SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As coronavirus cases increase across the country, there is a concern about staffing in hospitals across Southern California.Not only are hospitals dealing with patients they typically see during this time of year, COVID-19 patients are adding stress to thinning resources.“If these trends continue, we’re going to have to much more dramatic—arguably drastic—action,” said Governor Gavin Newsom during a news conference on Monday.Currently, 74 percent of ICU beds are occupied in Southern California. State health officials protect it to be at 107 percent capacity by December 24th.“I have a guarded concern about the direction that we’re moving in,” said nurse practitioner Samantha Gambles Farr of the rising cases.Gambles Farr said she is not only worried about staffing numbers, but also the physical and mental health of her colleagues. “The staffing issues have always been something that we've dealt with in the ICU because of the critical acuteness of our patients and the burnout of staff,” she said. ‘In these unprecedented times with COVID in the pandemic, what we're seeing is that nurses are picking up a lot more overtime and shifts.”Early in the pandemic, the state created the California Health Corps. It asked for those with health care experience to help during the COVID-19 outbreak. Thousands, including retired workers and nursing students, volunteered to help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers arrested a driver who knocked over a light pole on Interstate 5, causing it to fall into the path of oncoming traffic Friday night.It happened on the northbound lanes of I-5 just before the State Route 163 connector.The driver of a white Chevy Impala went off the road crashed into two light poles, knocking one of the light poles onto the right lane and into oncoming traffic.CHP says at least seven cars smashed into the downed light pole, damaging the vehicles. However, there were no injuries.The driver of the Impala told CHP he merely fell asleep behind the wheel, but after a sobriety test, he was arrested.“He was arrested for DUI,” said Steve Jio, with the CHP. “Possibly drugs, and we’re taking him to our station to be evaluated."Three lanes of I-5 were closed off for about an hour as crews removed the damaged vehicles and the downed light pole.Crews plan to replace the light pole Saturday morning. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least nine parked vehicles has their windows smashed with a bat in Oak Park early Monday morning. The vandalism happened on the 5600 block of Redwood Street around 1 a.m. Car windows along Redwood Street and Thorn Street were smashed. A witness told 10News he was returning home when he noticed shattered pieces of glass on the ground and spotted two suspects trying to get away in a white car with no license plates. The man says he followed the suspects down Thorn Street before they got away. Police are searching for the suspects and say nothing appears to have been stolen from the vehicles. 628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Convoy Street already seems like its own neighborhood to many, always bustling with locals at its numerous Asian restaurants and shops.Thursday, community business leaders continued their efforts to put Convoy Street firmly on San Diego's map with a live mural painting art show.The mural, created by local artist Espa?a Garcia Feucht, covers the side of Cross Street Chicken and Beer and was painted live in tandem with Taiko drummers playing and other artists showcasing their work outside the restaurant. "I truly believe that Convoy is big enough to have it's own neighborhood arch."The mural features a rooster holding a beer (a tip of the hat to the region's craft beer scene and the restaurant the mural sits on) with the phrase "made in San Diego" underneath. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border agents have seen a huge drop in traffic along the San Diego Sector ports of entry since the Trump Administration restricted all non-essential travel at the U.S.-Mexico border last Friday.In a conference call with reporters on Monday morning, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) revealed new details about its plan to handle the implications of the restrictions on the migrant population and the cross-border worker population. Recent tweets posted by CBP showed empty ports of entry. “We have seen about a 70% decrease on average at all our ports of entry,” said a CBP spokesperson during Monday’s conference call. That plunge in foot and vehicle traffic comes after the border restrictions took effect on Saturday.CBP said Monday that the restrictions don't apply to U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents or those traveling for medical, work or educational purposes.The agency reports that people’s work verification or documentation is currently on a sort of “honor system”. “At this point in time, we are not formally asking for verification or employment ID,” said a spokesperson on Monday.A spokesperson also reaffirmed that most apprehended migrants will be returned immediately, adding in part, “Individuals are no longer being held in detention areas.Quick interviews will be conducted in the field. Basic biographic scans run in the field as well. Then the individual will be [taken] back to the border and expelled to the country they came from.”There's now at least a 48-hour suspension on migrants crossing for court hearings, said a CBP spokesperson, who added that all new asylum seekers will be reviewed independently. “We're taking each case, case by case, depending on what the claim is, the nationality and the country from which they come from,” he added.“I'm particularly concerned about the asylum migrancy [population],” said Rafael Fernández de Castro, a U.S.-Mexico relations expert at UC San Diego. “In the shelters in Tijuana, sometimes there's 15, 20 [or even] 40 people sleeping in a room. That's basically a horrible story because that's a way to get a lot of migrants contaminated with coronavirus,” he added in his interview with 10News.
