SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The family of 19-year-old Dylan Hernandez, the San Diego State University (SDSU) freshman who died after falling off a bunk bed last November, say they are concerned about the investigation conducted by Campus Police and the University. The family believes the University Police Department is not pursuing certain angles, including a possible cover-up.Last November, Dylan Hernandez died after attending a Phi Gamma Delta fraternity party. In police reports obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune, the freshman made it back to his dorm room around midnight. On the morning of Nov. 7, 2019, he fell off the top bunk bed and hit his head. An autopsy concluded that Hernandez had fractured his skull, suffering from a brain bleed that ultimately led to his accidental death. Reports also state that his blood-alcohol level was about 0.23, nearly three times the legal limit. "The Hernandez family is concerned because witnesses they provided to SDSU and UPD still have not been questioned," George Kindley, Hernandez family lawyer, said. The same University Police reports state that UPD never interviewed anybody from the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. They also never sought out search warrants for Snapchat videos or phone records, despite knowing that some fraternity brothers instructed others to delete possibly incriminating videos and messages. According to the report, one of those messages read, "Remember, silence is golden."This was a shocking revelation to the family. Details of the incomplete report, released late last year, was not meant to be shared with the public as it compromises our ongoing investigation and can hinder witnesses from sharing information. "The Hernandez family also told 10News they are questioning the SDSU's bunk bed safety enforcement. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of Poway Friday honored the memory of Lori Lynn Gilbert-Kaye, who was killed last April in a shooting at a local synagogue, by renaming a street after her.Many gathered Friday for the unveiling of Lori Lynn Lane (formerly Eva Drive). It's located in the Green Valley Neighborhood, off Stone Canyon Drive. Lori Kaye lived at that intersection. “To be able to dedicate this street to her memory means a lot to us in Poway,” says Poway Mayor Steve Vaus.RELATED: Family discovers synagogue shooting victim's random act of kindnessNeighbors and friends came together and petitioned for the change. Vaus says it's rare for the city to rename a street after someone. The last one dates back to the 1980s. But Vaus says the city had no hesitation with this renaming. The Poway City Council unanimously approved the honor in November. Gilbert-Kaye lost her life in that tragic synagogue shooting back in April. Many say she was a light in this community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Federation of Teachers (CFT) is urging school districts across the state to roll back in-person classes and return to distance learning.CFT President Jeff Freitas said with most of the state back in the purple tier of restrictions, it only makes sense to go back to virtual learning until there is a slow in the spread of COVID-19.“We need to get these numbers down," said Freitas. “We think the best thing right now is for schools to stop their plans of reopening and, or if they are reopened, to close their schools and go back to remote.”Three Vista Unified School District schools -- Rancho Buena Vista High, Vista Magnet Middle, and Madison Middle -- returned to virtual learning Tuesday after positive COVID-19 cases were reported. It’s a back-and-forth the district has been dealing with since reopening for in-person instruction last month.“There should be more of a statewide approach and definitely a national approach,” said Freitas. “We have been asking that they take the lead on this.”San Diego Unified School District thinks it has come up with an answer. During its State of the District address Tuesday evening, Superintendent Cindy Marten said the district created a federal relief plan to get all schools nationwide back on track for the next two years.The plan asks for federal investment in education that would be centered around equity and undoing learning loss.“What would the San Diego strategy look like at the national level? We have outlined that plan, shared it with the Biden administration,” said Marten.The plan includes a COVID-19 testing, tracking, and tracing strategy for students and staff, and 0 billion in direct relief to schools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The gloves are coming off in the race for San Diego County District Attorney, with a unlikely person taking shots at Genevieve Jones-Wright Friday.Rebecca Harrison, who said she’s the victim of a Balboa Park rapist, backed candidate Summer Stephan.At a news conference in front of the courthouse, Harrison said Jones-Wright, who was the public defender in the case, treated Harrison as if she was the one on trial.“Several weeks ago I found out that Genevieve was running for D.A. and it literally made me sick to my stomach. It felt like someone had kicked me because she was professing that she gives dignity and a voice to victims when that is not what I experienced whatsover,” Harrison said.Jones-Wright told Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin she gave Harrison an extreme level of compassion and that the press conference was all political posturing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The message from nurses and caregivers Tuesday morning was clear, "it's a question of priorities for entire healthcare system." Frustration and anger built after a 27-month contract renewal was signed by Palomar Health's CEO, Diane Hansen. The contract details a base salary close to million, with potential of earning bonuses, increasing that amount. Frontline workers argue that because COVID-19 led to an increase of patients, and layoffs of caregivers and nurses, "the board should have invested in resources and more protective equipment. Some of the PPE is not even medical grade, and everyone who's been laid off should be brought back," said representative for California's nurses association, Sarah Gurling. Gurling joined other reps and nurses in a protest at Palomar Medical Center, arguing funds should have been allocated towards other resources within their facilities."Caregivers and nurses are the heart of the hospital. We know what's best for patients and each other. The hospital executives and the Palomar board has lost sight of that." Meahwhile, Palomar's health board chair, Richard Engel, stands behind his decision. He said Hansen has done a tremendous job and credits much of the hospital's success through her work.
