SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) - Border officials highlighted their accomplishments Friday, saying the past year has hit some benchmarks."The past year has taken a tremendous toll on our agency, our agents and their families," Kathleen Scudder, Acting Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector said, referring to the thousands of migrants who traveled to the U.S.-Mexico Border in San Diego County. While a nearly 14-mile stretch of new bollard fencing was completed in August, from the beach to Otay Mountain, officials said their agents faced more attacks compared to the previous fiscal year."There were a total of 156 assaults on agents while performing their duties, agents endured 72 assaults the prior fiscal year," Scudder said. While arrests at the border have been down the last six months, drug smuggling has shifted to the water, Scudder said. Agents seized 3,273 pounds of marijuana, 1,284 pounds of cocaine, 3,918 pounds of methamphetamine, 288 pounds of heroin and 108 pounds of fentanyl "that could provide a fatal dose to 24 million people."Customs and Border Protection Agents shifted their role over the past year, providing much needed humanitarian aid for migrants from caravans. While agents faced national scrutiny for their treatment of migrants, Scudder described a show of kindness."Our agents persevered, often bringing items from their homes to care for small children and babies in their custody," she said. She described an act of heroism where an agent found two boys who were lost near Chula Vista. He found one of the boys unconscious, suffering from hypothermia. He wrapped the boy in his coat and hugged him, to provide body warmth until help arrived. The boy recovered and went home six weeks later.Scudder said she expects the downward trend in illegal border crossings to continue, thanks to the wall, agreements with agencies and Mexico, and Migrant Protection Protocol in place. Border officials said migrants in custody for more than 72 hours are often held past the mandated time due to medical or processing complications. 2067

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KGTV) - An animal rights group is suing an organization purporting to be an animal rescue for allegedly violating a new California law.ALDF claims that Bark Adoptions, registered to an address in Menifee, Calif. has been supplying dogs to pet stores in “an unlawful scheme to sell and launder puppy mill puppies .”They claim it violates AB 485, a California law that was enacted on January 1 of 2019, sometimes referred to as the “Puppy Mill Ban.”The law prohibits pet stores from selling animals from breeders, instead, only allowing stores to sell dogs from shelters or rescue groups. The law specifically states that a “rescue group” must have tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization by the IRS. Furthermore, it must be in a “cooperative agreement with at least one private or public shelter.”In February, 10News reported that Bark Adoptions had been supplying dogs to stores in San Diego County and Riverside County. Undercover video from the animal rights group, Companion Animal Protection Society, showed young, apparently purebred and designer puppies being sold for thousands of dollars.10News obtained interstate certificates of veterinary inspection that showed Bark Adoptions was getting the 8-10 week old puppies shipped from another purported rescue in Iowa, called Rescue Pets Iowa. The investigation by ALDF followed the same trail and alleged the defendants conveyed “those puppies to pet stores for profit.”“This is what we’re alleging in our lawsuit, that it amounts to nothing short of a puppy laundering operation that we’re gonna try to stop with a court order,” said Christopher Berry, a staff attorney with ALDF.10News reached out to Lara Abuzeid, an attorney for Bark Adoptions, but did not receive any comment on the lawsuit. 1788

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Emergency crews have recovered a body after an incident at a Scottsdale aquatic park.Crews were at Eldorado Aquatic Park near Hayden and McDowell road early Monday morning.Scottsdale police say around 12:30 a.m.; an officer was making rounds in the area when he heard what sounded like muffled calls for help.He worked to locate where the calls may be coming from and eventually found them to be coming from a pipe that helps support one of the water slides.Officers were communicating with the victim, said to be a transient, but lost communication with him around 2 a.m.Officials say the man reportedly went up over a tall fence surrounding the park and was up on the slide. He then somehow fell into the pipe structure, where he became trapped.Crews had to dismantle the slide in order to get the victim's body out.He has since been identified as 31-year-old Ryan Kelly. A medical examiner will determine Kelly's official cause of death. This story was originally published by Ashley Loose on KNXV in Phoenix. 1037

Sen. Chuck Schumer plans to propose legislation decriminalizing marijuana, Vice News reported Thursday."I'll be introducing legislation to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level from one end of the country to the other," the New York Democrat told Vice News. "The legislation is long overdue."Schumer, the Senate minority leader, told Vice that he had "seen too many people's lives ruined because they had small amounts of marijuana and served time in jail much too long."He added that it was "the right thing to do."According to Vice News, the legislation will be introduced in the next week, and it will include taking marijuana off the Drug Enforcement Administration's controlled substance list.Schumer also told Vice News the legislation will "maintain federal authority to regulate marijuana advertising in the same way it does alcohol and tobacco." 874
