SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ballast Point has introduced its way of giving back to the San Diego community after 20 years in business.Ballast Point is releasing "Made in San Diego," a new beer which will benefit the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. The brewery will donate 50 cents for every case of the beer sold to the EDC Foundation Entrepreneurship Fund.Leaders from the city and Ballast Point officially tapped the beer at Wednesday's San Diego Padres game at Petco Park.RELATED: San Diego-based Ballast Point to become Disneyland's first on-site brewery"As a brewery that has called San Diego home for over two decades, we couldn’t be more excited about this announcement," Marty Birkel, president of Ballast Point Brewing Company, said. "This community has embraced us from a small home brew supply shop to a globally distributed brewery, and we want to honor our hometown supporters while empowering other local business owners to pursue their passion – just like Ballast Point did."The beer is expected to generate about ,000 a year for the EDC program for small businesses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dawn Hendon knows a thing or two when it comes to the big day for couples, she was a wedding planner then became an officiant over the past 10 years."It's a happy business, I like to be around people for joyous occasions and weddings are always a happy event so I thought this is a happy thing, and today we need all the joy we can find," Hendon said.Recently, she's added a backyard chapel at her San Marcos home to her list of services. "I even have shoes, accessories, floral head pieces, boutonnieres for guys and tuxedos for men."Love Wedding Chapel is what she calls it and she was able to pull it off thanks to help with a grant from the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce. At a time she said when people are supporting more black owned businesses amid the fight for racial injustice, "I’m glad people are looking to support black owned businesses. Sometimes we have a lot more challenges, our population isn’t so big in San Diego." And in the middle of a global pandemic, Hendon said, "I’ve lost family members with COVID this year and I thought finding our joy is important so it brings me joy, and I hope to bring joy to others."She said there was no better time than now to create the business of her dreams, "I thought if we could bring a little bit of that dream to them and bring them a nice environment then it’d make their day a little special."She received her Masters in Business Administration last year and said everything she's learned and accomplished has helped make this business happen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Black history in San Diego goes back hundreds of years, but a unique aspect specific to the area is a historic building that no longer stands. At the intersection of Market and 2nd in downtown, there is a small plaque on the ground. This marker is all that’s left of the historic Hotel Douglas, a place founded in the Roaring 20s that became an icon for the area.George Ramsey founded Hotel Douglas in 1924 as a place for the black community. During this time, segregation was prevalent, and many hotels were whites-only. Ramsey created the hotel as a way to give a space and economic boost to black people.“He had the idea of creating a black hotel. When I say black hotel I mean a hotel run by black people, owned by black people, employing black people, serving black people,” said David Miller, a history professor who also works with the San Diego History Center.Miller said the hotel became a famous spot because of the nightclub inside that drew in many famous black performers, including Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington, who would stop on their way to shows in neighboring major cities.“San Diego was a stopover point so the club in the hotel became a center for black performers and in fact became dubbed the Harlem of the west,” said Miller.The hotel no longer stands, but the plaque marks the history it represents. Miller said this history, similar to other major black history days like Juneteenth, is important to know and understand to grow as a society.“It’s a chance to truth tell and to learn about not necessarily a moment in history but a moment in history that illustrates the ongoing nature of making freedom and navigating what freedom means now as free people,” he said.The San Diego History Center will reopen to the public July 4, 2020 after closures due to coronavirus. There are also resources available online to learn more about local history. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County officials created a Dia de los Muertos altar to honor the lives of 891 San Diegans who died from the coronavirus, and put a face and heart into the fight.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez championed the altar as a way to send a message."We wanted to honor those families and honor those lives lived and acknowledge the tremendous impact it's had, but also pay particular tribute to the impact that covid has had on the Latino community," Fletcher said.Saying more than half of those who died in the county are Latinos. This is extremely disproportionate considering only 30% of the population is Hispanic, according to the 2019 Census."When we start looking at the actual human toll and our relatives who have moved on now as a result of this virus it becomes more real and reminds us why it's so important to stay so vigilant," Gonzalez said.Vigilance is what Treasure Felder said would have saved her mom Ronda."She was our angel on earth and is now our angel in heaven, that's how we like to refer to her," said Felder. Felder says her mom was a social worker with the county, caring for foster youth and a strong woman in her 60s."She was never really ill, in the hospital, or hurt. Even if she had a little pain she'd always push through. So to see her in a place where she could barely stand up and also having to be put in a chemically induced coma was something that none of us prepared for." she said.She said she walked into her mother's room on July 4th and found she couldn't stand and was breathing heavily. She called an ambulance, even though her mother didn't want to go to the hospital, and never saw her again.Felder said her mother always had her hand out to help others and is so incredibly proud of how her mother led her life. She hopes sharing her story of pain and emptiness, now that her mother is gone, will stir others to take steps like wearing a mask and social distancing to stop the spread of the coronavirus.The altar will stay up through Tuesday morning. 2048
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – California and two other Western states have issued travel advisories that include a 14-day quarantine for those visiting the states or returning home from outside travel.California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee put the advisories into action for their respective states on Friday. The announcement comes as travel is expected to ramp up for the holidays.The advisories urge “visitors entering their states or returning home from travel outside these states to self-quarantine to slow the spread of the virus. The travel advisories urge against non-essential out-of-state travel, ask people to self-quarantine for 14 days after arriving from another state or country and encourage residents to stay local.”CALIFORNIA TRAVEL ADVISORY ANNOUNCEMENTIn addition to the self-quarantine, the advisories recommend travelers “limit their interactions to their immediate household. The advisories define essential travel as travel for work and study, critical infrastructure support, economic services and supply chains, health, immediate medical care and safety and security.”Newsom said in a news release, “Travel increases the risk of spreading COVID-19, and we must all collectively increase our efforts at this time to keep the virus at bay and save lives.”Brown added, “COVID-19 does not stop at state lines. As hospitals across the West are stretched to capacity, we must take steps to ensure travelers are not bringing this disease home with them. If you do not need to travel, you shouldn’t. This will be hard, especially with Thanksgiving around the corner. But the best way to keep your family safe is to stay close to home.”“Limiting and reducing travel is one way to reduce the further spread of the disease. I am happy to partner with California and Oregon in this effort to help protect lives up and down the West Coast,” Inslee said.The governors did not say how long the advisories are expected to last. 1981
