A night of excess at a Pittsburgh apartment ended with three people dead, four people hospitalized and a police department warning how quickly drugs can kill.Authorities responded to a report of an unconscious man in an apartment complex elevator around 2 a.m. Sunday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Pittsburgh Director of Public Safety Wendell Hissrich said.Shortly later, paramedics responded to another man a few blocks away, outside, who was "somewhat conscious" and had symptoms similar to those of the first man. AKRON, Ohio — More than 200 Ellet High School students received their diplomas Friday night at Akron Civic Theatre in Ohio. Among them was an 87-year-old man getting an honorary diploma, 70 years after he left school for the military.Floyd Edward Hoskins, known to friends and family members as Ed, left Ellet High School in 1949 at age 17 to join the military.“Three years, three months, 19 days,” Hoskins said of his total time in the Army. During that time, he said, he was supposed to serve in Korea but was sent to Alaska for two years instead.When he came home, Hoskins said he initially had trouble finding a job but eventually landed one at Goodyear Tire and Rubber, where he worked for “44 years, four months, three weeks and one day.”Hoskins moved to Hawaii two years ago to live with one of his sons and his daughter-in-law. His daughter-in-law, Cynthia Allen Hoskins, began doing some research into veterans’ benefits.“We are retired military, my husband and I,” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “And we were doing some research as far as our kids and their benefits in order to continue their college education.”She ran across information about the benefits the State of Ohio provides to veterans, where she learned her father-in-law might be eligible to receive his high school diploma. She inquired with his former school and found out he was eligible.“His reaction was kind of, ‘Ah, I don’t know if I really want to do this. It’s just a piece of paper,’ ” Cynthia Allen Hoskins said. “But after we explained to him, ‘Dad, you know, you really pushed education on us, we push it onto the grandkids. An 8-year-old boy in Kentucky donated 165 toys to the Ludlow Police Department’s annual holiday toy drive, making sure local children in need wake up Christmas morning to presents under their trees.“I’m happy,” third-grader Braxton Gillespie, who solicited donations by posting copies of a hand-drawn flyer across town, said Friday night. “I just get to help people that don’t have stuff.”The department’s toy drive tends to run down to the wire, Chief Scott Smith said Friday night. Officers spend the early winter reaching out to local schools and identifying around 30 families that need extra help to fill out their Christmas lists, but there are always late entries. “Every year, a couple days before (Christmas), we always get some surprise families added to the list, and we always scramble,” Smith said. “Generally, the officers pay for gifts out of their pockets, so you get one guy going to buy three or four basketballs.
