When guests check in to Magnolia Hotel in downtown Denver, they’re greeted by new safety measures and staff cleaning more often. From social distancing markers on the floor to hand sanitizer at the door ,this is the new norm for hotels operating during a pandemic. “It’s been very difficult in hospitality with COVID-19,” said Sarah Treadway, president and co-CEO of Stout Street Hospitality and Magnolia Hotels, a hospitality company with hotels across the country which had to lay off 95% of its employees during the COVID-19 crisis. “Many of our employees have worked for us for more than 30 years,” Treadway said. “So, it’s been devastating.” It’s devastating both emotionally and financially as coronavirus concerns have closed down thousands of hotels around the world. “A lot of people are feeling a lot of pain,” said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Rogers says about two thirds of all hotels have laid off at least half of their workers. He added that many hotels that closed due to COVID-19 might never reopen. “In fact, the experts say the industry will not fully recover until 2023,” Rogers said. To hopefully help expedite that timeline, industry leaders are now focusing on ne-w safety standards. Marriott International is rolling out a new Commitment to Clean Program which claims to go above and beyond normal protocols. In Las Vegas, a city with 150,000 hotel rooms, MGM Resorts has started working with medical experts to develop a plan that will allow them to safely welcome guests back. Back at Magnolia Hotels, their increase attention to details is paying off. “I’m very proud to say none of our staff members have come down with COVID-19 because of our cleanliness standards from the beginning,” Treadway said. This extra cleaning, however, comes at a cost. But it’s a price guests say is well worth it.“I think they’re even stepping beyond what the protocol would ask them to do right now,” one guest said. “I think they’re doing great.” 2024
A 4.9-magnitude earthquake was reported near Ridgecrest, California, on Friday morning -- one week after a 7.1-magnitude temblor struck Southern California, the US Geological Survey said. The region was originally hit on July 4 with a 6.4 earthquake, followed by a 7.1-magnitude quake the following day.The latest moderate earthquake briefly rattled CNN's Los Angeles bureau.Last week's major earthquake was centered 11 miles northeast of Ridgecrest, the USGS said. It unleashed 11 times the amount of energy of the previous day's quake, also centered near Ridgecrest, said CNN Meteorologist Brandon Miller.Though area residents are used to earthquakes, the tremor last Friday night swayed buildings and cracked streets and foundations, sending terrified locals into the streets. The shaking was felt as far away as Mexico and Las Vegas, according to the USGS.Ridgecrest, a desert town, is home to 28,000 people. The region at one point saw an average of one aftershock per minute since Friday's quake, according to the US Geological Survey website.More than 4,700 quakes have occurred since July 4, said USGS geophysicist John Bellini.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. A Phoenix couple is accused of forcing a day laborer at gunpoint to have sex with the female suspect, police say.Phoenix police on April 8 responded to a call from a man saying he was sexually assaulted by a couple at a home. According to court documents, Brenda Acuna Aguero, 39, picked up a day laborer and told the man her husband needed help moving some items at their home. When they arrived at her house, Aguero reportedly told the man that, "it was her fantasy to have sex with a laborer." The victim initially thought Aguero was teasing, but when he realized she wasn't, he told her he was not going to have sex with her. At that point, police say, the woman's husband, 45-year-old Jorge Francisco Valenzuela, came into the room with a rifle. Valenzuela allegedly placed the rifle on the victim's chest, and "told him he was going to have sex with his wife, or he would shoot him."The victim had sex with Aguero as Valenzuela filmed video and took pictures, and allegedly directed the victim to different sexual positions.Police say Valenzuela later stole the victim’s Mexican visa and driver's license, and forced the victim to call his wife so Valenzuela could get her phone number.Valenzuela allegedly told the victim to come back the next day to get his visa and license and have sex with Aguero. He then threatened to send the video to the victim's wife if he didn't comply, records show.Later the same day, Valenzuela allegedly demanded the victim returned to his home for another sexual encounter. When the victim arrived with a friend, Valenzuela sent the pictures to the victim’s wife. The victim contacted police, who arrested Valenzuela and Aguero at their home. They both allegedly admitted their actions, with Valenzuela saying they had done this before with about four other men. They are being held on a 0,000 bond for sexual assault. 1871
