As our country works to rebound, companies are managing the pressure of keeping workplaces safe.Employers are taking precautions ahead of Thanksgiving with concerns about the coronavirus spreading over the holiday.Companies are doing everything from issuing memos, reminding workers about the public health guidance on gatherings and travel, to asking workers to sign pledges they'll keep gatherings small.But there are limits to how much say your boss has on what you're doing outside of work.“They are allowed to inquire about what their travel plans might be, what their off-duty conduct might be and they can ask employees to disclose that information,” said Christine Lamb, an employment attorney with Fortis Law Partners.Lamb says many states prevent employers from discriminating against workers who are doing things outside of work that are lawful.But if you aren't following policies your work put in place for COVID-19, they can ask you to go through some type of coaching or counseling.Lamb advises companies against checking in on their workers on social media.“You might have an employee who is at a gathering of 50 people and they're not posting anything on social media. The employer might not know what's going on and another employee that posts a photograph of them with 10 people on social media, there's just a risk of that unequal application of the rules,” said Lamb.She says one thing employers should be thinking about now is what does next week look like for the company post-Thanksgiving. As millions of Americans are struggling to find work, some have stopped looking and decided to create an opportunity for themselves instead.Experts believe this is evident in the sudden spike of new business applications.For example, a few months ago, Leigh Altshuler in New York City lost her job and rather than search for a new one, she decided to invest her entire savings into a business around her passion for books.“I was caught definitely by surprise,” said Altshuler. “I felt so low when I lost my job and to be able to turn this into something that makes me feel so lucky and so fortunate, is already a huge success.”Altshuler’s bookstore, Sweet Pickle Books, is expected to open by the end of October.Nicolas Bryon took a similar path.“I was working at a local restaurant here in Tampa when the pandemic hit,” said Bryon. “I was a forced layoff."Bryon and his brother recently opened a meal kit business around the chef’s homemade pasta. Starting a business together was an idea they had kicked around for years, but never had the time to flesh it out. That is, until Bryon lost his job.“Definitely had the time to slow things down and plan things out,” added Bryon.The business has taken off, providing more than a good income for the siblings.“I feel free,” he explained. "I feel a lot freer than I did a few months ago. Doing what I love, like on my own time, creating my own dishes and being financially sustained. "We've always been flexible in our workplace, we've always allowed people to work from home if they want, and what we learned is that people do want a place that is their own that we can come into," said Reid Carr, CEO of the marketing agency Red Door Interactive. After years of leasing an office in downtown San Diego, the company wanted to create its own space, designed to foster collaboration and growth."We were excited when we found it, we had a vision for how this whole process was going to go down," said Carr. The company purchased nearly half an acre of property to create a campus-style workplace. But after the pandemic hit, they overhauled the design to ensure it was a space employees not only wanted to go to but could feel safe in.The new campus will incorporate touchless features throughout the buildings, like doors and water bottle filling stations. They're creating outdoor meeting spaces with heaters and shades so that they can be used year-round. And inside, they're investing in the best available HVAC systems for air filtration."I'm learning at all this stuff as we go, but we're looking at hospital grade stuff. The perspective we took is there's always going to be flus and colds, so why not do these things that will help keep people from spreading disease," said Carr. In addition to having their own socially distanced desks, employees will have designated areas separate from visitors, including the kitchen. One building will be the epicenter of conference rooms so they can be easily cleaned more frequently."Certain things never change. You want to feel like you belong to something, you want to connect with people," said Carr.
