SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year's Rose Parade will not happen due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but there will be a televised special, showcasing parade's from year's past, as well as special segments.One of those segments will feature a Rancho Bernardo 2-year-old who is being honored for her organ donation. A year and a half ago, Leia Parker lost her life after a swimming accident, and with help from the company Lifesharing, Leia's parents had her organs donated to families in need."As a grieving parent, you just want to find meaning, and I believe everything happens for a reason," says mother Tihani. I am extremely proud that my daughter has changed the lives of five people, and she has given a second chance and new hope to others."Tihani was hopeful her daughter would one day grow up to be a strong independent women. And that is why she named her Leia, after the Star War character Princess Leia."Princess Leia was my favorite Star Wars character, and she was one of my bigger role models. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Police Department has identified the officer involved in an East Village shooting over the weekend as Andres Ruiz. The department says Ruiz is assigned to the Canine Unit and has been with the department for more than 11 years. The incident started just before 10 p.m. on May 23 at an apartment complex on Park Boulevard and Market Street. Police were called to the complex following reports of a woman trowing objects from a window. When they arrived, officers found broken glass and furniture on the sidewalk below the unit. RELATED: Woman hurt in officer-involved shooting in East VillageAuthorities say the woman refused to listen and brandished a knife, continuing to throw objects from the window and refusing to come out of the building, prompting police to force their way into the building. After the woman locked herself into the bathroom, police used verbal direction, chemical agents, and a police canine in an effort to take the woman into custody. When officers made their way into the bathroom, the department says the woman grabbed and punched the canine and threatened officers with the knife. “One officer fearing that he was going to be struck or stabbed with a knife, fired at least one round striking the female,” said Capt. Rich Freedman of the San Diego Police Department.The woman was treated and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No officers were injured, but some people were hit by objects that were thrown out of the window. The suspect has only been identified as a 26-year-old San Diego resident. 1593

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department says it has resumed conducting pre-pandemic evictions but continues to make that decision on a case-by-case basis.The department said in a statement that it served 12 evictions in July."The priority of enforcement focused on vacant locations or locations with reports of criminal activity. When possible, deputies conducted pre-eviction interviews and offered community resources to those who may need them at the pre-eviction interview and on the day of the lockout," SDSO's statement read.Of the 12 evictions last month, one was at a commercial property and 11 were at residential properties.Of the 11 properties, six were occupied and five were abandoned, SDSO said. In four of the six properties, deputies said criminal activities had taken place at the residences.At the fifth location, deputies say they found an elderly woman who was suffering from mental illness with health concerns and living with no heat or water. She was taken to a hospital.SDSO said the court order for the sixth location was about to expire so it had to be served.Last month, San Diego City Council leaders voted to extend a rent payback period on renters who have lost income due to COVID-19 until December 30. Renters are also required to follow the rules in leases, but landlords cannot evict a tenant for nonpayment due to COVID-19. 1380

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego will begin its first over water testing of lighting on the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, as the Port continues efforts to install lighting across a portion of the bridge.The testing will start on Sunday, Nov. 8, and continue to Saturday, Nov. 14, from 6:15 p.m. to midnight.The testing will include 170 computer-programmed LED lights and controllers temporarily installed on three of the bridge's tallest columns near the center of the structure. Each night, a live technical test will be conducted in different colors, combinations, sequencing, and arrangements."This bridge lighting test provides San Diego a unique opportunity to see what’s possible and how the infusion of technology and art can make people feel connected to, and inspired by, our beautiful waterfront," said Commissioner Marshall Merrifield, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of every person in the San Diego region, and after years of dedicated time to the project, bring forward a viable, beautiful addition to the nighttime skyline."The testing will see periods of darkness as other aspects are being tested, so the lighting won't be constant illuminated.The upcoming testing is the second test of the project. The first took place in April 2019, when lighting was tested on two columns over land on the San Diego side of the bridge.Following the over water testing, the Port will reach out to community members for input about the lighting and design. 1530

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s five branches will be shut down “in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.”The decision to close the branches was made under guidance of public health officials. The closure order is effective July 6.Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said, “Our downtown branch will remain open July 1 and 2, but starting Monday, we will close our public-facing counters as a precautionary measure, based on social distancing recommendations from local officials.”The four other branches -- Kearny Mesa, San Marcos, Chula Vista, and Santee -- have been closed to the public since March and will remain closed.The downtown branch on 1600 Pacific Highway had just reopened on June 15, with modifications in place, after being closed in March.Customers can still complete business via the SDTTC.com website or without even visiting the office at all.
