging to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries and the two peoples through his visit.Oman is the third leg of Jia's four-state visit. He has visited Syria and Poland and will visit Kazakhstan.

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao said here Tuesday that China will shoulder its responsibility and contribute more to the world.Wen made the remarks when meeting with several former foreign leaders here to attend the two-day 21st Century Forum.They are former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, former European Commission President Romano Prodi, former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, former Russian Prime Minister Evgeni Primakov, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.In the meantime, Wen appealed for understanding, support and help from the international community, noting China still faced tremendously complicated issues and challenges after realizing great achievements.He also said China will adhere to the policy of reform and opening up, cooperation of mutual benefit and peaceful development, which will not only be China's strategic choice, but also its promise to the world.He said mankind should be confident of their success in achieving balanced, harmonious and sustainable development.Citing the profound impact caused by the global financial crisis, Wen said it was crucial at this moment for people to work together in a better way when dealing with global issues.The former foreign leaders said the international community paid close attention to China's development and its role in the world.Solving global issues required more understanding and trust between countries, more efficient cooperation, and development of science and technology, they said.The former officials also voiced the international community's willingness to cement cooperation with China so as to achieve common development.The forum, featuring the theme "New Era, New Challenge, New Vision -- Building a Future For All," is hosted by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).Later Tuesday, CPPCC National Committee Vice Chairman Wang Gang also met with some delegates here attending the forum, including Antonio Marzano,the president of the International Association of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions.The forum will conclude on Wednesday.

  

KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.
