VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — The man and woman accused of fatally stabbing a Carlsbad woman in March appeared at their preliminary hearing on Wednesday. Ian Bushee and Malissa James pleaded not guilty to all charges, including murder and burglary. On it, you can hear him trying to console the victim. "Ma'am, you're going to be okay. The paramedics are going to be here, any second, okay?" Officer Harvey said. With the only eyewitness now gone, investigators were back at square one. What they did know was that the victim's gold car was missing, so they worked to track that down. Hours later, surveillance video captured the victim's stolen car in San Marcos. The suspects were taped walking around near a masonry warehouse and at a 7-11 store. Investigators said the two later ditched the stolen car in San Marcos, and for some reason, rode a bus back into Carlsbad. The two were later arrested near the original crime scene. Police said it turns out Gawitt's home was not the first the pair had ransacked that day. "I looked up, and I said something is missing here," neighbor Patricia Gapik said. That same morning, Gapik noticed her sewing basket and her daughter's flute were gone. Random items were also scattered near her sliding glass door. "I then realized that someone was in my house," Gapik testified. "I was scared."Luckily, Gapik was asleep the entire time, and never confronted the burglars. But investigators later found that the two cases were connected. They found some of Gapik's belongings inside the car left in San Marcos. The suspects, Ian Bushee and Malissa James were the same. (KGTV) - Several schools in the Vista Unified School District are returning back to virtual learning for two weeks after positive COVID-19 cases were identified.The district reopened for in-person learning at normal capacity, also known as Vista Classic, on October 20th. According to the district’s website, 17 cases have been reported since October 20th.District Superintendent, Dr. Matt Doyle, said Vista Classic and Vista Virtual were designed to work together so that there is the flexibility to move back and forth.Mission Vista High School, Vista High School, Madison Middle School, Roosevelt Middle School, and Rancho Minerva Middle School are also back to Vista Virtual due to positive cases.A class of 28 students and one teacher at T.H.E. Learning Academy Elementary school is also under quarantine after one positive case was reported.Last week the school unanimously approved a plan that would close down some middle and high schools for two weeks when positive cases are reported.The closures would happen if one school has two or more positive cases at the whole time, the entire school would switch back to Vista Virtual for two weeks. If three secondary schools have one positive case each, all three will return to Vista Virtual for two weeks.“I think two is tough; that doesn’t give us a lot of confidence that it won’t close down again,” said Dolly Goulart, a parent of a Mission Vista High School student who has been back to virtual learning.“I do appreciate that they’re doing trying to get classic families back in. They gave families a choice over the summer.”Goulart said her son’s transition back to Vista Virtual went smoothly.“From my perspective, it seemed perfectly seamless. He did fine pivoting back,” said Goulart. “He’s about a week into his two-week virtual pivot.”“We meet regularly with representatives from the S.D. (KGTV) -- Authorities have identified a man and a woman found dead inside a Vista home Sunday afternoon.The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says Della Astorga, 69 and her husband Alfredo Astorga, 76, both died of gunshot wounds.The department has ruled the incident a murder-suicide.RELATED: Man, woman found dead inside Vista homeDeputies said a man called 911 from inside the home located on the 800 block of Warmlands Avenue around 1 p.m. Sunday.When deputies arrived, they found both Della and Alfredo dead inside the home.
