The concerns of COVID-19 are on the minds of many Americans.In the Latino community, the concern is heightened. Latinos are three times more likely to get the virus, according to a Johns Hopkins study. Latino voters recently named the novel coronavirus as a top concern during a Pew Research study.A California doctor has taken a proactive approach to help his community in the state’s Central Valley stop the spread of the disease and help prevent the economic distress the virus can bring.California’s Central Valley, also known as the “Bread Basket of America,” is where most of the food in the United States comes from. It is here where thousands of Latinos work under extreme conditions like triple degree heat, poor air quality, and long hours to put food on your table. The California Department of Public Health shows that nearly half of the deaths in the Central Valley area from the Latino community. They also account for more than 60 percent of the cases.“If there is no one to pick in the fields, if there is not one to pack the meat, which feeds a majority of the country, then the whole country would definitely feel it,” said Dr. Juan Bautista, the medical director at Bautista Medical Center.Dr. Bautista is part of the 60 percent of Latinos that got the virus. Although being relatively healthy, his underlying asthma condition made fighting the virus tough. He was hospitalized for six days.Dr. Bautista says Latinos are high-risk because of the prevalence of diabetes and asthma in the community.“Diabetes places a major factor, not just in your immune system, but also your response to the medications we give with COVID,” he explained.Medications like Dexamethasone can cause patients’ blood sugar to rise. For a diabetic patient, this medication can have bad side effects or even be taken off the table as a form of treatment due to the risks.Reina Gonzalez spent an entire month over the summer on a ventilator. She is a breast cancer survivor, and now, a survivor of this deadly virus. On Tuesday, she was celebrating her granddaughter’s first birth. Months after her initial diagnosis and release from the hospital, she is still unable to work due to her physical condition.“When I start moving or walking or any minimum exercise, my pulse races up a lot and my heart,” described Gonzalez.She feels fortunate to be able to apply for workers' compensation to help pay for her medical bills, but most of Dr. Bautista’s patients aren’t as fortunate.Dr. Bautista says the average cost of a test in the Central Valley is between 0 to 0. In an effort to increase testing, Dr. Bautista is now offering free, rapid testing at his practice. He and his staff are available every weekday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., an optimal time for working families. The testing is free and turns out results in 30 minutes or less.Fast test results are critical in this underserved community. It slows down the spread of the disease because people are not returning to work as they wait for test results.“They are not willing to miss work,” said Dr. Bautista, regarding the financial need of his patients.During this time, Dr. Bautista says he has learned medicine isn’t the only thing he needs in order to help his patients. He now finds himself educating them on social services available to them.During the rapids test sessions, programs offering financial aid to those who test positive are offered. The next issue to tackle when it comes to the impact of the virus is the long-term health complications many are left with.“We are starting to learn now that this, although it may have a low death rate the disability it brings, is definitely significant,” he said.With a high survival rate, many will need long-term care, leaving a community that has been disproportionately attacked by this virus with possibly decades of chronic health care issues. 3866

The classified ads website Backpage.com has been seized by federal law enforcement agencies, according to a banner that popped up on the site Friday.The banner says, "backpage.com and affiliated websites have been seized as part of an enforcement action" by the FBI, US Postal Inspection Service and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division.Lawmakers on Capitol Hill and advocacy groups have long called for an investigation into Backpage.com for allegedly facilitating prostitution and sex trafficking.A spokesperson for the Justice Department confirmed to CNN that the website has been seized and that additional information would be made available Friday evening. However, a judge decided that the federal case should remain sealed on Friday night. No other additional information was provided.A two-year Senate investigation into online sex trafficking found that found that Backpage.com knowingly aided criminal sex trafficking of women and young girls, simply scrubbing terms from ads such as "Lolita," "teenage," "rape," "amber alert," and publishing them on its site. After the investigation was published in January 2017, Backpage.com shut down its adult ads section.The company has been targeted with several lawsuits over the years, but has been largely protected by Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, a legal protection that gives a broad layer of immunity to online companies from being held liable for user-generated content. Companies are supposed to act in good faith to protect users, but critics argue the law can be used as a shield. The law, however, does not, protect sites from federal liability against criminal law, like child-pornography laws.Last month, however, the Senate approved bipartisan legislation called the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act. The federal government has placed thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children in the homes of sponsors, but last year it couldn't account for nearly 1,500 of them.Steven Wagner, a top official with the Department of Health and Human Services, disclosed the number to a Senate subcommittee last month while discussing the state of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) that oversees the care of unaccompanied immigrant children.Wagner is the acting assistant secretary for the Administration for Children and Families, which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. The Food and Drug Administration approved on Wednesday a treatment for the Ebola virus. This is the first FDA-approved treatment for Zaire ebolavirus infection in adults and kids.Zaire ebolavirus is one of four Ebola virus species that can cause potentially deadly infections. It is transmitted through direct contact with blood, tissue or body fluids of an infected person or wild animal.The treatment, Inmazeb, is a mixture of three monoclonal antibodies and was created by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. The three antibodies work together to bind to the glycoprotein on the surface of the Ebola virus and block it from entry into the body’s cells.Inmazeb was tested in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during an Ebola virus outbreak in 2018-2019 through a partnership between the local government and the National Institutes of Health.A vaccine for Ebola virus was approved by the FDA in December 2019.Regeneron is also the company behind an experimental antibody cocktail that was given to President Donald Trump following his diagnosis of COVID-19, and which he said “cured” him. Trump was also prescribed the antiviral drug remdesivir and the steroid dexamethasone at the time.Regeneron’s COVID-19 treatment is a mix of two powerful antibodies that are believed to boost the immune response to the coronavirus. The girlfriend of the man killed Thursday after a shooting in a Nashville mall was taken into custody on gun charges. According to an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, Alexandria Lavender was arrested on two counts of theft of property, ,000 or less, and unlawful gun possession for having two stolen guns with her. The shooting happened just before 2:30 p.m. local time Thursday inside a hallway near an Auntie Anne's pretzel shop, just across from an Old Navy store. Police said two men – identified as Justin Golson and Demarco Churchwell – got into an argument that led to gunfire.Churchwell was taken to Skyline Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died. Golson was arrested and charged with criminal homicide. According to police documents, Churchwell’s girlfriend – Alexandria Lavender – was with him as he was being extracted from the mall. A witness said she had a gun in her purse, which police said could be seen in plain view from the top of the bag. Authorities said she did not have a valid handgun permit. The guns were checked by police records and were found to be reported stolen out of Dickson and Davidson counties.   1238
