BRUSSELS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) --- The European Commission on Friday gave the green light to Microsoft's acquisition of voice and video communication provider Skype, thus removing the last hurdle in the process.According to a statement released by the Commission, "the deal would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (The EU plus Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) or any substantial part of it."The Commission explained that it found that in the area of consumer communications, the parties' activities overlap in video communications, where Microsoft is active through its Windows Live Messenger.However, the Commission considered that there were no competition concerns in this growing market where numerous other players, including Google, were present.Skype was bought by eBay in 2005 at the price of 4.1 billion U.S. dollars, and sold out at 2.75 billion U.S. dollars in 2009. HEFEI, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's leading private automaker, Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., is expected to export a record 170,000 units of vehicles in 2011, marking the highest annual export figure in the company's history, a company manager said Friday.Chery exported 135,556 units of vehicles in the first ten months of this year, up 77.3 percent from a year earlier. BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists in Canada have raised a prospect of reversing Alzheimer's disease by deep brain stimulation, according to media reports Monday.The technique here is known as deep brain stimulation -- applying electricity directly to regions of the brain. It has been used in tens of thousands of patients with Parkinson's as well as having an emerging role in Tourette's Syndrome and depression.The study at the University of Toronto took six patients with the condition. Deep brain stimulation was applied to the fornix -- a part of the brain which passes messages onto the hippocampus.Lead researcher Prof Andres Lozano said you would expect the hippocampus to shrink by five per cent on average in a year in patients with Alzheimer's.After 12 months of stimulation, he said one patient had a five per cent increase and another had an eight per cent increase.Prof Lozano told BBC: "This is the first time that brain stimulation in a human being has been shown to grow an area of your brain.""It was an amazing finding for us," he said.The findings were presented at the Society for Neuroscience conference in November but they have yet to be published in an academic journal.To test whether this is really working, rather than being a fluke result, the researchers are going to perform a larger trial.

ALMATY, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan's Center for Prevention and Control of AIDS said Friday that the country had 17,266 registered HIV carriers as of Oct. 1,compared with 15,908 as of Feb. 1, 2010.Of the HIV-positive people, 1,432 were diagnosed with AIDS while 1,110 people carrying the virus AIDS have died, the center said.Last year, it said, a total of 1,969 new HIV cases were reported in the country.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- About one in 10 mobile phone subscribers in the United States is now using an Apple iPhone, said a new survey released on Friday.Latest survey results from research firm comScore showed that for the three-month period ending in October, Apple remained the No. 4 handset maker in the U.S. with its share of mobile subscribers rising to 10.8 percent from 9.5 percent in the previous three months.Among the top five mobile phone brands in the U.S. market, Apple is the only one that saw its market share increase in the quarter, according to the survey.Samsung was still the top handset manufacturer with 25.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG and Motorola taking the second and third place with 20.6 percent and 13.6 percent of share respectively.Research in Motion (RIM), maker of Blackberry, ranked No. 5 with a share of 6.6 percent.Except Apple, market shares of the other four brands remained unchanged or dropped from the previous quarter.Apple's gain in the quarter might be driven by the introduction of new model iPhone 4S which went on sale on Oct. 14, and the addition of Sprint as a carrier in the U.S. market, some analysts said.The survey by comScore, which involved more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, found that 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices by the end of October.
