Among the scenes at the metro stations were those of people shouting "Thank you China" and "Long Live Pakistan-China friendship".
Amazon’s more direct involvement in education with its own edtech products and services has a more spotty history, with the company earlier this year stating it would shutter its TenMarks business and end its TenMarks Math and Writing products after the 2018-19 school year. Amazon was also largely a no-show at the huge International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference in Chicago in June, after having had a large presence in previous years.

Amazon’s annual meeting last year became an opportunity for activism, both inside the Seattle theater where shareholders gathered, and on the street outside. Inside the meeting, a group of Amazon employees pressing the company to take bolder action on climate change wore white shirts and stood up in support of a shareholder resolution on the topic. It was one of 11 activist shareholder resolutions introduced in 2019, all of which were voted down.
Amazon’s employee base is up 13 percent over a year ago. That is a big drop in annual growth from the past few quarters when headcount grew by rates ranging from 51 to 77 percent. A big reason behind that was the absorption of Whole Foods Market and the 87,000 people who work there. With some more distance from the Whole Foods acquisition, employee growth numbers will slow from the big jumps in recent quarters but line up better with what’s actually happening at the company.

Google upped the ante last year when it opened a big new campus?for its cloud division right next door to Amazon’s Seattle HQ.
